sacred heart mission’s new five minute Volunteer scheme links local helpers to people who need simple, occasional help, like changing a light globe or putting out the bins. i really enjoyed my recent volunteer stint at sacred heart and recommend you consider volunteering in our community.

council is thrilled with the recently completed upgrade to north port oval. the superb new rooms and upgraded grandstand will be a boon to both local football (go the borough), cricket and the broader community.

Watch for something new cooking at the st Kilda triangle over winter. to activate the triangle (as envisaged in the draft st Kilda triangle cultural charter), a national tV network is using shipping containers to create a temporary set for a reality restaurant series. i’m looking forward to seeing port phillip showcased nationally.

Kicking goals at North Port Ovalcheck out the stunning new administration and function room building (pictured), refurbished historic norm goss grandstand and upgraded change and medical rooms at north Port oval. The $6.075 million upgrade will secure the home of local football and cricket teams for decades to come. The community will also enjoy access to the facilities, with council securing an average of 10 hours per week for community use. The project was a team effort between council, the Port melbourne Football club, state government and the aFL.

One list, one numbergetting a place in long day care is definitely a hot topic for parents who live, study or work in port phillip. council has been asking parents for their ideas on ways to make the children’s services waiting list more helpful. parents say it’s great to have staff who can answer questions about finding a place and a central place to register for multiple children’s centres in one phone call.

Drop in for child health adviceport melbourne families can now speak with a child health worker at the bubup Womindjeka centre every monday to discuss any concerns they may have about their children’s development, sleeping, general behavior or emotional issues. this program exists thanks to council, bubup Womindjeka and inner south community health.

more for familiesthe clarendon family centre is set to open this month. it will provide the local community with much needed family services including expanded maternal and child health (mch) services, a toy library, space for new parent groups and playgroups, and consulting space for allied health providers.

upcoming council improvements to the middle park community centre will include upgraded office and play spaces for the kindergarten and new mch facilities. the elwood beach community centre is also set to be renovated, to enable it to provide ongoing early childhood education and care services.

council is investing, along with the state government, in rebuilding the st Kilda Life saving club. The new building will include the best facilities for beach patrols and a public toilet for people with disabilities who have greater access needs. construction of the pictured design is scheduled to start in late 2015.The building will sit beside the new stokehouse (shown in the background above).

Everybody needs good neighbourssacred heart mission is piloting a program to connect local residents with their elderly neighbours who may need help with everyday tasks. through the five minute Volunteer program, local residents can assist at-need neighbours with tasks such as taking out bins, changing light globes or checking on their welfare. a grant from council enabled the mission to pilot the program until the end of 2015.

the st Kilda triangle is playing a starring role in Restaurant Revolution, a national reality tV show.

the triangle is one of several locations around australia to become the temporary home of restaurants built from shipping containers.

this exciting temporary use provides an opportunity to test the draft cultural charter shaped by the community and council last year as part of the st Kilda triangle project.

With contestants encouraged to source local food and interior design supplies, the show is expected to boost the local economy and attract visitors during the quieter winter months.

elwood st Kilda neighbourhood learning centre (esnlc) is celebrating 30 years of fun and learning. in what was the mayor of st Kilda’s house in the 1950s, the centre hosts many activities, from computer classes to english language courses and feldenkrais. locals such as yoga instructor penny Digaletos have helped keep people coming back. being able to provide low cost, accessible activities is a rewarding feeling, says penny.

With 13 schools in port phillip, there are 28 crossing supervisors out shepherding students every weekday morning and afternoon, day in, day out. these unsung council heroes are at their post, rain, hail or shine.

nancy bright, a crossing supervisor at galilee regional catholic primary school, really enjoys the friendly greetings she receives every day from

parents and students, most of whom know her by name. now in her sixth year as a crossing supervisor, nancy has seen kids grow through primary school, and then watched as they are joined by their siblings.

While the state government contributes some funding for crossing supervisors, most of the funding comes from council.

clarendon street’s petit tresor (french for little treasure) is just one of 1,200 registered food premises in port phillip - among them over 500 cafés and restaurants, and 240 takeaway food establishments - that operate in the municipality.

opened by brothers terry and Kenny lew yew pha just a few months ago, petit tresor makes and bakes mouth-watering pastries in the french tradition.

helping out behind the scenes of port phillip’s cafés and restaurants are council’s eight environmental health officers, who between them perform about 2,600 inspections per year. environmental health officers also help people who are setting up a new business, just like petit tresor. the tasty benefits are, of course, passed onto residents.

Acland vibe by designnew seating, greenery, and event and performance spaces were suggested for the acland street precinct by around 640 community members who shared their ideas with council. locals also said they’d like the unique st Kilda vibe to be maintained. over august and september draft designs will be released for further consultation.

Street open during worksthe fitzroy street upgrade is planned to get underway in july with the new streetscape due to be unveiled in october. expect to see new palms, plantings, paving and seating, as well as new locally inspired artwork. fitzroy street, which will remain open during construction, will have temporary signage for footpaths and parking.

Stop door crashesa video capturing the experiences of bike riders on st Kilda road has been released on the enviro ehub website. st Kilda road has the highest rate of doorings (when a car door is opened onto a rider’s path) in Victoria. council has installed a flashing sign alerting drivers to this hazard.

Vicroads has extended the green walk time at six port phillip intersections. green walk signals will automatically appear most of the day at several intersections along st Kilda road, as well as at fitzroy and grey streets, and Kings Way and albert road. these clever changes, suggested by council, give walkers more time to cross without

delaying trams or cars and will especially benefit children, parents pushing prams and older walkers who find it challenging to cross wide roads in the current short time before lights change. it’s a welcome change for the Victorian college for the Deaf, who previously wrote to Vicroads about the issue.

Domain station will improve access to the st Kilda road precinct and surrounding landmarks, and include a convenient interchange between high frequency train and tram services. geotechnical investigations are now underway to help plan the project.

underground station planned for Domainas part of the melbourne metro rail project, an underground station is planned for Domain. two new nine kilometre rail tunnels will run from south Kensington to south yarra, which will enable 20,000 more passengers to use the metropolitan rail network during peak hour. the project also includes underground stations at arden, parkville, cbD north and cbD south.

foote street reserve near gasworks arts park will soon welcome the arrival of a new statue, commissioned by the lemnos gallipoli commemorative committee and supported by council to remember the role of the greek island of lemnos in australia’s anzac story.

the statue is dedicated to nurses and soldiers who served on lemnos during the anzac campaign and is loosely

framework feedback soughtcouncil wants feedback on a draft urban Design and land use framework for the st Kilda road south precinct. the precinct includes st Kilda road (south of the junction), Wellington street and parts of carlisle street, which are all areas experiencing increasing redevelopment. the framework sets directions for the design and scale of buildings, and the mix of land uses. a range of initiatives is also recommended, including a streetscape enhancement project for the Wellington street village, encouraging more cafes and other places for people to meet, and making it easier to get around on foot and by bicycle. feedback closes thursday 23 july.

parking feedback sought council is reviewing neighbourhood parking in balaclava, ripponlea and elwood. locals will be invited to comment in august and september.

meanwhile, after more than 400 responses were received, proposed parking changes for port melbourne have been reviewed. the amended scheme will be released in july and august, with new restrictions and signs established in august and september.

sharing about pathsWatch for council staff talking to bike riders and walkers on the sandridge trail about their experiences sharing the path. council recently installed signs on the elwood canal path to encourage bike riders to slow down around pedestrians after path users mentioned a small number of riders startling walkers as they rode past.
