Diverse Abilities Plus is a Dorset based charity that provides a lifetime of invaluable support and care for many hundreds of children, young people and adults with physical and learning disabilities in our local community.

You would think that the winter is a time of staying indoors to beat the challenging weather and to bide our time until the spring. Not at Diverse Abilities! We have just had a hugely successful Christmas with everybody enjoying the festive spirit. Our team’s commitment and support over that period was simply fantastic. Post Christmas all of our services are full and active with the people we support, enabling them to access both indoor and outdoor pursuits, and our projects teams are focussed on half term and the Easter holidays which are coming up fast.

Our growing team of volunteers also need another big thank you. It’s amazing how Santa can be in so many places at the same time. It is also amazing how many people take part in sport events and community events for us to raise the important funds we need for all of this activity.

Coping with CHAOS, one of the services run by Diverse Abilities, is excited to be celebrating its 15th anniversary this year and is looking forward to the 16 July when the service can officially celebrate its birthday.

The service that joined Diverse Abilities in April 2011, providing support to families with disabled children in Dorset up to the age of 19, has been described by many local parents as a lifeline.

Coping with CHAOS was set up by two parents, Liz Morris and Anne Boyce, both of whom had children with disabilities. Both felt frustrated that there were not any services available for children with a disability, their siblings and parents to bring the whole family together.

Coping with CHAOS offers a variety of play sessions during the school holidays for children

with disabilities and their siblings, giving parents the opportunity of a short break, plus a weekly youth club for teenagers with disabilities, called Awesome Nights. The service also has a one-to-one befriending service and coffee mornings providing support, signposting and guidance for parents and CHAOS Juniors, a once monthly stay and play session for disabled pre-schoolers.

Since becoming a charitable organisation in 1999, Coping with CHAOS has grown and grown and now supports over 300 families in Dorset.

Our very own Eric gets all bossy in the kitchen while cooking up a storm making his favourite caramel cheesecake – the perfect dessert for mums this Mother’s Day. Here’s how you do it...

Ingredients• 200g digestive biscuits• 125g butter• 500g soft cheese• 100ml double cream• 100g icing sugar• 1 tin of caramel• 2 tablespoons chocolate spread• 1 bar of milk chocolate

STEPS

1. Grease and line an 8” round tin.

2. Melt the butter and add to crushed digestive biscuits.

3. Push into the tin pressing down firmly.

4. Chill.

5. Beat the soft cheese; add the caramel and chocolate spread and mix well.

6. In a separate bowl whisk the cream and icing sugar until stiff, then fold this into the cheese mixture.

7. Pour onto the biscuit base and chill.

8. Before serving grate chocolate over the cheesecake.

Train to gain! Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at Diverse Abilities to ensure all our staff have the right qualifications and are properly trained to work with the people we support?

As a charitable organisation that works with adults and children with profound physical and/or learning disabilities, and their families, we ensure that all staff are fully trained and feel confident in their role to make sure they undertake their job to a high standard. The charity’s in-house training team are in charge of ensuring these standards are met so the people we support receive a great service.

All of our employees complete an induction training programme so that they are well prepared for their role, which also refreshes skills and knowledge. Some services in particular that are run by Diverse Abilities are regulated by the Care Quality Commission and Ofsted and there are many courses that are mandatory to meet their standards which our staff also undertake. In addition we continually deliver courses that are not mandatory, but that we consider are best practice to offer the best training support possible.

As well as training courses, the charity supports front line employees to complete their Level 3 Health & Social Care diplomas and many of our staff have successfully achieved their qualifications.

In the last year

With good Grace Grace is aged 14 and has severe learning difficulties. She regularly visits our Children’s Team services for short breaks, overnight stays and practical support, plus holiday and after-school activities, which ensures she is living life to the full. When Grace attends the services her mother, Zoe, is assured that her daughter is safe, supported and being cared for.

Being a lively young girl, with a great sense of fun, Grace always needs to be busy and enjoys spending time with other people. Like any young teenager, she enjoys discos, girly pamper times, going for milkshakes and being with her friends. She especially likes spending time with her support workers as she looks up to them like big sisters.

Grace has used the services of Smithers, the short breaks service and Project, the after school and holiday activities, for six years, and started using our the home support service at the end of last year.

This home support provides Grace the time to expand her social inclusion and enjoy more age appropriate experiences; one weekend last December she went shopping for Christmas presents with her support worker, Georgie. Grace was extremely excited to feel the festive atmosphere and

brought some lovely gifts for her family. Also, while they were out in town they stopped for some lunch which was lovely for her to experience and feel like a regular teenager. To complete the day they wrapped the presents and labelled them on their return home.

Zoe, Grace’s mother, said: “The support that Grace has serves many needs, but the joy she experienced by going Christmas shopping for just a few hours was priceless. Working with the staff we thought this would be a great activity for her and I wanted her to understand the festive time of year and how it is about giving as well as receiving. This was a wonderful opportunity for Grace to feel like she was giving and contributing, as well as learning important life skills, and simply enjoying the festive atmosphere. The day was a whole new experience for Grace, and one she will never forget.”

During December Grace also attended Smithers ready for an overnight stay. She filled her time going for a walk to the park, making craft items, going to the cinema and seeing the Christmas lights in the dark, plus she still had time to chill out and listen to music before bedtime. The following day she went for a long walk and had a picnic lunch. She then joined in with her chosen Project My Time activity – going to see the pantomime Aladdin, before Mum picked her up to take her home later that afternoon.

Lucy Kirby, one of the Children’s Team managers, said: “We work together with Zoe to plan Grace’s activities to ensure she has the best experiences possible. One of the benefits of using all three of the services is that it allows the parents a longer break that works for the family as a whole, while Grace gets to continue having a lovely time with her friends.”

Zoe added: “Diverse Abilities Plus works so hard to diversify and meet the differing needs of all the children in its care as they develop and grow. A truly holistic package which works very well for Grace and the rest of the family.”

Mini news

Big Impact!Children supported by Coping with CHAOS, and their siblings, were lucky enough to enjoy a fun session at Lemur Landings at Tower Park in December and receive a gift from Santa following a Christmas appeal to local businesses. A big thank you goes to Innovate, Supply Shack, Spectrum Housing, Christchurch Cruisers and Sembcorp Bournemouth Water who donated either toys or funds to us so the children could receive a lovely gift.

We are excited to announce this year’s Rugby Lunch, which is taking place on 5 September at Hoburne Holiday Park in Christchurch. We’d like to thank Saffery Champness for sponsoring the event and look forward to beating last year’s fundraising total of £22,000!

A big thank you goes to Haskins Garden Centre for choosing us as its charity of the year in 2013 and raising £3,078 through events and helping us raise another £643.99 through in-store collections. Such a fantastic effort.

Following the support of Ferndown Golf Club last year, Diverse Abilities received a cheque for £4,750. The funds were raised by holding a Christmas Fayre, a Christmas Carol Concert, an Evening with golf professional Peter Alliss and a Charity Bridge Day. Donations were also made from a number of companies that supported a Charity Golf Day at the club in August.

Our Christmas cards went down a storm at the end of last year and sold many packs raising over £1,000. All the funds go direct to our services as they were lovingly designed by children at Langside School, kindly photographed by Steve Cook Publishing and printed for free by International Cards and Gifts. Thanks to everyone that purchased cards and sent to family and friends, it really helps the local community, and further afield, be aware of us and the work we do.

We’d like to say a massive thank you to our fab fundraisers - Joe Thompson, Stew Balmer and Dave O’Grady for their fundraising efforts. Stew and Dave raised just over £1,200 between them by undertaking the Great South Run and Joe Thompson who undertook four challenges, including the Great South Run, raising a total of £1,135.

Caroline and Roy took part in a charity choir performance to raise money for Smithers at Alderney Community Centre. Both had a lovely time and the event raised £350. Special thanks to all of the choir, and to Chrissy who leads them and organised the whole event, who gave their time to raise money for Diverse Abilities.

Festive spirit

While we were all enjoying too much food, visiting our families and relaxing on our sofas during the festive period, many of our services continued to run and our staff ensured that the children and adults Diverse Abilities supports enjoyed themselves at this special time of year.

Simon lives in his own bungalow and is supported 24/7. At Christmas Simon usually stays with his parents from Christmas Eve until Boxing Day but decided he wanted to cook for his parents for a change. Danielle, his support worker, was a key part of making Simon’s day special and ensuring it all ran smoothly. Without her support the day could have been very different.

Simon’s DayTo start the festivities Simon popped out for a few beers Christmas Eve before returning home and prepping the vegetables, potatoes and meat for the Christmas Day feast. The big day started with finishing meal preparation and getting ready into his Santa suit! Ready and raring to go, he went and visited his family at his sister’s house and delivered presents to his two sisters and

nephews, plus his parents who were also there. Simon also received some lovely presents from his family. Danielle, Simon’s support worker, then drove Simon home and they got both started cooking Christmas lunch for themselves and his parents. Simon was giving Danielle a few tips on cooking the festive roast as it was the first time she had cooked a roast of any sorts before! Thankfully everyone enjoyed a fantastic meal of turkey, roast potatoes, brussels and carrots and they were all very stuffed after and couldn’t even fit pudding in! The rest of the afternoon was spent chilling out, watching TV and drinking a few ciders, which was perfect.

At other servicesLangside School put on a fantastic Christmas play and all children and staff took part in the ‘Santa’s Workshop’ performance. Much fun was had by all involved.

Raising money for Diverse Abiliites is very important over this time as our services are really important over Christmas as they continue to run and support adults and children over the festive break.

News from our communityStudents get stuck into our servicesStudents from Bournemouth University’s Student Union are putting hours of their time and effort into our services. Last year a number of students visited Langside School and spent a day clearing the overgrown bushes in the sensory garden. This is the first stage in a six month project to rejuvenate the area and provide a new sensory walk and wildlife garden for the children to enjoy. Coming up this year, the students will be helping out at the Kingston Lacy allotments that our adults keep up together, more gardening at Langside and also decorating at our supported Living properties.

Green fingersThe gardens in our supported living bungalows, day opportunities centre and school are in need of a spruce up and we are looking to recruit a number of green fingered volunteers to help out. We are also looking for some assistance with maintenance at our allotments at Kingston Lacy, that the adults we support look after. If you have got what it takes to give our green areas a life, please get in touch.

Get involvedWe are supporting the Step Up to Serve campaign, launched by HRH The Princes of Wales, which is aiming to encourage more young people to volunteer and take social action in the local community. We continually encourage the local Dorset community to give something back to society by volunteering for us. Currently100 people in the local area volunteer for Diverse Abilities Plus and it also has temporary volunteers from organisations such as LV=, Nationwide and Bournemouth University. Based on these volunteers providing an average of two hours of their time every month, the value of this contribution is in excess of £25,000, which is very important for a not-for-profit organisation such as Diverse Abilities. There are many different ways that the Dorset community can volunteer and get involved with the charity. A few examples are:

Fab craft fairA local group of knitters and crotcheters are holding a spring craft fair and coffee morning on Saturday 22 March at Langside School between 10.30am and 1pm. Money will be being raised for Diverse Abilities Plus so come along and join us and see what items you can purchase while enjoying a hot beverage. No experience is required as you will be trained by a highly skilled and professional abseil instructor.

The Apprentice Challenge – 4 June 2014 Cumberland Hotel, BournemouthHave you ever wanted to be part of the BBC hit show The Apprentice? Well now is your chance to see how well you would do in our charity challenge spin off. The event is set to be full of fun, great for team bonding and very competitive as teams take part in three Apprentice themed tasks and compete against each other in order to succeed and win on the day. Eric, one of the people we support, is taking on the role of Alan Sugar so be scared, very scared!

It’s a Knockout – 22 June 2014 – Weymouth, Dorset It’s time to get out in the sunshine (hopefully!) and have a fun-filled action packed day taking part in a highly hilarious event, kindly supported by Wessex FM and Weymouth & Portland Council. Teams of eight to 12 compete head-to-head with each other in many fun and out of the ordinary games, just like the hit TV show from the 80s.

Dragon Boat Race – 20 July 2014 Poole, Dorset Go head-to-head in this year’s colourful and competitive Dragon Boat team sport event, sponsored by Spectrum Housing. It is a fun and physical event, while testing teamwork and concentration. The day is a fantastic atmosphere with friends and family lining the shores cheering the teams of nine to 17 on until the very end. No experience is necessary as you will be given all the coaching you need.

Challenge yourself for charity

Castaway Challenge – 20 – 24 September 2014 Mystery south coast locationSail away with us on this fun adventure, swap life’s luxuries for bare basics and become a castaway survivor. During the five day challenge you will learn all there is to know about survival, take part in fun challenges plus much more. No experience necessary... just lots of enthusiasm.

On your marks get set go...If you like running and getting your heartbeat going, we have plenty of great running events for you to take part in. For adrenaline junkies take part in the four or eight mile VOTWO Kamikaze Run on 18 May or 7 September. For long distance runners, why not take part in the second Festival of Running in Bournemouth on 4/5 October. There are also other races across the weekend for all ages and abilities so you can take on the 5k, 10k or half marathon if 26.1 miles is too much of a challenge for you in 2014.

Skydive – any day, any time!Gain an experience of a lifetime and feel what it’s like to fall from 10,000ft. Feel the wind against your face, the sensation of falling and see the detail of the ground below become clearer as you descend. You can skydive any day, any time, apart from Christmas Day.

Due to the fantastic success of the past two year’s Great Dorset Bake Sale we are excited to announce this year’s event is taking place from 5-11 May 2014. We

are very much looking forward to one whole week of baking and eating cake! What could be better? Plus, while baking and eating you will be helping support children and adults with disabilities in Dorset through selling your tasty treats.

The overall aim of the Great Dorset Bake Sale is to have as many bake sales as possible being held over the county all raising money for Diverse Abilities. Over

the past two years 57 bake sales have taken place and raised over £8,000.

Who’s Who.... Meet the HR and Training Team

This month we are focusing on the HR and Training Team in our Who’s Who feature. They are based at head office in Poole.

Charlotte CurtisHead of Business ResourcesAs the Head of Business Resource, Charlotte is responsible for human resources, learning and development, payroll, facilities and admin teams. She manages a diverse group of specialists who fulfil a number of critical roles for Diverse Abilities which includes ensuring it is meeting legislative requirements and improving and building on the charity’s resources to make sure it is able to provide a great service in years to come across all the services.

Liz Woodford Learning and Development ManagerLiz heads up the training team and is responsible for ensuring all training and development meets Diverse Abilities and regulatory requirements, and is of a high standard. She also manages the budget and delivers management training and development.

Stephanie Vaughan Internal TrainerStephanie has a lot of experience in the care sector and delivers training on a wide range of care related subjects, including safeguarding, disability, equality and diversity.

Melanie Cox Administrator Melanie’s role involves dealing with all the administration involved in scheduling courses, booking places, sending joining instructions, issuing certificates and updating employee records.

Sarah HarrisonVolunteer and Recruitment ManagerSarah’s role is to develop and manage the growing need for volunteers for the charity. She focuses on recruiting the right volunteers to meet the needs of each service and oversees induction, training and ongoing communication with them. Sarah has put in place an award recognition initiative for volunteers to ensure they feel valued and remain with us. When not working with volunteers, she also gets involved in the recruitment process for employees for the services. Sarah says she loves her job and is proud that the charity has some amazing volunteers!

Lee Brady HR, Payroll and Project’s Advisor Lee’s role at the charity includes advising staff and management on policies and procedures and assists with the updating of company policies and procedures. Lee is also involved in the recruitment process from arranging interviews to preparing the contracts of employment and co-ordinating inductions for new starters. He also manages the pensions and annual leave for employees.

Sandy Ranu Payroll Administrator Sandy’s role within the charity is very important to all staff as she processes the payroll and ensures everyone gets paid on time! Sandy also supports all staff on tax, national insurance, sickness, pension and annual leave queries. Sandy has the responsibility of dealing with the Inland Revenue in regards to deadlines for payment and reporting, plus any queries from the company regarding the charity’s staff.

Team volunteersAs part of the team there is also a small, but growing, number of regular

volunteers that help out for a few hours each week with various HR, training and volunteering tasks.

How did you hear about volunteering with us?

I heard about Diverse Abilities Plus through a volunteer website – www.do-it.org.uk

What volunteering do you undertake?

I work in the central office with the HR team as Administrative Assistant. I come into the office two afternoons a week so fits in with my other responsibilities.

Why did you choose to volunteer for Diverse Abilities?

The role of Administrative Assistant was suitable for me with my experience and Diverse Abilities looked like a fantastic charity so I was very interested in joining the team.

Why would you recommend volunteering at Diverse Abilities?

Everyone at the charity is very friendly and I really enjoy working with them. Also, it is lovely to see the amazing work they do to support adults and children in Dorset with disabilities.

What is your favourite memory of volunteering?

Back in 2012 Phyllis Edwards, the founder of Diverse Abilities, received a Lifetime Achievement Award’ from the Wessex Charity Awards and I was lucky enough to be in the office when she received it. I was also in the photo that was published in the Bournemouth Echo, which was very exciting.
