What kind of media institution

might distribute your media

product and why?

By Dominika Tkacova

The genre of my film is Psychological

Thriller. I am going to be looking at other

Psychological Thrillers, which I have

analyzed in my preliminary task, to find out

what kind of media institution might

distribute my product.

The media institution that distributes Inception is

mainly Warner Bros. They distribute the product both

theatrically and on DVD. There are other distributors who distribute the product

in some countries. For example, Film1 distributes the film in Netherlands but

this is only limited.

Side Effects, compared to Inception, has many different

distributors for different countries. In the UK, the media institutions that distribute it on DVD are Entertainment One and

Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Tanweer Films

distributes the film in many Asian countries, both theatrically

and on DVD.

Black Swan is distributed by Fox Searchlight. Darren

Aronofsky’s other film called ‘The Wrestler’ was also distributed by the same media institution. Black

Swan only has one distributor which is different

to the other films I have looked at.

I think my media product would ideally be distributed by Entertainment One like the film ‘Side Effects’. This media distributor is not as big as Warner Bros but it is still a very successful distributor. Entertainment One distributes in United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand and that is mainly where we want our product to be distributed to. I don’t believe that our product would be worldwide because it is not as professional as ‘Inception’ or other very successful film so I think Entertainment One is a more realistic idea.

So what media institution would ideally distribute my product?

How would I actually distribute my product?

Realistically, I would have to distribute my product on YouTube. It is unlikely a successful company would distribute my product due to their lack of support for indie film makers. Through YouTube, I could distribute my product free of cost and make money by becoming a YouTube partner if my movie is popular enough. It would be hard to get people to watch my film at first, but by sharing my movie on social media websites (such as Twitter and Facebook) I could get the attention from a niche market. I could create a fan base for my movie and then my movie could be distributed by a media institution.
