A. Presidential Event — A. Presidential Event — Challenges for the Hydrogen Economy

The 5-day long Presidential Event was held at the 2006 Fall National Meeting co-sponsored by PRES, IEC, INORG, PHYS, PETR, PMSE, and POLY with additional funding from US DOE, 3M, and ACS PRF with an inaugural poster session for graduate students and postdocs combining the disciplines of hydrogen storage, hydrogen production and hydrogen utilization (fuel cells). The event brought together a diverse group of scientists to entice discussions among the members of three different research communities.

The Plenary Presidential Event featured prominent scientists, including invited speakers from U.K., Japan, Denmark, and Iceland. Papers for all the presentations were published in the Fuel Chemistry Division Preprints, Prepr. Pap.-Am. Chem. Soc., Div. Fuel Chem. 2006, Vol 51. Approximately 20 papers from the Fuel Cell Symposium will appear in a special issue of J. Power Sources to be published in 2007.

The ACS Division of Fuel Chemistry Preprints is an important publication that has been widely quoted in the literature and subscribed to by both individuals and institutions (libraries). Searchable electronic archives became available in 2006 to enable search and access to all the preprints of symposium papers published by the Division of Fuel Chemistry since 1957.The Preprints have been published as documents of the material presented at each of the ACS meetings in the period 1957-2005. Each subject is referenced extensively. ACS members have access to all the preprints including those published after 2000.

C. Publication Education and Outreach for Basic Literacy on Energy and Fuel Issues C. Publication Education and Outreach for Basic Literacy on Energy and Fuel Issues

Conceptionalized in 2006, the goal of this project is to initiate a web portal for public education and outreach to introduce basic concepts and applications of science in the field of energy and fuels. Effective use of multimedia resources and presentations will make the science content easily accessible to non-technical audience, but still interesting and informative to scientists and engineers. This effort will be carried out in collaboration with PETR division. Environmental Chemistry and Geochemistry divisions will be invited to join this effort in the future. This project would also increase the visibility of ACS divisions that participate in this effort.
