Comments I was the artillery FO for A/4/3 70-71. First patrols were around FB San Juan Hill west of Duc Pho. From there we flew up to Quang Tri and

2

participated in Lam Son 719. We flew into Khe Sanh and got chewed up on the high ridges north and east of Khe Sanh. I spent some time around FBs Shepard and Vandergriff overlooking QL 9. From Lam Son we flew into a new FB whose name escapes me now. I didn't stay there long as my replacement got to the field and I rotated back to LZ Fat City just north of Chu Lai. I finished my time in country and departed Fat City for the real world. I am thankful that I wasn't injured physically nor mentally despite heavy action up on a nameless sharp ridge where the company was ambushed. My salute is extended to all of y'all with whom I served and my prayers are extended to the families of the loved ones that

3

were KIA and WIA in RVN.

Comments Christmas has gone and passed but it always brings back fond memories of my first night in country. We sailed into a port at Qui Nhon on the USS General Gordon. As we were leaving the ship we were handed live ammo for our weapons. That's when I realized this was the real deal. We loaded on 2 1/2 ton trucks headed to a place called Duc Pho. We were told to dig in for that night and build protection the best we could for we would probably get

5

probed that night by the bad guys. And we did. Christmas dinner for me was a can of beans and franks. They were delicious. HA! For those that were in my Company December 1968, you know the rest of the story. Welcome Home to all my brothers. I love each and every one of you. A 4/3 LIB, Old Guard. Goose

Comments Every Christmas always brings back fond memories of my first night in country in 1967. We, Company A, 4/3, came in by ship into a port called Qui Nhon. We loaded onto 2 1/2 ton transport

6

trucks with live ammo and headed north. Late afternoon we arrived at a small village called Duc Pho. Dug in, built bunkers, and told we would probably get probed that very night. And we did. My Christmas meal was beans and franks in a fox hole with four of the best friends I could ever have. You that were there know the rest of the story. Hope to see most of you in Nashville this year. I miss and love you all. Welcome home, my brothers. Goose

7

Duc Pho, Qunag Tri, Chu Lai, Da Nang, and Dong Ha we will always remember. Remembering, too, those friends and brothers we knew who didn't make it home. They were heroes. Always remember, never forget.

I am grateful for all these soldiers did because of their love for their country, and feel that they got a raw deal when they returned home (those who were able). Hopefully, history will give them the honor that they are due. Thank you for setting up and maintaining this site. God bless each soldier!

Comments I enjoyed seeing the photos of San Juan Hill. I flew to San Jaun Hill many times in 1971 with the 116th AHC and remember two memorable trips. The first was a resupply mission - my UH-1 was so over-loaded we could not climb after taking off. So, we more or less took a dive off the top of San Juan Hill until we had enough air speed to climb. This was probably very scary to my passengers. Now that I'm 65 and not 24, I would have enough sense to offload enough weight to simply climb away from the pad. But at the time it seemed to make senses. The other mission I remember was when we gave a lieutenant his final ride back to Chu Lai from San Juan

20

Hill after his year in Viet Nam was over. We took off and circled around the hill twice so he could wave goodbye to his platoon. This was sometime in the summer of 1971 and I did not know his name. One of the men in his platoon asked me to do this for him and I was glad to oblige.

We were always catching small arms and mortars when running between LZ Vandergrift and Dong Ha or Quang Tri. Hauled a lot of Av gas bladders and Arty powder cansiters and Arty rounds up to khe Sanh. Though we were dug in at Vandergrift we were always on the road. I remember the night we had sappers in the LZ and one of them took an m79 HE in the back of the head. Comments Does anyone have any contacts with former members of B Company? I am a former Co. of A Company (68-69) and a woman in my American Legion Post is inquiring about anyone who may have known Pfc Richard Alan Wiler who was in B Co. She has been given a bunch of dog tags which she is

31

returning to soldiers or to next of kin and one of the tags belonged to Wiler. Wiler died in 2004 and the dog tag (found in Vietnam) is being returned to Wiler's son Jeff in Wilmington, NC. The woman, Sue Quinn, wants to find anyone who served in B co. with Wiler who could contact the son with any information about his father. The information I have about Wiler indicates that he was an RTO with B. co. and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was discharged at Ft. Irwin, Ca on 1 May 70 from USAG, 6th Army which I would assume was the station he was assigned to after returning to CONUS. His service with B. co. was 23 Aug 68 to 22 Aug 69. I would appreciate any information I could pass along.

Comments Flying into DC on June 14th with an old high school friend that was With the 1st Cav when they went into Cambodia in 1970. We are meeting other 1st Cav guys at the Wall on the 15th. It will be good to see it for the first time with other Nam Vets. Got to get this one off the bucket list while we can still enjoy it. Don't want to be wheeled up to it in a wheelchair like a lot of the WWII guys. Want to be able to enjoy all the sites while we are able to appreciate them.

33

Got a few friends on that Wall that meant a lot to me and helped me make it home so it is time to pay my respect for all they did. Hope you all get the same chance someday.

Comments Any one remember the bunker on San Juan Hill that we called Woodstock? It had all the potheads that we didn't want in the bush because of their drug use. They burnt #$@%! during the day and did what they wanted at night because the Army didn't know what else to do with them. We kicked one guy

out of our squad that was seeing and hearing things at night that none of us did. He was a good guy till he got messed up on drugs. I have often wondered how they did once that got home. Cheap drugs in Nam and real life problems in the US. Hope they got help somewhere, the Army sure didn't care about it. D Co 4/3rd Inf.

Comments (cont'd from previous post) We've gone back there a few times to visit. The people of Duc Pho and surroundings (and generally in all regional Viet Nam) are still very, very poor while people higher up on the

52

ladder are highly corrupt at every level of government (words I heard from locals from South to Central to North of the country). Once again from the bottom of my heart, a warm thank you and gratitude to all American soldiers (and Australian and New Zealand soldiers) for all the sacrifice you've made at such a young age to come to my grandparent’s country and helped fight communism. I wish you all the best and welcome back to your home of America.

my old country of Viet Nam. Although I wasn't born when you guys were in Duc Pho but my grandparents fishing village was 7 km from there. During some of the toughest fighting, they had to relocate their family to Khanh Hoa, just outside of Nha Trang, for a few years and here I was born. We left VN in the early 80s as boat refugees and settled in Australia. I have always heard so much about the war years. My step dad was a captain in the South Vietnamese Army and had served just under 10 years in the re-education/concentration camp of communist Vietnam, immediately after the fall of Saigon, he was caught in the South and sent to the North bordering China to be re-educated according to them. My Grandparents village is called Khanh Bac (near Nui/mount Cua I think). We went back there a few times

Country Muskogee 6/11th B battery hit the LZ April 13,69 and started the daunting task of building an LZ. All of us struggled in the summer. I remember being pinned down from two Russian made 51 caliber machine guns. We were unable to get resupplied and had ran out of water, very low on ammo. The 15th of August I was observing two helicopters that had left San Juan to try and find the locations of the 51's on the south and north side of the LZ. About 10:30 a.m. the chopper on the south side of the hill was hit and started to auto rotate to the ground. However, it exploded before reaching the ground. Six men of the 4/3rd and three chopper personnel were gone. Even after the years I see the event many times over and it was a shame we

Comments I was in Alpha Company 4th Bn 3rd Infantry 11th Bde from Jan 1 to April 13, 1971. Dave "Jane" Moran was our 60 gunner. I was at the NVA ambush on Feb 12. I was in second squad working as a RTO. My nickname was "sunshine." at the time when Dave and Steve were hit, I volunteered to carry 60 ammo to the front. When I arrived to the front, the 60 there was inoperable. The firing subsided about this time. I could still not see David, Steve, or the LT. It was only, later that I found out about them being KIA. It was a cloudy morning

66

on Feb 12. I would like to communicate with anyone who was there on Feb 12.

I was in the bush the night we got mortared (21 Sept '69. After 7 months in the bush I got a job in Duc Pho as Alpha Co. clerk. I was in country from June 1969 - June 1970. Comments I served with A Co. 4th Bat. 3rd Inf. from 1966 to September 1967 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. I was in the weapons squad, M-60 under Sgt. Larry Hinahosa (retired) and Sgt. Arbriol. I left Schofield on August 28, 1967 having served my two year commitment to our country. I got to come home while my buddies ended up going to Vietnam in December of that year (something that has played on my mind for years). Although I did not serve in Vietnam (by the luck of the draw) I have always felt a close kindred to Company A and all the fine men

80

that I trained with that did serve there. I am proud of my service to our country, my service in Company A, and even more proud to be associated with in some small way, all of you. Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver started planning this a year ago. there were around 2,500 people that attended among them around 500 Vietnam Veterans from all branches of the service. They received special Recognition Certificates and a Gold Coin made for this special event. They honored 6 that lost their lives, my brother, Larry

98

Kilgore was one. They honored those MIA-POW. There were 3 fly overs. Three Volley Salute and Taps. It was a wonderful and special day and to see smiles on all those Vietnam Veterans faces and how they were treated by the crowd...They finally got their WELCOME HOME AND THANK YOU...

I have not talked much about Nam in 38 years and have since talked some of the guys, that watched each others back including mine. I came home , because of them and will never forget. A little difficult at first to talk to them ,but after hanging up with each one , I wanted to call them back and just say I will never forget them and we all will always be brothers. I came home in the spring of 1971 after the battle Lam Son 719 .I found out a couple weeks ago that Vernon Hart was killed several

127

months after I came home and what I have found out there is no family to call. We were in an ambush on the rock pile Lam Son 719 --- several guys lost their lives there , Vernon was beside me laying down machine gun fire as I called in fire suport. He was one of the first guys I remember to charge ahead to help secure the perimeter beside me. I just cannot let this guy fade away without someone in his family, if there is any, to know about

Comments I was the medic with 1st platoon on March 29 1970 when Bill Ackerman was shot. It was my first day in the bush. A squad, myself included, was going down to a stream to fill

129

canteens when we were ambushed. I was also at the rice bowl in April the day of the big booby trap. I have the letters I sent home to my parents and girl friend, but I have not looked at them. I am afraid to. I also have a few photos of the medics hooch at Bronco and one or two of the inside of the aid station on San Juan Hill. {P} Do you have any idea when the sit reps for 1970 might be up? I would like to fill in my blank spots, and maybe even hook up with someone from the days. Thank you brothers for a wonderful site, and "Welcome Home" "Doc" Hackworth

Comments Uncle David - I am VERY impressed with all your efforts on a job WELL done with your website. I have tears in my eyes! I wanted to note to you - did you know you could "tag" the photo's with

peoples names so when you move your cursor over them, their name pops up - like in the group photo? Is that you with the dog tag to the right of the photo? I love you and can't wait until we can all get together. Please stay safe and be well. Talk to you soon. Your "Stunning Niece" Tammy xoxo
