INSPECTING THE FURNACE How To Inspect: All furnaces should be professionally inspected at least once every two years, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help extend the life of your unit in between professional inspections.

▪ Make Sure the Furnace Filter Fits into a Covered Slot • Furnace filters are designed to remove dust and
debris from the air. However, filter openings that aren’t covered allow air to infiltrate the system and defeat its closed trunk-line operation.
▪When installing a fresh filter, make certain it is installed with the air-direction indicator pointing in the proper direction – with the arrow pointing towards the furnace.

CLEANING DUCTWORK FOR HVAC SYSTEMS Just like your HVAC system itself, your home’s ductwork should be properly maintained as well. Duct cleaning, whether professionally or on your own, requires very little work and can potentially improve energy efficiency. Inspect your ductwork and make sure all joints are sealed tightly with high-quality foil-faced tape.

DIY HVAC AUDIT How To: Make a list of all the areas in your home that have a potential for drafts. Close off the areas by shutting any doors or windows, as well as all combustion appliances. Next, light some incense sticks and turn on either your home’s exhaust fans or use a large window fan to circulate air throughout the home.

Why: The airflow will help you detect any leaks or cracks in your home’s foundation, and the plume of smoke will flow in the direction of any leakage.
