Editor’s Letter

February is one of my favorite months. Yes, my birthday is in the month {February 13th holla}, but it is not just that. There is something about it being so short that makes people act a little differently. This month instead of taking on the typical in-love couple and how to make Valentine’s Day perfect for your significant other we decided to make this the “Best Friends” issue. We have stories about best friends, a guide to throwing the perfect “Galentine’s Party” {thanks Parks & Rec}, how to date your best friend, and so much more. But it is not just best friends, it is the Oscars. One of our favorite times of the year is award season and we chose some of our favorite dresses that we hope to see on some of our favorite people. We also chose our picks for the Academy Awards and we are looking forward to see who was right. Lastly, our cover girl is a friend of mine who recently started righting for College Fashionista. She shares her experiences and her fashion guru advice on pages 18 through 29. My Oscar picks: Best Picture: The Theory of Everything // Lead Actor: Michael Keaton // Lead Actress: Julianne Moore // Supporting Actor: J.K. Simmons // Supporting Actress: Patricia Arquette As always, remember to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and that District is “your right to a beautiful life.” Keep It Beautiful,

Music

Smoke + Mirrors // Imagine Dragons // We are going to be honest when we say we love Imagine Dragons. No lie. Every time one of their albums comes out we jam to it and we expect nothing less this time around. Some of our favorites include “I Bet My Life” and “The Fall.”

Driver // In Tall Buildings // We kind of love these funky beats. We are a big fan of the album’s “Un-mistakable” and “Flare Guns.” It is the perfect background music for your next dinner party or for when you want something where you can just listen and not think about what they are say-ing.

Flyaway Garden // Break-fast in Fur // “Shape” is on all of our playlists. This is another group who’s music is perfect to listen to when you have a lot of tasks to get done and you do not want to be distracted by lyrics {in our case by sing-ing lyrics out loud and dancing around}. This al-bum really focuses on the music.

15 Things You Didn’t Know About...The Oscars, the awards of the stars, have taken place since 1929. The cer-emony was first televised in 1953 and now over 40 million people view it each year from all over the world. This year all different movies are nominated for the Best Picture including The Imita-tion Game, Selma, Boyhood, Whiplash, & The Theory of Everything. Here are 15 things you probably did not know about the little gold men & their winners.

No1 An Oscar statue weighs 8.5 lbs.

The Red Carpet is 500 feet long at the Dolby Theatre.

There are 700 fan bleacher seats on the Red Carpet.

Dorothy Chandler Pavilion has hosted the most Academy Awards.

Dolby Theatre holds 3,300 seats on Oscar Night.

Gone With The Wind is the longest Best Picture winner in history clocking in at 234 min-utes.

Meryl Streep picked up her 19th nomination this year, the most of any actor, male or female.

Not a single winner from the 2014 Oscars was nominated this year.

Wes Anderson got his first-ever Best Director nomina-tion for The Grand Budapest Hotel.Boyhood only took 39 days to complete.

Nine out of 20 acting nomi-nees this year portray real

people.

To qualify for Best Picture, a film needs to be at least 40 min-utes long, have shown at an LA

cinema for at least a week in the previous year and have a projection resolution of 2048 x 1080 pixels.

The sealed envelope dates back to 1941. In 1940 the LA Times broke the Academy's

embargo and published the names of all the winners before the ceremony.

These days a 45-second limit is imposed on speeches. Any-one straying past that mark is

played off by the orchestra.

Why did you start writing for CollegeFashionista?I’ve always been interested in street style, and CollegeFashionista is all about street style of college campuses, so it sounded pretty cool. Plus people in Austin are super fashionable so I thought it would be fun to be able to docu-ment the cute outfits I see on cam-pus.

What do you want to do in the future with your photography & fashion writing? The dream is to work for a fashion magazine, as the Editor-in-Chief. But I’d be happy with just running a fashion blog that people would look to for inspiration.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.I’m a 18 year old curly haired Ohioan studying at UT Austin, who loves pugs, Prague, and potatoes. I’m find myself to easily get obsessed with things, and I’m basically always on Pinterest or Tumblr trying to find my newest obsession.

What do you most enjoy about writing for them? It’s really awesome to see my own writing up on a website with other fashion obsessed college students. I’ve been into fashion for a while, and it’s so nice to finally feel as though I’m doing something about my obsession.

How did you start writing for CollegeFashionista?I learned about CollegeFashioni-sta while watching videos on Teen Vogue’s YouTube channel, and I decided to check out their web-site. There was a button reading “Want to become a Style Guru?” so I clicked on it. I went through the application, wrote a mock article, and the rest is history.

Who is your BFF & why are you two BFFs?Matt Carey; We just get along so well, and it’s nice to have someone I feel so comfortable around. Plus he’s my boyfriend so it’s kind of an added bonus. What kind of fashion adventure would you have with your BFF?I love to travel so it would be fun to go all around the world with him and just find the most insanely gorgeous clothing from each country.

What is your go to store in a mall?Topshop, if there is one, or H&M if there isn’t.

Tell us one interesting fact about yourself.I lived in Slovakia on foreign ex-change for my junior year of high school.

What store would you live in if you could? Target. I’d be set for life

What is your favorite thing about February? Mardi Gras! Cajun food is deli-cious (as is king cake), and this year I’m actually going to New Orleans for the celebration.

If you could wear one outfit for the rest of your life what would it be?High waisted skinny jeans, chunky black heeled boots, and a cute and comfy sweater.

Where in the world would you love to do a fashion photo-shoot? Krakow, Poland. It might seem odd, but I live for cute, old, Euro-pean cities.

I can talk to him about anything and everything. There are few people I can actu-ally open up to and trust. But whatever ’s on my mind, he’s always there to listen and give some sound advice. We can talk for hours upon hours, to the point where the

conversation revolves around no more than silly stories and total nonsense. Nonetheless, he listens anyway. Even when I’m just rambling about how much I want to shave off all my hair be-cause I am so done with doing my hair every day (and yes, I do always say I want to shave my head).

I can actually be myself around him because we have been close friends for so long. There are countless things I can say and do around him that I would never be able to around or with anyone else. There are times when he is the only one who

sees me without makeup or hears me screech every single song from Frozen at the top of my lungs (and he joins in, too!)

Dating Your bffOne girl’s five reasons to date your best friend. Speaking from experience, dating your guy best friend is the best! Although it took me way too long to realize that I had feelings for my guy best friend, I’m so glad I finally did. I am so oblivious sometimes, it ’s ridiculous! I am definitely a list maker of sorts so I decided to think about why my relationship with my best friend is better than everyone else’s relationship (yes, better than everyone else’s). Here are some reasons why dating my “guy best friend” is so awesome.

No

1

No

2 He is my “sarcastic soul mate.” Sarcasm is one of my many talents, so it ’s great to have someone join me on my sarcasm. It ’s the best thing ever share a sense of humor with someone. Who else is going to be the brunt of all my sarcastic comments and

then totally bounce back with an even more clever remark? That’s what it ’s like to have a “sar-castic soul mate.”

No

3Inside jokes. Enough said. I think it ’s entirely possible for us to carry an incredibly long conversation composed completely of inside jokes that have been accumulated over the years. Inside jokes are some of the greatest things about having a best

friend. When other people hear them they think we are completely insane, but we don’t really care what they think!

No

4

Page 31: District February

Honestly, friendship. The best thing about dating my guy best friend is that we are actually friends. Some people dive into relationships on a whim because they are physically attracted to each other or because they like the attention

of someone being interested in them, but fail to develop a real friendship. We were friends first and that’s what I think has made our relationship so strong.

Valentine’s Day is not just for lov-ers anymore; but also for those special friends in your life who always have your back. So how do you throw your BFFs the ultimate Valentine’s Day party? Well hopefully you know their favorite foods, drinks, sweets, and even activities already putting you ahead of the game! Now it’s just about putting everything together: So let’s get started on the planning! First things first, pick a venue and a date. House parties are the best because you can do a wide range of activities, and bonus, everyone can stay as long as they’d like. If you don’t have a place of your own opt for your favorite brunch spot. Brunch is the perfect time to get “loose with your boos.” Like any other party, you want to announce your BFF Valentine’s Day party in a cute, sincere way. Instead of sending a normal boring text message, spruce it up with an online invitation. Pingg has the most adorable invitations that you can mail out or email. Your friends will get a kick out of it and seeing your added effort just to invite them will get them excited for the fun filled day. Now, onto the menu. So we picked Brunch as our party example right? If you’re doing a restaurant then you’re all set, but why not go the extra mile and make your BFFs some delicious desserts

that can double as sweet little favors? [Chocolate cov-

ered strawberries, Chocolate covered lol-

How To Throw A Valentine’s Day Party for Your BFFs

Galentine’s Daylipops] These chocolate hearts are sold by Sherri’s Berries. There are even chocolate roses that can be used as both dessert and decor. Is your home the venue? Great! Now you need some fabulous but timeless reci-pes that won’t take you all night/morning to put together: a pancake bar accompa-nied by various fruit toppings they can choose from, omelets, mac & cheese bites, potatoes wrapped in bacon, and of course desserts like cupcakes, cheesecake cups, or a good old fashion chocolate cake. Get this pancake idea from Tips from a Typical Mom. Decorations are essential to any party because they set the mood. Whether you are 15 or 35 years old, you want your deco-rations to be easy but on point. For the tables, try glass vases with red and pink flowers and some Valentine’s Day confetti surrounding them. Get some balloons and have them drop from your ceiling (cut the strings high enough that no one will be hitting their head, but low enough to give your room a festive feel). And if you chose a restaurant, don’t worry, you can still spice up the tables with some single stem roses in those cute $1 IKEA vases. One for ev-ery BFF. If you’re crafty (like me!), feel free to go a little further and add each BFF’s name to the vases with chalkboard stickers or a cardstock tag. Last step. HAVE FUN - but HELLO - they’re YOUR BFFS so that should be a given!

Visiting a new cityAs I said before, I recently went to San Francisco with Alex. We had both gone when we were younger so exploring as adults was going to be a completely different experience. We stayed up late, went hiking, and visited places tourists usually stray from and only cities natives go. All activities

that were wonderful to do together. Of course traveling by yourself can be (and is) a lot of fun, but visiting a new city with your best friend is completely different. You’ll have someone to share the memories with and to be in all of your ridiculous selfies with too.

Destination FriendshipWhere to go with your bestie!

Alex has been my friend since middle school and my best friend since high school. We have taken countless mini vacations, day trips, and etc. to some of the most random and fun places one could imagine. Recently we spent the weekend in San Francisco, inspiring me to think about all of the wonderful places we’ve been and how they’re the perfect location for any best friends to go! So here are my top 10 in no particular order.

2An Amusement ParkI love amusement parks and they’re the best way to spend a day with your best friend. Alex and I like to “people watch” at amusement parks and give everyone background stories. While this exact thing can be done anywhere, it is a lot of fun to do while you’re waiting in line to ride Space Moun-

tain at Disney Land or the Ferris wheel at your local amusement park. Plus riding rides and eating mounds of cotton candy is better in a pair.

The BeachI love spending time in the sand especially when I’m with my friends. Living in Southern California makes it really easy to go to the beach and sometimes (like in the picture) you can even meet a celebrity. One of my favorite beaches in California is Venice Beach because of the atmosphere

and all of the opportunities to meet fun and interesting people. When we went we met Frankie Muniz and got a chance to see a “Freak Show.” There’s no one better to freak out over your childhood celeb crush with than the same girl who put up with you wanting to watch every movie of his as pre-teens.

No

The MallThe ultimate trip to take with any friend (a trip you should have already taken countless times) is to the mall. There you can scope out guys/girls, shop, and eat tons of samples from the food court. Or just eat samples from the food court because that’s my favorite part about the mall. That and the

Disney store! My friends and I always stop in and try on all the hats or any other fun items that will actually fit us.

No

5A ConcertConcerts are always a lot of fun! Whether they’re tickets that you won or brought yourself, concerts are a great way to relieve stress and go out with your friends. There is just something about being in a room with a ton of people you don’t know and listening to them love a group or artist just as

much as you guys do that creates a stronger bond between friends.

By, Ashley of Twe1ve2

Page 35: District February

35

HikingI’m an outdoors kind of girl and Alex is a little bit more of the opposite. However, we are able to compromise on hiking every now and then depending on the location. Hikes are a great way for you to bond with a friend. When I go hiking I like to play a game entitled left or right. Every time you

get to a fork in the trail where you can go left or right one of you decides which way to go. As it can possi-bly get you lost I suggest playing in the early part of the day. Loaded up with snacks and plenty of water, a regular hike can turn into a real adventure.

No

6

Going on a Road tripRoad trips are basically forcing you and your friends to grow a stronger bond. You’re stuck in a car for hours listening to music, switching off on driving, and stopping at every tourist attraction. You’ll take

countless pictures and sing your favorite songs on the radio with each other. Honestly nothing is better than going on a road trip with your friends. After all who doesn’t want to live young, wild, and free for at least a small part of their youth.

Having a SleepoverAfter all the fun at the mall, head over to one of your houses for a sleepover. You are never too old to have one. Alex and I are frequent

sleepover buddies. I’ve stayed at her apartment multiple times as well as her old house. There was one point that I spent so much time over there (especially in the kitchen) that her dad referred to me as the kitchen girl. Sleepovers don’t have to be at your house or theirs. Create a mini-

getaway, if just for a night, and rent a hotel room in your city. Set up the en-suite bathroom as a spa, stock up on snacks, and play hide-n-seek around the hotel. Whatever you decide, wherever you end up, all that matters is you’re in good company.

ClubbingMy first time clubbing was when Alex and I went to San Francisco, and honestly I recommend that everyone do this at least once with a friend, best friend, soulmate (friend you literally couldn’t live without). We had such a blast dancing with each other, making friends with the people in the line

for the bathroom and singing at the top of our lungs when a familiar song came on. The music was good and whenever we didn’t almost lose each other we had a blast. Not to mention if you’re legal drinking age club-bing can be even more fun!

Go to a movieLast but not least who doesn’t love a good movie date? Everyone right! So why not go out to a movie with your best friend. I love scary movies and I think they are so much fun when seen with a friend. You guys can hide behind the popcorn together and scream insanely

when the monster is revealed. If you’re not into scary movies, you can see whatever else fits your fancy. A mov-ie date is typically reserved for your boyfriend or girlfriend, but I think it ’s better when done with a friend. You can’t exactly swoon over the movie’s lead with your significant other. And, after all, aren’t we all kind of dating our best friend anyway? Just not in the exact same way we’re dating our significant other.

bff Diaries 20 years ago I met my best friend Roselyn, aka “Roz,” at the school lunch table. One day, I’m eating my lunch when I see this girl a few seats down, staring at me and imitating the way I’m eating (I guess I chew funny). I looked over at her and we instantly started laughing. From that day forward we be-came peanut butter and jelly. I have yet to meet another person who has been blessed with a million different talents as Roz. She inspires me to want to do everything.

Roz and I have been through the best and not so best milestones in life, but

I’m happy to have faced them with her. Most people say blood is thicker than water, but anyone with a friendship like mine and Roz’s knows otherwise. I can’t imagine not having her by my side. The above picture is from her wedding day [September 30, 2013] where I helped her get dressed like the proud Maid of Honor I was. Here’s a little snippet of my wedding speech - “Of all the years Roselyn has done my hair and helped me get ready for big events, it was my honor dressing her as a bride today.”

I am blessed to call her my best friend today, tomorrow, and always!

bff Diaries It was a Wednesday, which happens to be “college night” at one of the popular clubs in Atlanta. The semes-ter was over and after a long week of job hunting, my best friend, Zöe and I decided that we deserved a night out. We say that we want to go out all the time, but when the time actually comes to do it, we end up making up excus-es and decide that it’s just too much effort to actually get ready and drive all the way there, so we end up just going to sleep. Other times, we have gotten ready with a full face of makeup, hair done, dress, heels, all of the works, drove all the way to the club, paid to park and then decided that the line was too long and we weren’t actually feeling it that night. I am embarrassed to admit that is literally something I have done. That’s usually how most things in my life tend to pan out, but that is not what we were go-ing to do on this night. We promised ourselves that we would go out and let loose and have fun, which is something we had been lacking in our lives. We went all out; we did our makeup complete with a smokey eye, I curled my hair, put on my “club” dress and Jeffrey Campbell knock offs, walked the long distance from our dorm to the car, which believe it or not is usually a challenge for us, and drove 20 minutes to the club in Atlanta. We pulled into the small parking lot directly next to the club only to find it full and a glimpse at the line to get in. The line wrapped around the build-ing into the parking lot. I was ready to back out right then, but we had promised that we would actually make it in the door this time, so we went to another parking lot a few blocks away and walked to the club only to be greeted by the massive line that we would have to stand in while wearing 5 inch heels. I have the patience of a five year old in a grocery store. This is a flaw of mine that I am very aware of, but I just hate waiting for anything and ev-erything. The line for this club was no exception. On top of having to wait, we both suddenly had to pee and the only bathroom we had access to was the one inside of the club Waiting got progressively worse as we stood with what looked like no end in sight. I wasn’t even in the mood to dance anymore. I just wanted to pee. As the line moved, people left and we got closer and closer to the door. As we were approaching the place to pay, a girl came up and offered us a deal the club was having that would get us in for $5 cheaper and then free all summer. I am not one to pass up a good bargain, so we agreed not knowing that we would just have to wait in another line. I was beginning to develop one of those pee cramps that

only come when you’ve held it in for way too long. After waiting in another line for what seemed like eternity, we finally made it into the club. The first thing that was in the obscure side door we were sent to was a bathroom and I have never been so happy to see a disgusting club toilet in my life. Once I had relived my pee cramp, I still wasn’t re-ally in the clubby mood, but I had been through too much to leave now, so we went upstairs to the dance floor. There was a pole in the middle of the room, which wasn’t there the last time I had been there. A girl that I recognized from the line outside was working that pole like it was her job, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t. We awkwardly made our way to the middle of the dance floor and I found myself surrounded by girls moving their butts in ways I can only dream of maneuvering. We literally just stood there. I’m not sure why I couldn’t bring myself to even sway. I wasn’t in the mood to get hit on by random guys and was about

to tell Zöe that we should move to the side when, as if on cue, a guy comes up behind me and just starts dancing. Then, when I turn around and say no, he gets offend-ed. I don’t understand why guys think this is okay. After I just said, “no”, he countered with, “Why did you come to the club, then!?” As if the only reason I would go to a club is for random guys to grind on me without my consent to do so because that is something that is fun and enjoyable for me. Neither of us were having fun and we knew that wasn’t going to change. So, after standing in line for about 45 minutes, paying to park, and paying to get in, we were in the actual club for about 15 minutes if you count the time we spent in the bathroom. We pretty much spent $40 to pee in a club.

We walked out of the club and down the long stairs to the street. A bouncer asked, “Are you really leaving? Why are you going so early?!” I was tired, annoyed and my feet hurt, so I exited by shouting “Because I want to and I do what I want”. We walked a little ways down the street until I saw a few steps and decided that I couldn’t go on and needed to take a break and sit. As a sat on some steps in the middle of Atlanta at midnight on a Wednesday after attempting to go to a club, I decided to take a moment to reevaluate my life. I felt like I was in a movie and thought that maybe I would have some great revelation. Unfortu-nately, all I managed came up with was that I would write about this. I don’t even really like going the club.

Valentine’s Day treats for everyone in your life.

Sweets for your SweetBy,Ally of Preppy Little Lesbian & Janeen of OK Skinny

When you think of Valentine’s Day, what do you think? Lots of red, pink and couples everywhere professing their love for one another. This Valentine’s Day, show your love for your friends who are always there for you, even if you do have a significant other! One of my favorite ways to do that is to bake! It’s super fun to do, and the end result is always yummy! Here are a few of my favorite Valentines Day baking ideas for your friends! Oreo Pops// These are so cute! They also don’t look like they’d be super hard to do either. Perfect little treat to give to your friends! S’more Pops// I’ve never seen anything like this before! They look so yummy, and again, they seem super easy to put together! Peek-A-Boo Cake// I’m a big fan of these kind of cakes. They look simple from the outside, and once everyone cuts into the cake, they’ll be surprised about how much effort you put into the cake! Cupcakes// Who doesn’t love cupcakes? You can decorate them anyway you want, use different icings, and cake batters to make them personal for all of your friends favorites! Brownies// I love this super simple idea for brownies! All you have to do is cut your brownies into heart shapes and add a little arrow and bam! You have a super cute idea for your besties!

Couture Week in Paris Couture week in Paris kicks off the much awaited s/s “Fashion Month.” Last Wednesday (January

28), Valentino couture made its way onto the runway displaying a beautiful, ethereal collection, though nothing less is ever expected of the Italian

label. Hand painted clouds, and an estimated 2000 hours of embroidery on a single dress serve

as a reminder of why lines branded as couture are truly wearable art. PACELLI
