4th World Braille Day World Braille Day is celebrated annually on January 4, the anniversary 

of the birthday of Louis Braille, inventor of braille writing which relies 

on touch 

 26th World Leprosy Day For more than 50 years, on the last Sunday of January, thousands of 

people across the globe have stopped to remember those who suffer 

the horrendous effects of leprosy. 

  

27th International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust Each year, the United Nations (UN) remembers the Holocaust that af‐fected many people of Jewish origin during World War II. This day is called the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Vic‐tims of the Holocaust. The day also commemorates when the Soviet troops liberated the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz‐Birkenau in Poland on Janu‐ary 27, 1945. It is hoped that through remembering these events, peo‐ple will remember the Holocaust and prevent genocide

4th Independence Day The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, is a federal holiday that cele‐brates the adoption of the Declaration of the Independence on July 4th, 1776.  

9th Ramadan (Begins) Ramadan (also known as Ramadhan or Ramzan) is the ninth month in 

the Islamic calendar. 

It is a period of prayer, fasting, charity‐giving and self‐accountability 

for Muslims in the United Kingdom.  Fasting is compulsory for those 

who are mentally and physically fit, past the age of puberty, in a set‐

tled environment (not travelling), and are sure fasting is unlikely to 

cause real physical or mental injury to themselves.   The Fast begins 

before sunrise and no food or drink can be consumed from thereon.

12th World Youth Day  International Youth Day (IYD) was established by the United Nations in 

2000 as a means of raising awareness of issues affecting young people 

around the world. 

IYD forms part of the UN's wider World Programme of Action for Youth 

(WPAY), an initiative that aims to promote the wellbeing and livelihood 

of young people. 

Its 15 priority areas include: education, employment, poverty and hun‐

ger, the environment, drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, leisure‐time 

activities, health, girls and young women, HIV/AIDS, information and 

communications technology, inter‐generational issues, armed conflict, 

the mixed impact of globalisation, and the full and effective participa‐

16th—26th Manchester Pride Pride events have been taking place in Manchester for over 22 years and the current Manchester Pride organisation is in its tenth year of organising the festival.
