Corral Design GuideSurface mural design options for scooter and bicycle corral zones.
How to Use the GuideThe guide consists of two types of corral designs. The first set of eight (8) designs are “full color” designs which consist of two layers: a base layer and a stencil layer. The second set of five (5) designs are “stencil only” designs and consist of one layer: a stencil layer. Each design is followed by the recommended stencil dimensions for that design. These sizes can vary as needed, depending on preference.
When painting, follow the order of the layers to recreate the designs. Here is the first full-color design with annotations:

Stencil layer: cut out the stencils, lay them out as recommended, and paint. The color will be more vibrant if you paint a white stencil layer first, and then apply the color coat on top of the white.
Base layer: paint this first, then let it dry. Allow at least 24 hours to dry between coats.
Completed design related to typical layout of bicycle racks, scooter area, curb, and roadway.
Recommended color guide.
Step by Step Guide1. Choose your design. Full-color designs require an extra step of
painting the entire ground area and then painting the stencil layer, whereas stencil layers are one layer using just stencil patterns on the asphalt.
2. Acquire stencils, paint, and paint supplies. Order the stencils associated with your design or cut them yourself. See the resource list for an example of a company that will cut your stencils. Alternatively, you can cut them yourself out of cardboard, poster board, thin plastic, or other similar product. Acquire your paint. Use the color code guide when ordering paint from your local hardware store, paint store, or arts and crafts store. The colors do not have to be an exact match; use your judgment. Mini rollers and/or full-size rollers are recommended for the base layer. Spray paint, a 2”-4” paintbrush, or mini rollers can be used for the stencils.
3. Prep the surface. It is recommended to power wash the surface with an asphalt degreaser. This product is found at any hardware store or online, usually under the name “driveway cleaner”. Simple Green is a good brand option available at Home Depot. If you do not have a power washer you can also use a deck brush (attached to a pole) and a degreaser. Make sure the surface is completely dry before painting. A leaf blower will aide in drying the surface more quickly if needed. If you wash one day and paint the next, be sure and sweep the area right before painting
Stencil sizes. These can be hand cut out of cardboard, poster board, or thin plastic. You can also choose to have them cut professionally. See the resources list at the end of the guide.

Resources1. Paint Specifications Bucket Paint for Surface Layer: Any high-quality concrete, garage, porch or floor enamel. A clear concrete sealer can be applied after the design is painted for maximum durability. Simple Green is a good option and available at Home Depot and online. Spray Paint for Stencils: Montana Chalk Series
2. Stencils A wide variety of companies offer stencil cutting, often using lasers on 2mm plastic. The stencil can be used many times over and is easy to work with. See www.customcutstencil.com as an example.
3. Design and Installation Services This design guide was created by Pipkin Creative (www.pipkincreative.com). If assistance is needed in mural installation or design creation please email [email protected]
