DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

What is diversity?

‘The University of Arizona ... has a broad definition of diversity including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, gender expression, disability, nationality, language, religion, and socio-economic background’

Ferris State: ‘Diversity is the range of human differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs.’

What is inclusion?

Arizona: ‘The active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in communities (intellectual, social, cultural, geographical) with which individuals might connect—in ways that increase one’s awareness, content knowledge, cognitive sophistication, and empathic understanding of the complex ways individuals interact within systems and institutions’

Ferris State: ‘Inclusion is involvement and empowerment, where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized. An inclusive university promotes and sustains a sense of belonging; it values and practices respect for the talents, beliefs, backgrounds, and ways of living of its members.’

How are diversity and inclusion different?

‘While a diverse student population is necessary for student development, the benefits of diversity are not automatic and do not simply occur from a diverse campus. Researchers stress that institutions must become inclusive places by working in intentional ways to increase educational benefits for students and for the institution.’

Difference between diversity and personal characteristics:

Race, size, ethnicity, regional background, religion, educational interest, schooling

‘With football’s rules to lessen concussions, they might as well put dresses on the quarterbacks and receivers.’

‘If they can use the N-word, then why do whites get in trouble for using it?’

‘Why are they offended when I ask whether they speak English? I can’t tell where they are from until they open their mouths.’

‘I don’t know why they always bring up race. People are people.’

‘Profiling of Arabs at airports makes sense after 9/11.’

‘My parents didn’t own slaves so why do I have to make concessions?’

‘Islam is such a backward religion.’
