I hope each of you had a wonderful holiday season and that you are looking forward to
the new year. I cannot believe that the first half of the Lions year is nearly over as well
as my term as District Governor. It seems such as short while ago that I attended the
International Convention in Seattle and took the oath of office.. We have had an
enjoyable first half of the year and Ginny and I are looking forward to the many events
and activities of the upcoming months.
Over the remainder of the year, we have many challenges and opportunities facing us
as Lions, first and foremost as always is membership. Keeping your clubs active and
invigorated requires new members. As our International President Tam says, the Clubs
are the strength of our organization and their strength comes from the membership.
Seek out those prospects that you believe would make good quality members and ASK
them to join your Club.
A real opportunity presents itself every year and we seem to struggle to get Lions to
attend. This is the Regional Leadership Institute held annually at Emmitsburg, Md.
This class offers you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills that are helpful
not only in Lions but in business and your personal lives. Set aside the weekend of
February 17-19 and register today to attend the Insititute.
If you have been following the worldwide tree planting initiative, you are aware that
there have been over 6.6 million trees planted so far around the world. We have
several clubs that planning their tree planting projects and there will be information
provided to all the clubs about getting trees and participating in a tree planting project.
Remember, whether it is planting a few trees in your community park or participating
in a reforestation project where a few thousand trees are planted, the important thing is
to participate and promote what you are doing to help the environment.
We have reached the mid-point of the year and we still do not have a candidate for
District Governor or for second Vice District Governor. I know that we have several
qualified Lions who could step into either of these roles. If you have any interest in
pursuing either of these positions, I would like to talk to you. We need people to step
into these roles so please give it serious consideration. Step up now so you have the
time to plan your year and to get the qualified Lions to fill those Cabinet positions.
Remember President Tams theme of “I Believe” and have the courage, commitment
and willingness to take the necessary action to make this the best Lions year ever.

Dear District Governor Studley:
The Lions enjoy a proud tradition of helping people who suffer from disabilities. The purpose of this letter
is to request that the Lions embrace the programs of the Special Olympics as an opportunity to help people with
intellectual disabilities. I am asking for the financial sponsorship of District 22-B for my participation in the
Special Olympics Maryland Polar Bear Super Plunge.
The Super Plunge begins on January 27, 2012 as the eighty or so participants begin plunging into the
Chesapeake Bay once an hour for 24 hours at Sandy Point State Park. The following day the main event Polar
Plunge hosts thousands of people plunging to support Special Olympics Maryland. I must raise at least $10,000
in order to part of the Super Plunge team, and plunge for 24 hours.
Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD) provides athletic training and competitions for people who have
intellectual disabilities. The programs are highly successful and offer an opportunity for the athletes to gain
confidence and achievement that carries them toward more fulfilled lives. The SOMD has recently taken on a new
challenge, providing programs for students as part of their school activities. The public schools are now
required to offer such programs and the SOMD has stepped up to help the schools. This presents a large new
challenge for the SOMD and they very much need the help of citizens and organizations who seek to serve the
community.
My request comes with an offer and a promise. My promise is to hit the water each and every hour, and do
at least 24 plunges. My offer is to take on a task for the District that will serve the achievement of your
objectives as District Governor. I am also reaching out to several of the 22-B clubs for donations. I am very much
hoping that you can lend support for this effort by a donation from the District and encouraging the clubs to
donate. I am very willing to offer my labor in assistance at one of the fundraising events for any club that
donates at least $200 to my goal. I will also wear something you designate during one of my plunges into the
cold water.
By the way, I am also an unpaid member of the Special Olympics Maryland Board of Directors. In fact, I am the
only member who resides on the Eastern Shore and the only member who is a Lion. One of my objectives is to
bring even more Special Olympics services to the Eastern Shore, and I believe that is starting to happen.
You have some options for making a donation. You can go directly to a SOMD web location devoted to my
goal: http://plunge2012.kintera.org/ranger
If you do that, please identify the District as the donator so that appropriate thanks can be offered. Or you can
mail a check made out to Team Barton (address 11420 Cecil Court, Greensboro, Maryland 21639). Or you can
hand me a check whenever I come help you. Team Barton is an account set up to support my effort and will credit
your donation.
Without a doubt you receive many requests for funding. This request will help you support an event and an
organization that helps less fortunate people, and helps me bring more services to the communities of the Eastern
Shore. You will also gain some assistance from a fellow Lion.
Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely
Lion Rick Barton

SUPERPLUNGE
The Super-plunge is a prelude to the Polar Bear Plunge that includes one plunge into the Chesapeake Bay per hour for 24
hours. All the funds raised go directly to support Special Olympics.
Please reach into your heart to give something to help me help the special people who gain so much from these programs. Each of the "Superplungers" must raise at least $ 10,000, so every dollar helps.
To donate go to: http://plunge2012.kintera.org/ranger
OR you can make a check payable to Team Barton. Thank you!

Lady Ginny, will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at The Milestone, 9630 Technology Drive,

The Multiple District Convention Committee would like to extend a
personal invitation to each Lion, Lioness and Leo to attend the
MD22 Convention, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday May
9th
thru 12th
2012. We look forward to providing you with events that you
will enjoy, fellowship with Lions from across the Multiple, and good food
and entertainment. The committee's goal is to create a pleasant fun-filled
experience for everyone.
We reviewed all of your concerns from last year and are working very
diligently to correct, or at least create, a better situation. The
committee recently met with the management staff of the Wicomico
Youth and Civic Center to review concerns from last year and focus on
changes that will be more accommodating this year. Some changes
already agreed upon; convention registration will be on the main floor
just as you enter the Civic Center, Pre-convention entertainment,
business sessions, Necrology and the MD22 Banquet will be held in a
sound compatible room where everyone can hear and understand what's
going on. The exhibits and booths will be in the main arena (Normandy
Room). As for the Sub-District luncheon and meeting, each District will
have a separate room. The golf tournament is planned to be held at
Nutter's Crossing again this year. The committee has already put a
request in for a warm sunny day.

2011 Final Report
Leo Club of the Cecil County
School of Technology has had another
productive school year. Of the 46 students
originally signed up for the club, 39 mem-
bers were sworn in as LEO on the 3rd of
March 2011 with Lion Jack McGee and
Joe Nelson in attendance.
This year our team gathered over
$850 in profits this year. The membership
has decided to make charitable contribu-
tions to local agencies. Through a sugges-
tion from a student and LEO member, the
club decided to make this semester's main
contribution to the Human Services Devel-
opment Corporation. This is the main sup-
porting nonprofit for child abuse, crisis
intervention, and addiction counseling in
Cecil County. The students felt strongly
that we had to help charities close to home
this year in our contributions. The award
was given at the December 7th meeting.
Relay for life and the American Cancer Society held the annual walk at Elkton High School and
LEO's were in attendance. The members raised over $360.00 for a cure for cancer. This has been a year-
ly fundraiser for our club and we look forward to next year.
St Patrick Day costume jewelry was sold as a fundraiser during school hours and was a small but
productive fundraiser last spring. We have remaining product to be sold next year.
The LEO club sold Wolfgang chocolate candy as a fundraiser this fall. Orders were taken until
October 26 and a profit of over $400 were made. This has been an ongoing marketing tool for our club
and we received more participation this year for a better profit.
LEO's provided hostesses for open house and showed great support for the School of Technology
and represented the Lions well during the community event.
This year's members also participated in the Coats for Kids campaign held by the school. This
event collects outerwear that is no longer needed and distributes it to families less fortunate in our com-
munity.
A Chili's Give Back Night is a fundraiser where Chili's "gives back" to not-for-profit organiza-
tions. The fundraising event takes place at the local Chili's restaurant in Elkton and has been our most
productive fundraiser to date. The membership would like to thank everyone who attended and helped
our cause.
The 2011 LEO club of the School of Technology would like to give special thanks to our sponsor
Lions for the donation to our sign. You provided essential funds for us to complete construction and give
our school sign a beautiful facelift. Thank you again for all your help.

Dear Community Partner:
Thank you for your donation of $400.00. During this uncertain economy every contribution to
the Help Center is vitally important to our program. You enable us to continue to help many people
in a variety of areas.
During Fiscal Year 2011, we assisted over 70,000 people with food and clothing, homeless-
ness prevention, energy assistance, financial, and emergency needs. During the Holiday season,
455 individuals were assisted with food baskets and/or gifts.
Requests for help have continued to grow. We have experienced increased need in the areas
of food, clothing, housing costs, and energy assistance. We strive to keep up with the demand and
fortunately, through your generosity, we are able to assist many of those that seek help.-
Once again, we thank you for your donation. Please be assured that we do not provide donor
names/address to any individuals or organizations. We appreciate your commitment to assisting
individuals and families from all walks of life. It means a great deal to us, and especially to those
in need!
Sincerely,
Diana L. Morgan-Klusak

Diabetes Corner: Are there benefits to eating 4 or 5 small meals during the day instead of 3 large meals? Yes!
Scientists have been looking for the ideal frequency of meals since the beginning of diabetes research.
There are many benefits to eating small amounts of food over the course of the day instead of larger
amounts at mealtimes. These benefits include decreased blood glucose levels after a meal, reduced insu-
lin requirements over the course of the day, and decreased blood cholesterol levels. These benefits prob-
ably stem from a slow, continuous absorption of food from your gut, which spares your body the work of
switching over to a "fasting" state. Also, eating several small meals a day may decrease your hunger and
reduce the number of calories you eat during the day. Finally, there are diabetes medications available,
such as acarbose that slow the absorption of food and have much the same effect as eating your food
slowly over the course of the day. The practice of nibbling is not for everyone; but if it helps you main-
tain good blood glucose control and a desirable body weight when doing it.

Leader Dog for the Blind
March 2012 The annual 22-B Leader Dog Dinners will be held on March 23, 2012 in Galena and March 24, 2012
in Sharptown. Times and costs will be forthcoming. Mark your calendars, plan to attend and bring
several Lions and other friends with you. It is never too early to plan for such an event.
Speaker Len Quinn and Ginger
Len was born in Milwaukee. After graduating from Milwaukee Boys
Tech , he joined the Army. Following his discharge from the army, he
worked for a large steel stamping company in Milwaukee. He started as
a floor sweeper, and then worked his way up to plant manager supervis-
ing 300 employees. Over the next 26 years in the stamping business, he
worked at companies in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. For many years
Len was involved in Community Theatre, acting in comedic plays.
In 1973 Len bought a restaurant in Redgranite, WI and joined his first
Lions Club. Over the next 14 years, he worked in the restaurant business,
including managing 3 different country clubs before returning to the
stamping business.
He started to lose his sight in 1994, becoming legally blind in 1998. His life completely changed
in 2001 when he attended Leader Dogs for the Blind and received his first Leader Dog, Mikey, a yellow
Labrador . He was asked that same year to speak to the Ripon Lioness Club about his Leader dog and
the programs the school offered Since that time, he has done over 700 presentations to various schools,
social clubs, senior centers, Lions Clubs throughout the United States and Canada. He is now traveling
as an Official Leader Dog Graduate Field Representative and serves on several committees at his
church. Still, with some help, Len does charity auctions to raise money for children.
Mikey was retired on June 4, 2007. Mikey’s last act as Len’s Leader Dog was to guide him to the
plane as he came to Leader Dog to get his successor dog whose name is Ginger. She is a Golden Re-
triever.
He is Past President of the Ripon Lions Club, the club responsible for convincing him that he
should have a Leader Dog. In June 2007 he received the Birch Sturm Fellow award. This is the highest
Lions award given in the state of Wisconsin. Len served as District Governor for 27B1 in 2009-2010.
Len has six children and nine grandchildren. In May of 2009 , he was married to Kay Zinecker,
who became a Lion and his partner in service.
He is thrilled to be speaking at conventions and encourages Lions, Lionesses, and Leos to stop at
his booth and to meet Leader Dog Ginger.

PRESIDENT ASHLEY’S MESSAGE
Iam so glad so many members and their spouses were able to attend our Christmas Party at the Captains
Table restaurant. I had a great time, the food was great, the games were fun, although I think Anne Thompson
had a harder time this year collecting candy canes, everyone was on to her, then Dave Moquin tricking
everyone into singing,” We Wish You A Merry Christmas”, that was brilliant. Kathy Hayman seemed a
little surprised when she went to check on her hidden reindeer and they had moved. You never know what is
going to happen when you aren't looking. Thank you Lioness Karen Bradshaw with the help of Kathy Hayman
and Brenda Simmons you did a great job planning our party.
We had a great turnout for the WCDC Christmas Concert and Luncheon at the Dunes Manor; I think we
had about 20 Lioness there. The clients did a great job with their concert; June Todd is amazing with them.
Santa came down the elevator with his elf and the clients were so excited to see them and receive the gifts you
all provided for them. This is truly an amazing event, if you haven't been, please try to make it next year as it will
warm your heart. Thank you June Todd and Donna Greenwood for making this so special!
Almost everyone received their Lioness shirt if they ordered one; I know they ran big so you will have one
chance to replace it with a smaller size if needed. Please bring it to the January meeting if we do not have
your size we will order you a new one, no charge, to be received at the February meeting. If you did not pur-
chase one, you can at the meeting; the cost will be $16 (I forgot to add tax the first time). The shirts are amazing
and I would suggest if you didn't purchase one that you do. You know that you don't want to be the only one not
wearing one! : )
Lions District 22B Governor will be coming with some members of his cabinet for his official visit. Please take a
moment to say hello and make them feel welcome. We will also be installing our three new members, Tina Sand-
ers, Lynn Reich and Karen Hammond; this will make them "official" although they all have been very active in
the community with our club for the last three months.
Lioness Kris Barron has told me our club is doing great visiting other clubs. Keep up the good work and make
sure you bring back so great ideas to share with us. Everyone I talk to who has been on a visitation has really en-
joyed it, and wants to go again. It really is a great way to see how other clubs run and come back with fresh ideas.
Don't forget to wear your new Ocean City Lioness Shirt when you go!
I will not be at the January meeting, but will be thinking of you while lying in the sun drinking cocktails. HAHA!
I know Lioness Darlene will do a great job running the meeting, please give her your support... a few drinks may
not hurt either. : )
Look forward to seeing you all in February. Happy Holidays!

OCEAN CITY LIONESS (continued)
HAITIAN TRIP
Lioness Club Friends,
Your generous donation of medicines and nutritious snacks was so appreciated by the people of
Haiti. I wish you could have seen the delight in the eyes of the children as we gave them the snacks. One
little toddler was so malnourished so we gave her a supply of baby crackers and dried fruit to last awhile.
The over the counter medicines were distributed by the Methodist Church to a nearby tent city.
Our mission site was near the small town of Arcahaie. We lived with the Haitian people in a com-
pound near the Methodist church. Each morning we would walk down the road to our work site
attracting children as we went. Some of our team worked on construction of the new kitchen, septic
system and storage depot with the Haitian workers that we hired while some did crafts, games and songs
with children from age six months to sixteen years of age. What an amazing experience! We hope we
made a difference in the lives of these wonderfully resilient people. It has had a special influence on our
lives and we know how blessed we are to live in the USA. Bill and I thank you so much for all the
support you gave for our trip.

Dear Community Partner:
Thank you for selecting the Cecil County Help Center for your generous donation of shoes. The holidays
are a difficult time for many families. Your generous donation allows us to operate our Holiday Programs. During
the 2010 holiday season, we were able to provide holiday assistance to 254 households (561 adults/children).
The Help Center is a partnership between County and State Governments which supplies resources for our
overhead expenses. However, it is the generosity of the community, schools, businesses, churches, individuals, as
well as civic and service organizations that supply us with the resources (food, financial aid and in-hind goods and
services) to assist residents of Cecil County in a crisis. Last year, eighty-nine (89) volunteers gave 1,766 hours to
make the Holiday Program a tremendous success!
We thank you for your donation and we hope that you will remember us with your contributions on an on-
going basis. Without this valuable support, we wouldn't be able to help those in need. Thank you for caring and
thinking of us!
Sincerely, Diana L Morgan-Klusah Asst. Director — County Programs

The Lions’ motto is “We Serve;” and for many decades since the Perryville Club was established
in 1944, the Perryville Lions have been serving the Perryville community. This is especially true at
Christmas time when the Club distributes food and fruit baskets to those families in need. On
December 19th, with the monetary assistance of the Perryville American Legion Post 135 and other
benefactors, the Perryville Lions distributed a total of 21 Christmas food baskets to the local elementary
schools (Perryville, Bainbridge, and Charlestown), and to the Charlestown Methodist Church. The
schools and church contacted those families in need in their areas to pick up the food baskets. Each
family received a ham, dairy and bakery products, fresh produce, canned goods, and more. Also, the
Perryville Lions distributed 21 Christmas fruit baskets to the elderly at Perry Villa Apartments. The
food and fruit baskets were purchased at the Perryville Food Lion grocery store.
Deal Island-Chance Lions club On December 8th and 9th the Deal Island Chance Lions held a Christmas show at the Deal Island
School. We made near to $3000 clear on admission, food, silent auction, 50/50s etc. Vicky Ford set
everything up including decorating a lovely stage, and it was amazing how many great amateur voices
we have in the area. Santa Claus made his appearance as usual, and King Lion Roy Ford warned him to
take care of his reindeer when he left. It was a homey and warming celebration of the lord's birthday.

Ridgely Lions Receive Gift from MD Environmental Service Over the past couple of years the Ridgely Lions Club has formed partnership and working rela-
tionship with the MD Environmental Service (MES). MES is the operator of the Mid-Shore Regional
Landfill located in Ridgely, MD. In 2008 the Lions Club invited MES to attend one of our club meet-
ings and let us know how the new landfill would impact our community. The MES staff informed us
that the landfill will be operating in Ridgely for the next 20 years and that MES wanted to be active and
visible in the community. So the first thing we did was invite the staff to become members of the
Ridgely Lions Club. Since then one MES staff member, Chris Nash has joined the Lions Club. Thanks
Lion Chris.
One of the first community activities sponsored by MES was a golf tournament. Since 2009 MES
has sponsored their golf tournament at the Caroline Country Club with proceeds donated to the Ridgely
Lions Club to help fund our student scholarship program. The Lions assist MES with the event by
sponsoring a hole, entering two teams in the tournament and monitoring the hole–in-one contest. In
2012 we hope to co-sponsor the event with MES. We will challenge other Lions clubs to participate and
give a trophy and prize to the best Lions foursome.
In October 2011 when MES VP Steve Tomczewski attended our club meeting to present the third
annual golf tournament check ($2250.00 for 2011) he heard that we were starting a fundraiser (citrus
fruit sale) to buy a Lions mascot costume. Mr. Tomczewski made note of our new project. MES also
supports the Ridgely Lions Club by participating in the Strawberry Festival and Christmas Parades.
MES also sponsored the dash plaques for the ridgely Lions club Strawberry Festival Parade.
During the Annual Ridgely Christmas parade MES entered a float decorated for the season and
occupied by MES staff, Santa Claus, and a Lion. Little did we know that MES had purchased a Lion
mascot costume to donate to the Ridgely Lions Club? On Monday December 12th at our regularly
schedule club meeting, Mr. Dave Czawlytko, MES representative presented an early Christmas present
to King Lion Ed Miller on behalf of the club. Inside the package was a brand new Lions mascot
costume. King Lion Ed expressed our thanks to MES for their donation and support of the Ridgely
Lions Club.
The club plans on using the costume to promote Lions International programs and initiatives on a
national, multiple district, and district and club level. We are also thinking about sponsoring a contest on
the local level to name the new Ridgely Lions Mascot.
