The Terra Cotta Warriors of China

A group of peasants who were

digging a well in 1974 discovered

a vault that contained pieces of a

life sized Terra Cotta Warrior Army. Inside the vault were

thousands

of warriors and their horses,

an entire army designed to follow

its emperor into eternity



Why were the Terra Cotta Warriors

Buried Underground?

� The warriors were buried underground because

they had to protect Emperor Qin when he died.They were to be his watchers and to also protecthim from bad spirits that would hurt him.

� In ancient times, the Chinese believed that lifeafter death is not different from life on earth. Thesoul of a dead person could continue to enjoy allthe pleasures of every day life. So people whowere rich enough constructed elaborateunderground tombs filled with silk robes, jewelry

with precious stones, furniture, games, boats,chariots and everything the dead person couldpossibly need or want.



What Were The Colors of the S oldiers

Clothes?

� The soldiers wore red and green clothes or

black armor.

� The Terra Cotta Horses were fully painted

also in brown with pink ears, nostrils, and

mouth.



What Was Found in P it One?

� The rectangular arrangement of soldiers in pit onefollows a real battle of information used to defeat

real enemies in ancient times. It is called a sword

information, with frontline archers representing thetip of sword, the chariots and columns of foot

soldiers forming the blade, and rear guard the

handle.



P it Two?

� Pit two is for warriors of all different ranks,

Pit 2 serves as a powerful back-up force to

help the larger army in Pit One. There are

almost 500 horses and about 350 chariot

horses and more than 100 cavalry horses.



P it Three?� Pit three is by far smallest, contains fewer

than seventy warriors with a team of

horses. Archeologists think that pit 3

represents army headquarters. That¶sbecause the soldiers are not arranged in

attack mode.

Traditional Chinese history indicates that the ShangDynasty consisted of 30 kings and 7 different

successive capitals.The Shang Dynasty is considered to be the first trueDynasty of China.

The houses that they used were rectangular, using apost and beam construction and were build on stampearth platforms.

They grew grains such as millet and some wheat which

were harvested with sickle.



One of the most important technology developments of theShang Dynasty was the invention of writing.

They were the first group of people from China, whichwriting records were found for.

The most common place these writings were found on theoracle bones used on divination.

The bones used for this purpose originally came from anumber of animals, but were eventually done exclusively on

turtle shells.

Writing is also found on bronze, stone and silk, but themajority of the records have decayed as they were recordedon Bamboo strips.

He committed suicide

To celebrate his death

each year on the fifth day of the fifth moon dragonboat races are held and rice is thrown into thewater as a sacrifice to his

spirit.
