W e certainly have experienced an

interesting summer here on the

some summer. We are all very concerned

about those more directly effected by the

among others. One

cannot help but

think about how to

plan for such an

event closer to

The fires have forced me to spend time

indoors which has led to more time to

join the BGS Writers Group. If

you have missed prior meetings,

it’s okay. You can join the group

anytime; everyone is welcome.

4th Tuesday of the Month

2:00–3:30 p.m.

Location: Barnes & Noble Cafe

We had such fun at Barnes & Noble in August read-

ing stories about the eclipse that we decided to go

back to Barnes & Noble in September.

Topics to write about are preselected. When you

read your story at the group, suggestions for im-

provement may be offered in gentle, supportive

ways. Sally Brown makes the group fun and helpful

at the same time! 2017 Writers Group dates/topics:

1. Sep. 26, 2017— Choose a photo & write some-

thing about it (or a topic of your choice).

2. Oct. 24, 2017 — Write something about “meal

time” (or a topic of your choice).

3. Nov. 28, 2017 — topic to be announced

4. December — NO Writers Group

BGS Library News The Library is open again after the

August closure due to the eclipse

and end of summer vacations of

our dedicated library volunteers. It turned out to be

a good decision, since the heavy, heavy smoke in

Bend made getting out difficult for many. We are

back to our normal operating hours.

Tues. & Wed. 1:30 – 5:00 p.m.

Thursday 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

The Library has over 2,600 books and journals to

help you with your research. One of our summer

projects was to put lists of the items in our collec-

tion online on the BGS website (Click here to see the

lists). There is an alphabetical list of Titles, so you

can look for a specific book. And there are lists of

items by Category, so you can see what we have for

Ohio, for example. Review the collection at home to

decide what you want to look at, when you come to

the Library.

And remember, members can check out most items

from the Library for a period of two weeks.

Maybe you’d like to be a volunteer Librarian. Just

send BGS an email to let us know!

Family-Inspired Fiction: How to Use Family History & Documents to Create Stories Presentation by

2017—2018

T he advice often given to

writers is “write what

you know.” What we usually

know best is (1) ourselves

and (2) our families, thus

the popularity of books that

are “tell-alls,” memoirs, or

family dramas.

Ginger, long-time Bend resi-

dent, was fortunate to have

a treasure-trove of infor-

mation about her great

grandmother dropped in

her lap. A relative made copies of the 90-year-old

woman’s hand-written autobiography and mailed

them to everyone in the family. Decades later Ginger

incorporated details from those 148 pages in her 2nd

published novel, “Never Done.”

On September 19, Ginger will discuss and show exam-

ples of how documents, such as a memoir, provide

writers with facts and inspiration that can lead to

memorable stories. Autobiographies, diaries, or jour-

nals are treasure maps, but other family documents

also contain information that can feed a writer’s im-

agination. She thinks some of them will surprise you.

Ginger waited until she retired to begin writing in

earnest. She has published two novels and written

many short stories, essays, and poems.

Come on September 19 and learn how Ginger put the

story together for “Never Done.” Bring your questions

about writing and publishing, and enjoy a cup of

coffee with your genealogy friends.

B GS lost two of its wonderful members over the

summer. We are honored to remember them and

to be able to have called them friends.

Adele Loudermilk – June 30, 1919 – July 22, 2017

All last year we celebrated the 25th program year of the Bend Genealogical

Society. Its 25th birthday is in January 2018. We owe our organization to Ade-

le’s determination and foresight. It was her dream, and she made it happen.

Widowed at 31 years old, Adele moved from

Southern California to Bend in 1988 to be near

her youngest son. Eventually her daughter moved

to Bend as well. An avid genealogist, she joined

the small genealogy group at the Deschutes His-

torical Society. She brought her expertise, enthu-

siasm and dreams to the group as its President.

The first meeting of the group at the Museum as

the Bend Genealogical Society was in January

1993. Since then, the Society built up the library

holdings, moved to Williamson Hall and into the

computer age. Thank you to Adele! Her life was

well-lived as a beloved Christian wife, mother, friend and for us, a genealogist.

Bob Deane – October 28, 1951 – July 10, 2017

We lost a good friend and colleague this summer with the passing of

our Vice-President Bob Deane. Since he first got involved with BGS, he

served our organization in all the ways that he could. Bob served as

member of the Nominating Committee and then as Vice President for

the past three years. He also became our go-to person about all things

DNA. He was generous and willingly stepped up when needed. His

presence and support will be greatly missed.

Bob worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 32 years prior to his retire-

ment in 2010. From his many presentations and stories, we know that

he had been an avid genealogist for some time. He also was very in-

volved with Habitat for Humanity. He will be sorely missed by his

wife, Norma, his daughter, Caitlin, and his parents, as well as other

extended family and friends. As his genealogy friends, we will miss

him very much, too.

want for the Spring Seminar by November 15. The Board would like YOUR input

concerning the topics. Please check four (4) of the presentations in the list

World War I

World War I, or the War to End All Wars, ended on November 11, 1918. This

means that Veterans Day this year will be the beginning of the countdown to

the 100th anniversary of the end of the WWI next year. If you haven’t found

records about your WWI veteran, now could be the time to start and the April-

June issue of NGS Magazine (the Journal of the National Genealogical Society)

could be a big help to you.

The different articles have lots of links to WWI resources and I learned many

things about WWI that I didn’t know. BGS is a member of the National Genea-

logical Society, so NGS Magazines are in our Library. If you are interested in

WWI, this issue is worth a look, and while you’re at it, take a look at other NGS

Magazine issues. One of them might be full of some information that you need.

About 80% of Army records were lost in the fire at the St. Louis Archives in

1973, including those of my Uncle, Haddon W. Stomgren, who was in the Army

in World War I. I never knew much about his involvement in the war, and I was

lucky to find his WWI records at the state level. He lived in Duluth, MN, and

the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) holds records about WWI veterans

from Minnesota. I obtained copies of two files from MHS: 1) Enlistment and
