Co-op’s annual meeting isa day set aside just for youIs it possible to be appreciated too much? We think not. That’s why we set aside one day

each year to show how much we care about you, our members. It’s not every day that your utility company throws a big party in your honor—a

party that includes lots of prizes, free food and entertainment. But the board of trustees at Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative firmly believes that REC members, each of whom owns a share of the cooperative, deserve a little pampering. Hence, the trustees have directed the co-op to roll out the red carpet for its membership on a special day.

This year that day of special treatment falls on September 15. Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative’s 74th annual meeting — known by many as simply “REC Day” — will take place at the Grove Civic Center.

A good time is all but guaranteed for members who take part in the REC Day festivities. Registration runs from 8 a.m. until noon, and members who register automatically qualify themselves for numerous prize drawings. They can win flat panel TVs, a washer/dryer set, a new refrigerator, and much more. Five kids will win new laptop computers, perfect tools to help them with their homework this school year. And let’s not forget about those $500 electric credits that will be awarded to members from the each of the cooperative’s nine districts.

Remember, too, that once you register, you needn’t be present to win. Your name will be announced at the meeting if you are one of the lucky winners and the co-op will contact you and let you know.

Hungry? We’ve got that covered, too.

Capital credit refund authorized

Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative’s board of trustees recently authorized the distribution of $250,000 in capital credit. Capital credit represents member equity in the cooperative.

Current and former members who received electric service from the cooperative from 1984 to 2011 are eligible for a refund. Checks will be mailed to eligible members in September 2012 for their portion of the credit retired. Amounts totaling less than $10 will roll over to future years and a check will be issued after a minimum amount of $10 is

reached.Electric cooperatives create ownership for members by allowing them to

share in the success of the business. Unlike other utilities, your cooperative exists to make sure your needs are met—not to make a profit. As a

member-owner, you share in these profits in the form of capital credit refunds.

The cooperative works hard to keep rates low, and profit (or margins) go back to you—the member/owner. Rates are set at a level necessary to pay operating costs, make payments on loans, and provide an emergency reserve. Operating costs are subtracted from

the total amount collected during the year. The balance is margins. Margins are allocated based on kWh usage.

Before distributing the capital credit, NEOEC’s board of trustees first considers the financial condition of the cooperative, the need for capital funds, and the availability of loan funds. The board is honored to serve you and to have the opportunity to share the success of 2011 with you because our success is your success.

Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative members in three districts met this summer and

exercised their right to democratic member control. In doing so, they took care of some important cooperative business.

Democratic member control is a unique component of the cooperative process. It is not only a longstanding tradition, but one of the founding principles on which the cooperative form of government was built.

By registering at district meetings and nominating individuals who they feel are best qualified to represent them on the board of trustees, cooperative members do their part to ensure the stability of the entire organization for the forseeable future.

Meetings this year were held in Districts 4, 6 and 8. Members attending the meetings received complimentary refreshments and energy efficiency gifts before helping the co-op take care of business.

NEOEC staff members took time during district meetings to provide updates on various projects thoughout the cooperative. An opportunity was provided for members to ask questions and make comments.

Prize drawings were held at the conclusion of each meeting with winners claiming electric bill credits totaling $250, $100 or $50.

All three incumbent trustees went unopposed during the proceedings and accepted nominations to serve another three-year term on the cooperative board. As nominated trustees, they now await confirmation from the cooperative membership during the general election at annual meeting Saturday, September 15, 2012, at the Grove Civic Center.

Bill Kimbrell hosted the District 8 meeting on Monday, July 16, at Vanmen Senior Citizens Center in Oaks. A total of 31 members registered at the gathering.

District 8 member Martha Glass of Oaks had her name drawn as the winner of the $250 grand prize electric credit, while Colcord resident Ronald Duncan took home

the $100 credit. A third credit of $50 went to Colcord’s John C. Marsh.

Sharron Gay hosted the District 6 meeting on Tuesday, July 17, at Bernita Hughes Elementary School cafeteria in Adair. A total of 32 registered at the meeting.

Prize winners at the District 6 meeting included W. E. Smith of Pryor (who won the grand prize $250 electric credit); Donna Harrison of Adair, who took home the

$100 electric credit; and John L. Boston, who won the third place $50 credit.

Incumbent John Myers accepted the lone nomination at the District 4 meeting held Thursday, July 19, at the First United Methodist Church in Vinita. A contingent of 36 members turned out.

Cooperative member Sami Jo Frisby of Vinita was the lucky winner of the $250 grand prize electric credit for District 4. Kenneth Flaming of Vinita won the $100 credit, and Vinita resident Charlotte Corlett claimed the $50 credit.

“I enjoyed meeting with members from each district and thought the interaction at the meetings was positive and friendly,” commented General Manager Anthony Due, following his first district meeting experience. “The cooperative spirit was certainly evident and very much appreciated between employees, trustees and members in each district. Members in these districts are to be commended for their participation.”

A look back at the 2011 annual meeting

Minutes provided for reviewThe 73rd annual meeting of the members of North-

east Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Inc., was held at the Civic Center, Grove, Oklahoma, Saturday,

September 17, 2011. Board of trustees president Dandy Risman called the meeting to order at 12 p.m. and announced that a quorum of members (1,606) had registered. Lindey Leforce delivered an invocation, immediately followed by a flag salute led by Boy Scout Troop 66 of Vinita. As master of ceremonies, Craig Hendrickson introduced the board of trustees and their spouses, along with special guests attending annual meeting. Mr. Hendrickson introduced cooperative interim general manager Rick Shurtz and then recognized the employees and attending retirees. Guest speaker Duane Highley of Associated Electric Cooperative took the stage and delivered a message on renewable energy sources and greener power supply systems. Mr. Highley spoke on sources of power supply and the cost, revealing 75% of energy is generated using coal. In closing, Mr. Highley recognized that economical energy directly impacts a community’s quality of life, and the membership is the greatest asset of the cooperative through their participation in the selection of the guiding officials. Secretary-treasurer Benny Seabourn approached the podium to deliver his report to the membership. Mr. Seabourn began by explaining his responsibility to inspect invoices. He reminded the members they may vote in all districts during an election, and pointed out the funding

used to retire capital credits was a dividend payment from the cooperative’s subsidiary, Northeast Rural Services. Mr. Seabourn continued by announcing the affidavit of mailing of the annual meeting notice was printed in the September issue of the Northeast Connection and the minutes of the 2010 annual meeting were included in the

same issue. He requested a motion to waive the reading of the minutes and to accept them as published. The motion was made by Ronnie Lane and seconded by Kenny Arnold. The motion passed without objection. Mr. Seabourn reported that the cooperative received a clean audit for the 2010 financial statements from the independent accounting firm of Briscoe, Burke and Grigsby. Mr. Hendrickson returned to the podium to introduce the Operation Round-Up board, noting they served as the credentials and election committee. Leonard Logan, attorney for the cooperative, came forward to provide the election results: In the race for the District 1 seat,

incumbent Harold Robertson received 762 votes and challenger Jim Fry received 669 votes; in the race for the District 3 seat, incumbent Everett Johnston received 866 votes and challenger Tim Andris received 526 votes; and in District 5, incumbent Dandy Risman received 1,324 votes. With election results complete, Mr. Logan asked if there was any new business to address. There being no further business, a motion was made by Bill Kimbrell to adjourn and seconded by John Ridley. The motion carried and the meeting adjourned at 12:40 p.m.

Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative is inviting area arts and crafts vendors to participate in its 2012 annual meeting September 15 at the Civic Center in Grove.

NEOEC will designate booth space to vendors on the south perimeter of the Grove Civic Center parking lot. Space is available free of charge but must be reserved prior to the meeting day. Members will gather September 15 at the Grove Civic Center for Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative’s 74th

annual meeting. The civic center is located at the northwest corner of the intersection of 18th and Main in Grove. Due to anticipated heavy traffic, members are being asked to avoid the direct highway approach to the civic center altogether in order to ensure good traffic flow.

Please follow the alternative routes detailed below. These routes will bring you behind the civic center. There, traffic attendants will be stationed to point out designated parking areas. NEOEC will provide free shuttle service from the designated off-site parking area. Those with special needs will be required to have handicap stickers in place for designated handicap parking.

Due to its rough terrain and inaccessibility by golf cart, the parking area northwest of the civic center is restricted to cooperative employees only.

FROM JAY: Travel north on Highway 59 to State Park Road (just past Dairy Queen) and turn left. Turn right (north) on Broadway.

FROM MIAMI (Highway 10/Elk River approach): Travel south and west on Highway 10. At second stoplight, go straight two blocks on Highway 59 and turn left (south) at Broadway, just before the former Grand Lake Bank building.

FROM VINITA OR MIAMI (Highway 59 approach): Travel southbound on Highway 59 to first stoplight (Leisure Lane). Turn right on Leisure Lane, left on Har-Ber Road, and right on Broadway.

Health screenings availablefor cooperative members

Alternative route toGrove Civic Center encouraged Sept. 15

Cooperative members can ensure their continued good health by taking advantage of convenient health screenings during the 2012 annual meeting.

Thanks to a partnership between NEOEC and Craig General Hospital, a battery of screenings will be made available to members during the event, scheduled September 15 at the Grove Civic Center.

Hospital staff will perform screenings at the civic center between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on September 15.

Screenings to be offered include: lipid panel (HDL, LDL triglycerides and blood sugar), PSA (prostate screening), blood pressure, blood sugar (glucose test), and pulse ox. Due to the high cost of the equipment involved, a $5 charge will apply to the lipid panel and PSA tests. All other screenings will be performed free of charge. Additional testing, as well as valuable informational materials, may also be offered by hospital staff.

It is important for those participating in the health screenings to fast for at least 12 hours to ensure accurate results.

Results will be mailed to participating members in the days following annual meeting.

An unclaimed or uncashed patronage capital refund check could be yours

Stake your claimAs a member of Northeast Oklahoma Electric

Cooperative, you are entitled to a portion of any profit made by the company. Following approval by

the cooperative board of trustees, patronage capital refund checks for the remainder of 1983, along with a percentage of 1984 through 2010, were mailed to eligible members in September of 2011.

Only checks in amounts of $10 or more were mailed to eligible members. Members with patronage capital accounts of less than $10 did not receive a check. That amount will be reserved and allowed to accumulate with each annual retirement.

NEOEC makes every effort to ensure you receive the patronage capital that is yours. It is important for the

cooperative to have your current mailing address to do this. The cooperative receives numerous patronage

capital checks that have been returned marked “address undeliverable.” Many of these returned checks do not have the correct 911 address.

Previous issues of the Northeast Connection contained listings of returned checks for members whose last names begin with the letters “A” through “S.” The listing of checks on this page and the pages that follow represent returned checks for members whose last names begin with letters “T” through “Z.”

If you see your name in this listing, please call the cooperative at 1-800-256-6405 ext. 9313 or 9329. Visit www.neelectric.com for a complete list.

Annual meeting...Doughnuts and coffee will greet early arrivals at

the civic center. As lunchtime approaches, hot dogs will be grilled up and served with soda, chips and all the fixings.

There is much more in store for REC members at annual meeting. The civic center stage will light up with some outstanding local entertainment starting at 9 a.m. A trade show on the floor of the civic center will feature interesting displays from a sampling of businesses served by REC, as well as some good deals from cooperative subsidiary enterprises.

Members are invited to browse the arts & crafts booths outside on the south end of civic center parking lot, where vendors are sure to have a variety of interesting products for sale.

A partnership between Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative and Craig General Hospital has once again made valuable health screenings available to co-op members during REC Day. Health checks are available to REC members between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the south end of the civic center. A fee may apply to cover the cost of certain tests. Those participating in the blood draw are reminded to not eat anything after midnight on September 14.

As shareholders of the cooperative, REC members also have a unique opportunity to play a vital role in the direction of the cooperative. They can do this by voting in the general election. Three unopposed incumbent board trustees await confirmation of their district meeting nominations on the 2012 ballot. Those trustees are John Myers from Vinita, Sharron Gay of Adair and Bill Kimbrell of Oaks.

With so much to do and see, perhaps REC Day doesn’t come around often enough. After all, we never tire of showing you how much you are appreciated.
