JUNE, 2016
Greetings District 19-IWith the dawn of June, our year has 30 days remaining. When I started the year I had to ask the question “What have I done?”
Looking back now that answer is I have made many new Lion friends and Joanne and my Lion family has gotten a lot bigger. At the Council of Governors last week I stated each Club is unique in their own way as each Lion in District I is unique as well. Each Club in the District has their way that they help their community and that is what makes District I the Incredible District it is.
On May 23rd I finished my official visits to the Clubs in the District with my visit to Quil-cene Lions and once again Joanne and I were welcomed into the Club and treated to a fantas-tic night. On May 21st while in Zone One we completed the Club Officer Training for the year and again it was received very well with positive comments from those who attended. The final book used for training will be forwarded to all Clubs in the near future so all Lions in the District have the same book.
May 26th to 28th saw all our Elected District Officers attend their training in Yakima WA and this year it was a strange feeling to have to leave next year’s team to undergo their train-ing without being there to help out but now we have given them the knowledge we had to give and now must step back and let them lead but we must be ready to answer question that might arise throughout the year.
Joanne and I would like to thank each and every Lion in the District for the Friendship you all extended to us as we visited your Clubs and those events that we attended where our paths crossed again. For those of you who traveled with us we had a great time with you and the stories we passed to each other will be remembered always. From the trip though the snowstorm to Tahsis, the late night ferry rides to all of the Islands, the border crossing to the Olympic Peninsula and the long scenic drive to the north end of Vancouver Island, we have many cherished memories we will talk about for many years to come.
Frank Sinatra sang “I did it my way”. Thanks District 19-I ... “We did it our way” from Club visits to charter nights to the fantastic Spring Conference and even the monthly membership reports. District I is incredible and Joanne and I will always remember this year.
Thank you for all you have done this year and let’s keep up the great work and finish the year on an all time high.
Till we meet again. Thank you for all you do.

TAHSIS LIONS CLUB By Lion Maureen Roth, Secretary
The Tahsis Lions Club donated money to the Alberta Wild-fire victims in Fort McMurray. Were you able to too?
On the July 16 weekend this year, we will once again be in-volved with Tahsis Days and are inviting you to join in our fun.
We will be doing the BBQ on Saturday and are looking for-ward to DG Brian, ZC Cec and their significant others helping out. As something new for Tahsis Days we are planning on having Bingo on Friday evening, so are going to be busy that weekend.
Dear Lions, I recently spent time in Sri Lanka, a small country that has five Lions eye hospitals serving a population of over 21 million people.
LCIF has helped fund all five eye hospitals.
I was very impressed with the facilities, their level of care and the active involvement of the local Lions. On a recent trip through the United States, I visited a fan-tastic Lions KidSight USA program in Iowa.
KidSight USA is a national coalition that brings together Lions vision-screening programs for young children.
Last year, Iowa KidSight screened more than 46,000 chil-dren, ranging in age from six months to six years.
Five percent of those children needed to see an eye doctor. That means 2,300 children might still be living with visual impairments if not for KidSight USA!
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) supports the screening programs through grant funding. Good things happen when we work together, and I am so proud of the work that Lions do to improve the lives of peo-ple in their communities and around the world.
Remember, it is only through your generosity that we are able to improve the lives of millions every year.
As we approach the end of the fiscal year, please consider making a donation so that LCIF can reach its fundraising goal and continue changing lives. Together in Service,Joe PrestonChairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

SOOKE HARBOURSIDE LIONSDuck Day At The Flats
On May 7th we celebrated with the families of Sooke! The focal point was the Duck Race in the River and even though ithe race had to be
restarted due to a change in the wind and the tide, it still happened and five lucky winners were awarded $. For the first time ever, all 2,500 Duck Race Tickets had been sold.
Meantime the children of Sooke had the chance to gain stamps in their passport booklets and turn those into free prizes from the prize tables.
Everyone had fun. We ran out of food but not out of prizes! We had lots!A very successful moneyraiser for our charities.
Hand painted signs were at
each game station.

SIDNEY LIONS By Lion Stan Yaxley
The Sidney Lions have been very busy for the month of May.
For our meeting in May, we had four guests show up as possible members, and will be sure to follow up with them.
Our yearly Bike Roadeo, supporting youth from Kindergar-ten to Grade 2, with the support of the local RCMP.
ICBC donated bike helmets to those students who did not have one, or their helmets were in bad shape.
Our “Lunchbox” has been out on two venues so far this year.
One venue: North Saanich Expo supporting P.E.M.O. (Pen-insula Emergency Measures Organization). Lots of emergency vehicles were displayed to the public; we were the food venue.
Second venue: Braefoot Community Association 30-year celebration. This Association was very helpful to Sidney Lions in getting our new Lunchbox. We served hot dogs, hamburg-ers, chips and water. The association provided the food for us, and “we served,” it.

GALIANO LIONS
Fiesta By Lion Barry New
539-2364 or [email protected]
Mark your calendars for this year’s Lions Fiesta! It will be Sat-urday July 30th at the Lions Field on Burrill Rd. It’s an impressive gathering of the best of Galiano. It takes a lot of people to make the event the success it has been.
The Parade every year starts from outside the Galiano Garage. The Parade begins after the morning ferry leaves. The honour of being Parade Marshall is given to someone who has made life-long contribution to the island. Any and all organizations are encouraged to bring something to the Parade. There is always a good collection of Classic Cars, Costumes, and our First Re-sponders with Fire Trucks and Ambulance.
On the field the stallholders show some very fine examples of island crafts, the charitable and Non-Profit organisations display for us their work on Galiano and also the Fire and Emergency services have interesting displays.
Concurrent to the Fiesta is the Thrift Shop, Museum in Di’s Cottage, and the Saturday Market.
There are lots of games for the kids with generous prizes. Kids races happen later and the popular Boot Toss runs throughout the afternoon.
The Road Kill Cafe has food donated by local businesses. Every-thing else you want is there on the field such as fresh Corn on the Cob, Candy Floss, Hotdogs, Pies and an Ice-Cream vendor.
Music has become a major part of the day. Some of the best of a variety of local musicians. The Beer Garden and Bingo happen in the hall through the day.
I am always impressed by the effort of so many people to make it such a wonderful event. The Galiano Lions Club is always look-ing for new members. It is a few hardworking people giving their time for this and other island events and volunteers are always welcome.

This photo is of all the strawberry shortcakes laid out on the island of the old kitchen in the last issue. Below is a photo of the new island in the renovated kitchen. Do you think all those plates of shortcake are going to fit? Stay tuned and we’ll let you know!
The hall will be open on June 24th, 25th, and 26th during the weekend of the Chainsaw Carving competition. We will be renting tables to crafters and raising funds with our concession and our lemonade stand. Below shows Kirk and Tom hard at work last year!
WE INVITE YOU ALL TO COME AND CHECK OUTthe carvings, and then

On June 18 the Mill Bay Lions, along with the Malahat Legion, are hosting the Walter Hall Memorial Family Fishing Derby.
We will be cooking burgers and hotdogs.
Canada Day on July 1 we will be hosting a pancake breakfast serving pancakes and sausages, with juice and coffee.

If you enjoy meeting new people and having fun...be a VOLUNTEER COUNSELLOR at the46th Annual Operation Trackshoes
June 10-12 at the University of Victoria
Operation Trackshoes is a weekend-long provincial sports festival for people with
developmental disabilities.
The festival includes a full-length competitive track and field meet, events for people in wheelchairs, and many fun
and recreational events as well. We offer a wide range of activities appropriate for people of all levels of ability and
ages. The key component of Operation Trackshoes is building relationships between people with or without
developmental disabilities. As a volunteer counsellor you will be matched with
competitors to provide support, assistance and friendship throughout the weekend (this is similar to the
camp counsellor concept). Some of the sporting activities are open to counsellors as
well as competitors, and everyone participates in the leisure and social activities together. We welcome people with no
prior experience but who have a sincere desire and a strong commitment to be a part of Operation Trackshoes.
We also require people with specialized skills in areas such as behavior management, nursing, personal care and
alternate communication systems.
If you would like someone from the Counsellor Recruitment Committee to provide
you with more information, or to give you a presentation about Operation Trackshoes, please leave us a message at
We believe you will find this volunteer opportunity to be truly the experience of a lifetime.
With your help, we will make Operation Trackshoes 2016
the best weekend ever!
(How important is this? In 2015, due to a LACK of VOLUNTEERS, there were 70 people waiting
who were not able to participate, including people from Port Alice, Port McNeill and Port Hardy!)

On the May long weekend we were cooking pancakes and sausages for the Sailing Club!
It was their Sail Around Salt Spring Island event.
It was fun and the people were happy and it was great we could do this for them.
It ran like clockwork with the setup/ cooking and takedown, and we hadonly positive comments coming our way.
A fun sunny day enjoyed by all!

Welch Allyn SPOT ScreenerBy Lion Chris Morrison, 250-758 8188
Someone, somewhere, once said “From tiny acorns mighty Oaks do grow.”
So, I believe, can grow the District 19-I “Your Vision is Our Vision” project.
Begun in the picturesque Alberni Valley Lions Club with the simplest concept of doing what Lions do best WE SERVE, it moved forward with a chance encounter between PZC BettyAnne Herbert, of Nanaimo Lions Club and a member of School District 68 Board, Al-berni Valley Lion Ron Jergenson, myself Chris Mor-rison Nanaimo Lions, with other Lions Rose Sarkany, Bob Cavill, Ruth Bruce, from Central Island Clubs who were invited to attend a school board meeting. Jorgen-son, very much restricted by time, gave an informative and spirited address expounding the virtue of our new-ly acquired Welch Allyn SPOT Screener.
The board moved quickly, bypassing some procedur-al steps, implementation was brought to the agenda as `New Business`. Once the screener was licensed for use in Canada, training began. With Jergenson, and fellow Lion Rob Dalton, assisted by members of Welch Allyn staff, 30 Island club members underwent train-ing at the Lions Club in Parksville.
Clubs within District 19-I, Zone 7 quickly banded together, with the promised support of Lions Club In-ternational Foundation. Sufficient funds were raised to purchase five screeners. Coming under the mentorship of ZC Mike Orrick and DG Brian Phillips the project began attaining momentum.
Nanaimo Lions Club is now in close contact with the Vice Principal of Learning for School District (SD68) who has been instrumental in us gaining access to the schools, after agreeing to screen grades 4 & 7, and a protocol covering safety, privacy, and confidentiality.
Lions, as Knights of the Blind, are acutely aware of how vision issues can affect an individual moving through our school system into adolescence and adult-hood. It has been shown through International studies that, simply put, `Your Vision is Our Vision` has the ability to change lives.
Some facts regarding poor vision and its consequences:
Expert opinions have found 80% of learning comes through the visual processing of information.
Approximately 25% of schoolchildren have vision problems.
In disadvantaged areas, grades 5 – 8 and behaviorally at risk children ages 8 to 18, up to 85% can have vision problems.
Better vision care means a more literate and pro-ductive workforce. It is estimated a 1% rise in literacy scores translates into a 2.5% relative rise in productiv-ity. (Zaba JN Children’s Vision Care In The 21st Centu-ry)
Lions International has been at the forefront of the fight against vision loss in numerous countries. With this screener a new weapon has been added to the Canadian Lions campaign. A project begun here on Vancouver Island, headed by Alberni Valley, taken up by Nanaimo Lions Club of Zone 7.
Our Club members are incredibly proud to have been the First of the First, (as far as we are aware) any-where in Canada, using the Welch Allyn SPOT Screen-er, on February 5th 2016 in a Nanaimo School, screen-ing grades 4 & 7 students for vision issues, including Myopia (nearsightedness) Hyperopia (farsightedness) Astigmatism (blurred vision) Anisometropia (unequal refractive power) Strabismus (eye misalignment) and Anisocoria (unequal pupil size).
Screening results so far in the 15 of 28 schools in SD68 shows the following:
Total students screened: 778.Students referred for further investigation: 65. Adults screened 69, referred 3.
OUR HOPE: That this project, beginning as a small acorn in
District 19-I, will flourish beyond Vancouver Island. We ask Lions Clubs across Canada to take up our call to arms. The roots established in the Alberni Valley & Nanaimo of Zone 7 can flourish, and the branches of this mighty oak can shade the nation.

Lion Rose, who designed it is willing, if asked,
to work with Clubs to help personalize
their own brochure.

Why Men are HappierNICKNAMES
If Laura, Kate and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Laura, Kate and
Sarah. If Mike, Dave and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as
Fat Boy, Bubba and Wildman.
EATING OUT When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave and John
will each throw in $20, even though it’s only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually
admit they want change back. When the girls get their bill, out come the
pocket calculators...YEP!!!
MONEY A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs.
A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn’t need but it’s on sale.
BATHROOMS A man has six items in his bathroom:
toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel.
The average number of items in the typical woman’s bathroom is 337.
A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items.
ARGUMENTS A woman has the last word
in any argument. Anything a man says after that
is the beginning of a new argument.
FUTURE A woman worries about the future
until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future
until he gets a wife.
MARRIAGE A woman marries a man expecting he will
change, but he doesn’t. A man marries a woman expecting that she
won’t change, but she does.
DRESSING UP A woman will dress up to go shopping,
water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book,
and get the mail. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals.
NATURAL Men wake up as good-looking
as they went to bed. Women believe their bodies deteriorate during the night.
OFFSPRING Ah, children. A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appoint-ments and romances, best friends, favourite
foods, secret fears, hopes and dreams. A man is vaguely aware of some short
people living in the house.
