The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOOD WILLand BETTER FRIENDSHIP?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The Four-Way Test of things we think, say or do can be applied profitably in relations with others in home, community, business, national and international life; particularly to proposed legislation in government;

and to relations between teachers and students in schools.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

It is with a great deal of honor and pride that I serve as your District Governor in Rotary year 2011-12. Because of you, Rotary District 6820 will continue to make a difference in the lives of those in our communities and the world.

The Rotary Emblem exemplifies the motto, “Service Above Self” and is proudly worn by members throughout the world who believe in helping those less fortunate. Rotarians target health, hunger, water, and literacy issues as the key to a peaceful world and mutual understanding among the different cultures.

My Goals for our District will be focused on the areas of Membership, Foundation, Service Projects, and Public Relations.

I urge every Rotarian to make a pledge to introduce a new member in 2011-12. Each club has the responsibility to designate a Club Membership Committee chair that is involved in the recruiting, orientation, and retention of new members.

Every Rotary club will give to the Rotary Foundation. Every Rotarian is asked to give some amount to the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation is our charity. It is the cornerstone of Rotary International, we must support it.

Service to others extends from our district to the poorest country on earth, Malawi. Water wells are being dug thanks to the efforts and funding of several clubs and individuals in our district and funding by the Rotary Foundation. This will continue in 2011-12.

In our own backyard there is so much in the area of Community Service that we can do. Every club in 6820 should have a literacy service project such as “Between the Lions”, or a reading program at a local library, or a book drive, or a dictionary project, etc. Rotary should be the leader in the fight against illiteracy that plagues this state. I expect each club to complete a project in the area of Literacy.

We must promote the public image of Rotary. Each club will have a Public Relations Chair with the responsibility of keeping their local news media informed of club activities. Clubs are encouraged to use social media such as Facebook and club websites to communicate their Rotary news.

There are approximately 2350 members of 44 Rotary clubs in our District here in central Mississippi. If we all unite behind Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee’s Theme, “Reach Within and Embrace Humanity” our Service to others will make our communities and the world a better place.

Serving others…having fun.

DISTRICT 6820 GOALS • 2011-2012

1. Membership - Every club in our district will have a focused Member-ship Drive during Rotary Membership month. New Rotarians should immediately be given duties and responsibilities that will make them feel a part of the club.

2. Health, Hunger, Water - Financial support for the Malawi water proj-ect headed by Victor Smith and Bill Boykin will continue. Clubs and individual Rotarians will be encouraged to give their support as well.

3. Literacy - A major focus for our district. District Simplified Grants are available for clubs with new “Between the Lions” programs as well as for other literacy projects. Every club should be involved in this area in some manner.

4. Rotary Foundation - Foundation Giving Goals have been made by each club president. Every Rotarian in this district should give some-thing to our Foundation. Every club in this district should contribute the amount not given by the members to meet the club goal. Member Giving + Club Giving = Goal.

5. Presidential Citation - Each club president should make earning this award a priority. This year there is no minimum membership require-ment - it’s strictly a point system. Your club can receive this award “with distinction” if the club has had an exceptional year.

DISTRICT 6820 FOUNDATION

Our district foundation, currently known as the 6820 Foundation, was started during the 1940’s. Its general purpose is to provide financial support for district projects with a special emphasis on helping smaller clubs. The 6820 Foundation is governed by ten trustees, nine serving three-year staggered terms plus the current district governor. This foundation operates as an endowment with projects being supported only with income earned during the Rotary year preceding the current rotary year.

* Deceased Until 1956, the State of Mississippi was divided in two parts. The southern part was in the District with Louisiana to the south and west, and the northern part was in the District with Tennessee to the north. Past District Governors from current District 6820 who served the District in the north, shown above as District 6800, or the District in the south and west, shown above as District 6840, are also listed. On July 1, 1956, the current boundaries of District 6820 were established and we have had our own District Governors since then.
