To join, simply answer the phone call from us at the start of the meeting. Make sure our union has your updated phone number so we can reach you! CUHW providers join UDW, building power for IHSS providers and clients across California

Earlier this year, California United Homecare Workers (CUHW) merged with UDW to strengthen our voice as caregivers and help bring dignity and respect to the important work we do. IHSS providers in your county are now part of UDW – welcome!

UDW members gather in Sacramento to talk with legislators about protecting IHSS.

Stronger Together

“I have been working as an IHSS provider since 2008, taking care of my son and a woman who has severe limitations in her mobility. We all need to do our part to ensure quality care for our clients. With UDW we will be stronger, and members will have new opportunities to get involved in the fight to protect IHSS.”

“Anytime there is a cut to IHSS, it hurts all those involved. The extra money means more gas, food, clothing, and other necessities. Most providers are not wealthy and do this important job because they care for their clients. UDW’s recent victory in restoring the 7% that was cut from the IHSS budget was a major win for everyone because now many of our clients will have more hours of care and providers will have more money at the end of the month. Go to the monthly meetings. Talk to other providers. Get involved and find out how you can to your part.”

“About two years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, or MS. This came as a shock because I have been a caregiver for twenty years, providing care for my daughter, Lacy, who lives with Spina Bifida. During my rehabilitation treatment period, I became a recipient of homecare for the first time. Unexpected illnesses and tragedies that put us out of work can happen to anyone. If you have questions about how UDW can help, call the Member Benefits Center to get the answers you need.”

For 16 years, I have been an IHSS provider caring for my youngest daughter Ellis, who lives with chronic lung disease.

For many of us, dealing with the IHSS program can be daunting, and getting our questions answered is not always easy. But UDW is here to help.

to do when your client is hospitalized, have questions about medical and dental benefits, or want to know more about the issues facing IHSS providers, UDW can help you find what you need.

But that’s not all.

Each county has an Advocacy Council made up of UDW homecare providers who can help you get more hours of care for your clients and resolve conflicts with IHSS. There are many other benefits to being a UDW member:

Need help with IHSS? We are here for you!

Recently UDW helped San Diego provider Christine Nguyen win more IHSS hours for her client John. John’s hours were increased from 43 to 263 per month, and Christine was awarded nearly $30,000 in back pay!

Editha Adams

By uniting, providers ended a 7% cut to IHSS hours and are fighting for a pay raise

Homecare workers have proven time and again that by standing together and fighting back, we win. Recently, we have won several victories for homecare.

Ending a 7% cut to IHSS hoursOn July 1st, following a multi-year campaign by homecare workers and our allies, legislators restored our clients’ hours of care, temporarily ending cuts that had been in place since 2009. We continue to lobby lawmakers to ensure this cut is permanently ended.

Winning pay raises and more IHSS hours All across the state we’re building strength at the local level, too. In Butte County, the local UDW Advocacy Council recently helped a homecare provider to win 70 additional hours of paid care for her client, a military veteran who developed permanent disabilities as a result of combat. In addition, we are currently in contract negotiations in Butte and several other counties to win the pay raises that IHSS providers deserve!

Overtime pay In August, we came one step closer to finally securing overtime pay and other labor protections when a federal court ruled in favor of homecare workers. This case is expected to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. However, we are currently pressuring Governor Brown to move forward with implementing pay for overtime, wait time while at doctor’s appointments and travel time for IHSS providers.

We did it by standing together Our union unites thousands of homecare providers to make sure our voices are heard by lawmakers on the local level and in Sacramento. As we move forward, UDW members will continue to protect the IHSS program and advocate for the improvements IHSS providers and clients deserve.

At the same time, UDW fights for fairness for all. We know that homecare providers and our families cannot win justice as long as poverty wages, discrimination, and racism deny dignity to too many Americans.

I urge you to stand with us so that we can protect homecare and stand up for our communities! We look forward to working with you.

In unity,

Doug Moore, UDW Executive Director
