RADM Kelly addresses a group of Japanese media during a brief luncheon at Naval Air Facility Atsugi’s Chief Petty Officer’s

Club.

NAF ATSUGI, JAPAN – Commander, Naval Forces, Japan, Rear Admiral Jamie Kelly paid one last visit to NAF Atsugi, March 26th, before retiring in April. During his visit to At-sugi, Kelly met with Japanese media to explain the need for Atsugi-based squadrons to conduct Field Carrier Landing Practice evolutions, visited Carrier Air Wing FIVE’s flight simulator, held all hands calls with CVW-5 and NAF Sailors, Master Labor Contractors and DoD Civilians. To cap off his visit, Kelly attended the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force Fleet Air Wing FOUR Cherry Blossom Festival, held at one of their squadrons’ hangar.

Joe Mortimer, Bronze Legacy Life Member, Senior Vice Commander, VFW Post 9612 was invited by Lieutenant Shingo Okazaki, Public Affairs Officer, Fleet Air Wing FOUR, Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF), to attend the JMSDF Cherry Blossom Festival. Hill 180 VFW Post 8180 absorbs Skivvy 9!

VFW Post 10216 recently held a recruiting drive with the 303rd Intelligence Squadron of Osan Air Base, known as “Skivvy 9”. The Post Senior Vice Commander and our Membership Chairman Shawn Watson worked with their “Top Three” NCO organi-zation and MSgt Shane Price to host monthly visits by Skivvy 9’ers to the Post Home. They received brief-ings on the history of the “Hill 180 Memorial Post”, tours of the Posts Korean War museum and ended with swearing in by Post Commander Ron Tichota and coin and pin presentation by incoming Commander Shawn Watson and 303rd First Sergeant SMSgt Kottke (already a Life Member). The Post signed up 12 new members, to include an all important five new Life Members. Shane says he hopes to bring interested airmen each month and Commander Tichota desires to “adopt” the 303rd under the VFW’s “Adopt a Unit” Program. Post 10216 continues to support VFW membership drives.

Seems like Afghanistan is a very good place to meet people. Above: Jerry Prowant, Life Member of Post 10216, and, Yes, That's me with Tommy! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Lasorda

VFW Post 10216 made a donation of $300.00 to Osan’s Military Working Dog Team to save the life of one of their K-9 dogs. His name is “Bony” and he is a 9-year old military veteran who is being retired for medical reasons.

Bony would normally be euthanized, so the MWD Team approached the VFW for donations so that Bony could be relocated to the U.S. and given to a welcoming family. Our donation, along with money raised during fund raising efforts, were enough to pay for Bony’s travel, medical surgery and medicine.

Many of the K-9 Team are active VFW members. SSgt Gary Eyster is active in our Post and shown here with our incoming Post Com-mander Shawn Watson. Post Commander Ron Tichota presents a $300.00 donation to the NCOIC MSgt Kalal. The MWD Team and their K-9’s have a tough job pro-tecting our air bases and have earned the respect of our VFW.

District VI — Guam/Saipan

Veterans of Foreign Wars in the CNMI as well as those in active duty began yesterday their annual observance of Memorial Week in honor of the sacrifices of their fallen comrades. The Memorial Week is from May 19-25, with Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos signing the proclamation at the Governor's Office conference room yesterday. Joining him during the signing ceremony was Senate Presi-dent Pete Reyes, himself a Vietnam War veteran. Two of the 70 members of the Echo Company stationed in Kuwait who are here for R&R were also in attendance, Staff Sgt. Fran-cisco Ada and Sgt. Royal Kelby. The proclamation states that by honoring soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guard men, it is a way of renew-ing the commitment to uphold the democratic ideals they fought for. In observance of this special week, the people of the CNMI are paying tribute to fallen veterans for their unselfish, dedi-cated service to the nation. The Memorial Week will culminate on Memorial Day, May 25, with formal ceremonies to be held at the CNMI Veterans Ceremony in Marpi. Rear Admiral William D. French, commander of the U.S. Naval Forces in the Marianas, will be the keynote speaker. French, along with Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, military service members and veterans, will lead the laying of wreaths.

On that day, a prayer for peace throughout the world will be offered to remember what was gained and what was lost during times of war. “From the bravery of the men at the Valley Forge, to the daring of Normandy, the courage of Iwo Jima and the steady resolve in Afghanistan and Iraq, our men and women in uniform have won for us every hour that we live in free-dom,” the proclamation states. “As we honor those who have served and have been lost, we better understand the meaning of patriotism and citizenship, and we pledge that their sacri-fices will not be in vain.”
