Distributed Acoustic Sensing Systems (DAS) Market 2014-2024: Fibre Optics for Oil & Gas, Utility, Military, Infrastructure & Security Applications

Republic of Korean spending in the DAS market is likely to account for 1.0% of the cumulative

spending total between 2014 and 2024, with an overall $137.6m being spent on the market by the

country. The Critical Infrastructure submarket is initially set to receive the greatest proportion of

these resources, although funding for Security and Military submarkets will also remain

consistently high towards 2024.

Table 5.29, along with Figures 5.61 and 5.62, show the Republic of Korea DAS market forecast in

terms of sales ($m), annual growth rates (AGR%), and compound annual growth rates (CAGR), in

addition to figures 5.63 and 5.64, which display submarket breakdowns. Table 5.30 below also

provides a summary of the drivers and restraints of the Republic of Korea DAS market.

Distributed Acoustic Sensing Systems (DAS) Market 2014-2024: Fibre Optics for Oil & Gas, Utility, Military, Infrastructure & Security Applications

Philippe Legrand: We manufacture our own fibre and our own fibre optic gauges; we also have

the highest resolution electronic gauges in the industry. We supply a fully integrated solution and

are not limited by having to place our monitoring with a third party completion. In short, our

monitoring is an integral part of the completion.

7.1.2 Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing Solutions for Reservoir Monitoring Visiongain: What regions of the world are the biggest users of distributed fibre optic sensing for

enhancing reservoir performance?

Philippe Legrand: The USA and Canada are the biggest users.

Visiongain: What is your view of the potential for using DAS in permanent reservoir monitoring

(PRM)?

Philippe Legrand: DTS and DAS are complementary. The big interest in DAS is to physically

listen to the completion noise (valves shifting, ESP bearings) and flow (inflow/outflow) of the

completion. Lots of companies are working on going to the quantification of what information is

contained in the DAS traces, versus pointing to “fluids/bubbles” entry or exit alongside the

completion.

7.1.3 DTS and DAS as Complementary Technologies Visiongain: What type of distributed fibre optic sensing solution will experience the strongest

uptake going forward: DTS or DAS? Why?

Philippe Legrand: I think that both are complementary. Both can be deployed on the same fibre

by alternating the interrogators (DTS or DAS), or interrogating at different frequencies. Fibres being

125 microns (to put it in perspective, 125 micron is about the width of a human hair), each sensing

technique will have its own dedicated fibre in the fibre optic down hole cable to take simultaneous

data and simplify interrogator management. The “winner” will be decided on ability to detect

features at depth.

Visiongain: What are the advantages of DAS over DTS for reservoir monitoring? Is it an either/or

matter, or do you think there is potential to do both within a well monitoring exercise?

Philippe Legrand: Both are distributed, and monitor the well from wellhead to toe: one focuses on

acoustics, one on temperature due to the intrinsic interrogation technique. From the data, the

Operator)

An oil & gas operator in the North Sea contracted Baker Hughes to install a complex, fibre-enabled intelligent well completion with the ability to monitor pressure/temperature (P/T) data and view the acid distribution profile for each zone during treatment. Before installing the five-zone lateral completion, Baker Hughes performed distributed temperature sensing (DTS) simulations and flow profiling to predict and later assess the effectiveness of a bull-headed, multi-zone acid stimulation.

SureVIEW™ DTS

October 2011 U.S.

An Oil & Gas operator contracted Baker Hughes to monitor separate frac events in multiple zones of the Bakken Shale, and to continue monitoring the zones during production. Throughout the contract Baker Hughes supplied the use of its FracPoint™ multistage fracturing system, SureSENS™ PT gauges, and SureView™ DTS monitoring system.
