Excelsior Sports Correspondent SRINAGAR, Oct 3: Vikram Club Baramulla today defeated Singpora Sports Club by 2-1 to win the final of Kashmir Open Hockey Championship 2017 played here at Bakshi Stadium. MLC Khursheed Alam who was the chief guest on the occa- sion gave away the winning tro- phy to the Baramulla team. Highlighting the importance of sports, the MLC said it is important that youth are indulging in sports activities as it is the sports which inculcate values of team spirit, and sports- manship in a player. He said the Government is making serious efforts to pro- mote the sports culture in the State by developing infrastruc- ture at various places. The tournament which saw the participation of 14 teams had started last month on September 25, 2017. The Championship was held under the overall direction Sheikh Fayaz Ahmed, Director Sports and Madan Lal, Joint Director Sports, Jammu. Sunil Kumar, DYSSO Samba was the organizing secretary, while Krishan Singh, Principal Nav Vidya Dhalot was present on the occasion. The top performers of the competition included Sudesh Kumar, Sanjay Gupta, Kulvir Singh, Sumant Singh, Ravi Singh, Avtar Singh, Bopinder Singh, Keshav Singh, Ashok Kumar, Arjun Kumar, Rajkumar, Nav Jyoti, Jyoti Jamwal, Samdeep Kour, Pream Rajni, Baba Dita, Jagmohan Singh, Rakesh Sharma and Ajay Kumar. In event 30 sec, Kanav Sharma bagged 1st position in Under-19 boys, while in 30 sec U-17 girls, Rubina Choudhary won 1st place and in Under-19 girls, Fazia Basin. In Endurance Under-19 boys, Shubam Sharma claimed 1st place, while in girls Under-17, Kirna Bamotra clinched 1st place. In Event Double Under, Pankaj Kumar won 1st place in Under-17 boys, while Shaveena Jain claimed 1st place in Under- 19 girls. The 1st position holders in the Championship have been selected to represent the State. Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 3: Two day Pencak -Silat Championship organized by the Pencak Silat Association of J&K in the MAM Indoor Stadium today concluded in the presence of Kavinder Gupta, Speaker State Assembly who was the chief guest on the occasion. The district level sports event organized in the memory of Late D. K. Mahajan, was a first of its kind for the game in the State and was concluded in the presence of senior sports persons and renowned personalities. Arvind Gupta, BJP State treasurer, Nalin Mahajan, Gourav Arora President, PSAJK, Sports Officer Satish Mahajan and Navneet Mahajan, son of late D. K. Mahajan also graced the occa- sion. Kavinder Gupta, while addressing the participants and the gathering on the occasion, said that the sports always played an important role in the develop- ment of person’s personality as well as working capacity. He said that the sports persons are an asset to the society and the nation, who always contribute to the progress of the nation. He appreciated the organizers for their keen interest to promote the event in the State and said that all the sports associations must do their bit to create the awareness of physical activity in the State. Kavinder, while distributing the prizes among the winners and the participants, said that, seeing the activity level and the benefits of the game, he will recommend the game for its introduction in the Asian Games next year so that it can be boosted among the youngsters as they must incorpo- rate active games in their lives. He also gave a message to the parents for pushing their wards for the outdoor activities in order to achieve their wholesome development. Organizers told that sports teaches a person to keep the body fit and is a wonderful technique for the self defence especially for the ladies. J&K team for 33rd National Jr Athletics Championship selected Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 3: Jammu and Kashmir Amateur Athletic Association conducted selection trials to pick the State team for participation in 33rd National Junior Athletics Championship to be held at Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh from November 10 to November 14, 2017. The trials were held under the supervision of Iqbal Singh, coach of J&K State Sports Council. Over 100 athletes drawn from various districts of the State took part in the trials. The selected probable will attend the coaching camp from October 15 to November 5, 2017, before leaving for the venue on November 6, 2017. Inter-Collegiate Kabaddi Tournament inaugurated at GDC Kathua Excelsior Sports Correspondent KATHUA, Oct 3: Inter- Collegiate Kabaddi (Men) Tournament was inaugurated in an impressive opening ceremony here today. In the inaugural match, MAM College defeated GGM Science College. In a closely fought match, MAM College scored 31 points and Science College 25 points. The historic one day wrestling event was organized by Domana Dangal Committee in Association with J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association under the supervision of Raj Hussian, President of Domana Dangal Committee and President J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association, Shiv Kumar Sharma. Mahajan, was a first of itskind for the game in the State andwas concluded in the presence ofsenior sports persons andrenowned personalities.
