Fire /

Forest Fire

Fire is a hazard that is common to

all the districts of the State of

Telangana. However, Adilabad has

a forest area of 6944.5 sq.kms. and

forms nearly 43% of the total area.

Therefore, the district is more prone

to forest fires.

Most of fire accidents in the district

occur due to dry branches,

household articles, dry grass and

other electrical goods catching fire.

DISTRICT-WISE HAZARD PROFILES-HYDERABAD

District Hazard Hazard Profile DRR Measures

Hyderabad Urban

flooding

One of the major hazards that the

district faces is urban flooding.

Hyderabad was home to more than

500 lakes. Most of the lakes have

been converted into residential /

commercial complexes. Haphazard

/unplanned construction activity

has led to the already poorly

functioning storm water drains.

During heavy rains, many areas are

water-logged as there is no outlet to

the heavy downpour of rain. Lakes,

which used as act as sponges for

excess water are no longer existent.

Masab Tank, a water body located

at the southern foothills of Banjara

Hills was converted into land for

residential and commercial

purposes. But that is only one the

many lakes that have disappeared

over the years. As a result, the

natural flow of the streams is

blocked and as a result, we have

waterlogging and flooding even at

the slightest instance of rain.

Structural:

Robust storm water drainage

system

Control rooms to monitor

flooding

Planned infrastructure

development.

Automatic rain gauges

Mobile para-medical teams

Airports to be made flood-proof

by providing efficient drainage

for a much higher rainfall

intensity.

All future road and rail bridges in

cities crossing drains to be

designed such that they do not

block the flows resulting in

backwater effect.

All road re-levelling works or

strengthening/ overlay works to

be carried out by milling the

existing layers of the road so that

the road levels will not be allowed

to increase.

Ensure protection of Water

Bodies and its restoration/ revival

Remove encroachments

bodies and the course of flood

water

to be developed using high

resolution satellite images / aerial

photos integrated with

socioeconomic data covering

natural resources and

infrastructure facilities on

appropriate scale at community

level.

Trainings for urban flood rescue

and management. Upgrade

equipment and skills

Adequate budget to be provided

to take care of the men, material,

equipment and machinery for O&
