Welcome to our 2020 Open House and Limited Auction. Every year in the cattle business is a challenge, but this year we have seen our fair share. After the tough winter that most reading this experienced rightalong with us, Mother Nature wasn’t through with us when it came grass time. Wind storms, floods, andwildfires left all of us involved in this sale scrambling to replace fences among other things and forcedus to do a few things differently this year. In spite of all of that, we have managed to pull together as gooda set of bulls as we have had in a while.

In our home herd, we continue to focus our efforts on identifying and multiplying superior adaptablematernal Simmental genetics that can be successful in low to medium input herds. In our view, thatmeans moderate mature size, moderate milk, exceptional udder structure, good disposition, sound feetand legs. We expect good fleshing ability and fertility on low to medium inputs. By stacking generationsof tough range tested cows, we have built a core of deep DX pedigrees that are doing the things that weask of them. We do continue to invest in genetics from outside sources as well. After a lot of years of usingonly herdbulls that were raised in our program, we went out in search of a couple of junior herdsires lastyear that we are really excited about. Pictured below are Future and Firebird. Look for their data at theend of the catalog and for them to be on display on sale day.

The second area where we choose to focus is for those who want top end growth and carcass traitblack SimAngus bulls. This is where our cooperators come in. Mike and Sohn Domsch and Tim Rippe have brought us an outstanding set of high growth bulls again this year. These are all homozygous polledand most are homozygous black. They are bred to add pounds to any calf crop.

We look forward to sharing this bull offering with you on Feb. 15th. If you can’t be with us that day, give us a call and come and take a look. As always, we offer free board until April 1st and fully guaranteethe bulls. If you have any questions, give us a call for more information on these bulls or our program andwe hope to see you on or before the 15th.

Homozygous Black Homozygous Polled. Here is a direct son of 600U and from our top Y107 cowwhose nursing ratio is 112 on 6 calves. We retained him as a spare last year but didn’t need to usehim. He has grown into a big powerful growth bull.

Will They Grow and Grade?A couple of years ago, Braxton was involved in the Steer Profitability Competition through theJunior Simmental Association. It is a great program where he learned a lot about the way thatthe feedlot and packing industry works and a rare opportunity to get individual feed efficiencyand carcass data.

He sent 3 random steers from the group that weren’t growthy enough to make our bull pen.The results from these steers were striking. For the entire feeding period, these steers gained4.5 lbs/day and did it with an astonishing 4.64 feed to gain ratio which was almost a fullpound better than the pen average. At harvest there were 2 steers that graded choice YG 2and the 3rd (a Simford) went CAB. These 3 steers beat the pen average for profitability by$92/head. Not bad for some below average growth steers from an operation whose emphasisis on maternal traits.

The dams of these steers averaged a little over 1200 lbs. If we can get this kind of perform-ance from these moderate sized cows, we believe that we are on the right track. The averageyearling weight EPD of these steers was 79 and the average marbling EPD was 0.1. Com-pare those numbers to this year’s sale offering and you will see why we are confident that ourmaternally focused cattle will still grow and grade.

Our Low Input 2 Year Old Program To those of you who are new to our program, some of these 2 year olds may require anexplanation. The May and June born bulls were born at that time by design. We handlethis set of cows completely separate from the early spring calving cows as a true low inputherd. After years of selection pressure on strictly winter grass, we have found the type andbloodlines that work in this program and have now moved to a winter stalk program freeingup more summer grass. Rather than push these bulls to maximize growth, we grow themslow and kick them out on grass all summer. We didn’t pull them into the lot until the endof November. All bulls are virgin unless otherwise noted.

Some of these oldergenetics don’t look as good if you just compare the numbers but if you want an ideal cross to put onAngus cows to make some baldy heifers, you just can’t go wrong here.

Hetero Black Homozygous Polled. We selected Future from the Bridle Bit sale last spring. He has thecombination of CE, maternal traits and marbling that we look for in a heifer bull. We are really excitedto see calves this spring and especially red calves from his deep black pedigree. Pictured inside thefront cover, for reference only.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs representsthe unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unitdifference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to+10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units theyare expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to wean-ing weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds moreweaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would beexpected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calfheifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-rankingchart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him rel-ative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or moredetailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmen-tal.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:

All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under anall-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.

Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used onheifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births infirst-calving daughters.

Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weightdue to milk and growth.

Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.

Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.

Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in thecowherd at 6 years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a termi-nal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic lev-els for many economically important traits, they only provide apiece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in.Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overallimpact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to thedramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over thelast several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entirecow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows)with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd sizeretained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and soldgrade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Anguscows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’rekeeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs,zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can beused to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another.Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull comparedto another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, youcan quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra$6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart isrequired to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relativeto other bulls in the breed.
