C. BRIEF NOTES ON THE DISTRICT
A brief History of the Distrit : From around 7th century AD till around the advent of British rule, for around a millennium, history of
Bankura district is identical with the rise and fall of the Hindu Rajas of Bishnupur.
Centre of the famous Malla Kingdom of Western Bengal, Bankura and its surrounding regions are identified with its historical and cultural
significance for the period of Middle Ages. Vaishnavism, which gained the status of state religion of the Malla Kingdom in seventeenth
century A.D., shaped the culture of the region. The Malla Kingdom was annexed by British East India Company in 1765 and the modern
Bankura district took its form in 1881 and was named after its headquarter.
In 1879, the district acquired its present shape with the Thanas of Khatra and Raipur and the outpost of Simplapal being transferred from
Manbhum, and the Thanas of Sonamukhi, Kotulpur and Indas being retransferred from Burdwan. However, it was known for some time as
West Burdwan and in 1881 came to be known as Bankura District.

The District Bankura is bounded by latitude 22°38’ N and longitude 86°36’ E to 87°47’. It has an area of 6,882 square km (2,657Sqm). River Damodar flows along the
north and north-east boundary of the district. The adjacent districts are Bardhaman in the north, Purulia in the west and Paschim Medinapore in the south.
Bankura is located in the western part of the State of West Bengal and has been described as the “connecting link between the plains of Bengal on the east and Chota
Nagpur plateau on the west’. It is a part of Bardhaman Division of the State and included in the area known as “Rarh” in Bengal. The areas to the east and north-east are low
lying alluvial plains, similar to predominating rice lands of Bengal. The western portion, with ferruginous soil and hard beds of laterite, marks the gradual descent from the table
land of Chota Nagpur to the delta of lower Bengal, consisting largely of spurs projecting from the western tableland and of low swelling ridges. However, there is no marked
ridge of hills. Much of the area is covered with jungles. In the northern portion of the district the alluvium contains seams of coal belonging to the Raniganj system.
The climate, especially in the upland tracts to the west, is much drier than in eastern or southern Bengal. From the begning of March to early June, when the monsoon
setsin, hot westerly winds prevail. During the long dry season large extents of red soil with hardly any trees and lend the country a scorched and dreary appearance. In the
eastern part the eye constantly rests on wide expanses of rice fields, green in the rains but parched and dry in summer. The monsoon months, June to September, are
comparatively pleasant, as the weather is not as sultry as in other parts of Bengal.
