First Reading: Wisdom 6:12-16
Wisdom will come to those who seek it.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 63:2,3-4,5-6,7-8
Our souls are thirsting for God.
Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
(shorter form: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)
God will raise all those who have died.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 25:1-13
Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, teaching his disciples
the importance of being prepared to receive the Kingdom of Heaven.
Background on the Gospel Reading: In this week’s Gospel, Jesus talks
about what it means to be prepared to receive the Kingdom of Heaven.
This week’s reading follows a series of warnings and predictions by Jesus
about the coming of the Son of Man. Jesus wants his disciples to under-
stand that the exact day and time cannot be predicted. He teaches the
disciples that they must remain vigilant so that they will not be caught un-
prepared.
When thinking about the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, it is im-
portant to consider the first-century wedding traditions of Palestine. Schol-
ars tell us that it was the custom of the day for young maidens—friends
and family members of the bride—to meet the bridegroom when he came
to bring his bride to her new home.
As with many of Jesus’ parables, several levels of interpretation are possi-
ble. In last week’s Gospel, we heard Jesus warn against following the ex-
ample of the Pharisees and scribes. If read in the context of early Christi-
anity’s struggle to define itself against Pharisaic Judaism, this parable is a
continuing critique of Judaism. It suggests that the Jewish leaders were like
the foolish virgins, unprepared to meet Jesus, the bridegroom of Israel.
In the chapter preceding this parable, however, Jesus warns about the
destruction of Jerusalem, the tribulation of the end times, and the coming
of the Son of Man. When read in this context, today’s parable is a warning
to the Christian community to remain vigilant and prepared to receive Je-
sus, the Son of Man who will return at the end of time. This interpretation is
supported by the reference to the delay of the bridegroom. The Christian
community for whom Matthew wrote this Gospel was coming to terms with
the realization that the promise of Jesus’ return would not be fulfilled within
their lifetimes. The question remains for us to ask ourselves, Are we ready
to receive Jesus? Will we be prepared to receive him? +

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
The rite begins with the Lord's Prayer. Jesus taught this prayer to his disci-ples when they asked how to pray (cf. Mt 6:9-13, Lk 11:2-4). In this prayer, the people join their voices to pray for the coming of God's kingdom and to ask God to provide for our needs, forgive our sins, and bring us to the joy of heaven. The Rite of Peace follows. The celebrant prays that the peace of Christ will fill our hearts, our families, our Church, our communities, and our world. As a sign of hope, the people extend to those around them a sign of peace. In the Fraction Rite, the celebrant breaks the consecrated bread as the people sing the Agnus Dei or "Lamb of God." John the Baptist proclaimed Jesus as "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (Jn 1:29). The action of breaking the bread recalls the actions of Jesus at the Last Supper, when he broke the bread before giving it to his disciples. One of the earliest names for the Eucharistic celebration is the breaking of the bread (Lk 24:35; Acts 2:42, 46). Before receiving Holy Communion, the celebrant and assembly acknowledge their unworthiness to receive so great a gift. The celebrant receives Holy Communion first and then the people come forward. Those who receive Holy Communion should be prepared to receive so great a gift. They should fast (except for medicines) for at least one hour before receiving the Eucharist and should not be conscious of having com-mitted serious sin. Because sharing at the Eucharistic Table is a sign of unity in the Body of Christ, only those in communion with the Catholic Church may receive Holy Communion. To invite others present to receive Holy Communion implies a unity which does not exist. Those who do not receive Holy Communion still participate in this rite by praying for unity with Christ and with each other. The people approach the altar and, bowing with reverence, receive Holy Communion. People may receive the Body of Christ either on the tongue or in the hand. The priest or other minister offers the Eucharist to each person saying, "The Body of Christ." The person receiving responds by saying, "Amen," a Hebrew word meaning, "So be it" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2856). As the people receive Holy Communion, the communion chant/song is sung. The unity of voices echoes the unity the Eucharist brings. All may spend some time in silent prayer of thanksgiving as well. The Communion Rite ends with the Prayer after Communion which asks that the benefits of the Eucharist will remain active in our daily lives.

Prayers of the Faithful
Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
We offer these prayers from deep within our hearts, asking God to be
present to all those in need.
That the Church will continue to call all people to holiness.
That the oil in the lamps of the priests serving in the Diocese of Sac-
ramento will never run dry.
That Jesus who is wisdom incarnate, will guide all those called to the
priesthood and consecrated life in the Diocese of Sacramento to their
proper vocation.
That God's people, who proclaim that death has been conquered in
Christ, may be active in defending His gift of life.
That the victims and families of the shooting at the First Baptist
Church in Texas will experience the love and presence of Christ as
authorities work to restore peace and justice in Sutherland Springs.
That the sick may be comforted and healed.
For our beloved dead, especially our family and friends, that they rise
with Christ to new life.
Each Sunday, a family, couple, or individual is called
forward at Mass to receive the vocation cross and a
special prayer written to accompany it. In taking the
cross, they commit themselves to pray during the
week for an increase in holy vocations, and the gift of
our priests, sisters, brothers, and deacons. All are
invited to participate.
Please pray for all the Sacramento Diocese Priests.
To see who has signed up and to those who have not signed up yet;
please stop by and check out our SIGN - UP CORNER at the Narthex

Prayer is about putting all else aside, even for
a minute, and turning the spotlight away from
ourselves and onto God. It’s harder than it
sounds. Jesus wanted his disciples to practice
this kind of prayer. The Our Father is Jesus’
response to his disciples’ request to teach
them how to pray. Prayer begins by acknowledging the presence of God.
All else flows from that. When we are aware of God’s presence in the
daily moments of life, our life is in balance.

Discover Your Inheritance
Discover what it means to be not just a son
or daughter of God, but an heir to all he
has to give.
Learn about the great mystery of how we
can love one another as Christ loves the
Church.
Find out that you have a place in God’s
“plan of sheer goodness".
Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reveals many remarkable gifts that we as Chris-
tians are given in the Church. This letter tells us about the nature of the Church –
as a body, as a household, as a mystery, as a communion, as a bride, and as an
army. It shows us the great inheritance that awaits us as sons and daughters,
adopted fully into the family of God. It reveals how God’s great love for us can
transform our daily lives if we allow it. Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance is
an 8-part Bible study that will enrich your faith, and show you how to live it out.
Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance begins November 14th at 9:30 am in the
Narthex. This is an eight week course. Class days are November 14,21,28;
December 5, 12,19; and January 9,16.
Grief Support Group
Our Consolation Ministry offers a monthly Grief Support Group for those who have lost a loved one, no matter how long ago the loss occurred. We meet on the fourth Saturday of every month in the Narthex meeting room, from 9:30 – 11 a.m. There is no cost to attend.
Next Meeting November 25th
Note: These regular meetings provide timely information that helps the bereaved person cope with their loss, while discussing the issues they face and listening to others who have also lost a loved one. Privacy is respected. If you have ques-tions, please call Ron or Susan Wright (916) 419-4321.
