Movies in AprilSeward Memorial Library will host two Mid-Week Movies in April. On Thursday, April 4 come to view the newly released DVD of “The Mule,” an American crime drama starring Clint Eastwood. “A Dog’s Way Home” will be on the library screen on Wednesday, April 17. This movie about a dog’s epic 400 mile journey is based on the book by W. Bruce Cameron. Tissues will be available for the touching story about man’s best friend. Both movies begin at 1:15 p.m. Friends and snacks are welcome.

“Heroes for Health”The annual Seward Memorial Health Care Systems Health Fair has been rescheduled to Wednesday, April 24. The theme for 2019 is “Heroes for Health.” Look for the Seward Memorial Library table as well as many valuable community partners promoting good health in Seward.

Soil Tester and Soil TabletsSeward Memorial Library has added a Rapitest Soil Test Kit to their equipment collection. The kit includes pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash test strips. There are directions for how and when to test your soil … taking the guesswork out of gardening. The library also purchased a Rapitest 4-Way Soil Analyzer. The compact portable meter measures the essentials for a successful garden. These new additions will be available for a 7-day check out as soon as spring arrives.

Display Case WinnersThe winners of the February “Guess the Theme” random drawing were Lynnsey Robbins and Maise Atkins. Both patrons received $10 from the Friends of Seward Library. Don’t forget to visit the display case in March and enter your answer.

What Will Everyone in Seward be Reading this Summer?Everyone who attends the Book Review BINGO party will hear the announcement of the 2019 All Seward Reads Together title. Since 2004, each year the community reads a book together during the summer and fall months. The library hosts a variety of programs in conjunction with the topics presented in the book. The finale is a community book discussion and often the author has been involved. Watch for the announcement in April and plan to join in the literary adventure with local readers.

• Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. Sam McCoy will talk about his passion for comic books and his experiences writing this genre.

• Sunday, April 7 the community Poker Walk begins! Pick up your tally sheet at the library. Don’t forget to RSVP for the Pizza Party on April 15.

• Monday, April 8 the Friends of Seward Library will eat out together at 5:30 p.m.

• The Concordia women’s basketball national champions will share their individual sports stories on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. Coach Drew Olson will join in the recap of their inspiring season.

• Children enrolled in the spring library Story Times will enjoy a Donut Party on Wednesday, April 10 at 10 a.m.

• On Thursday, April 11 Book Review BINGO with ice cream treats begins at 6:30 p.m.

• On Saturday, April 13 York College Traveling Children’s Theatre presents “The New Clothes King and the Bandit Queen” at 1 p.m.

• Poker drawings end at local businesses on Saturday, April 13.

• Turn in your poker hand. The poker tally sheets must be turned in to the library by noon on Monday, April 15. A pizza party for the participants will start at 6:00 p.m.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. Seward Memorial Library joins in the April 7-13 celebration and fills the week with extra activities and events for the entire family. Add dates from this list to your calendar and plan to be at the library often.

York College Traveling Children’s Theatre cast

re-tell this hilarious story. The talented students will

perform “The New Clothes King and the Bandit Queen” in the lower level conference room. Everyone is invited

to this one-hour show. Children who have not yet attended school must be

accompanied by an adult.

The Amazing World of Comics: Capes, Cowls, Conventions, and Beyond!Everywhere you turn you can’t escape the influence that comic books have had on pop culture. The biggest movies, TV shows, and video games are often either adapted from or influenced by comics. On Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. Sam McCoy will take a brief look at the history of comics and how they have evolved and changed over time. He will share insights into the future of comics. Sam will also talk about some of his favorite comics and comic creators. Come for a fun-filled program about one of the most unique American art forms; cosplaying costumes optional.

Poker WalkYou may have heard of a poker run, but have you ever gone on a poker walk?

Seward Memorial Library will introduce this activity available for all ages during National Library Week. Visit the library beginning on April 7 to pick up your tally sheet and draw your first card. You will also get a list of the rules at that time, and you can RSVP for the April 15 Poker Walk Pizza Party. Visit local participating businesses during April 7-13 to draw cards and have your tally sheet marked. Be sure to return your tally sheet to the library by noon on April 15 so that the judges have time to identify the winning hand(s) before the pizza party that evening, at 6:00, when prizes will be announced. It will be a win-win evening for all. Take a stroll and join the game…minus the table.

Book Review BINGOPrizes, an ice cream buffet, books, and BINGO! All of these are included in the program offered at Seward Memorial Library on Thursday, April 11 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The staff at Seward Memorial Library will review titles which have been published in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Participants can hear recommendations and gather lists of titles for future reading. As books are reviewed listeners cross off titles on BINGO cards while enjoying an ice cream sundae provided by the Friends of Seward Library. The 2019 Notable Books and the 2019 RUSA Reading List titles will be available, too. Come and join in the literary fun … it will be a sweet night.

National Champions Visit the Library during National Library WeekOn March 12 the Concordia University women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II National Championship. The hard working, talented team will share their individual stories of how they acquired excellent basketball skills. Coach Drew Olson will be with the team to tell about some of the highlights of their memorable season. There will be time to ask questions and interact with the teammates. The library will host this special athletic evening on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. Basketball fans of all ages are welcome!

March: Focus on Non-Profit … Seward Meals on WheelsSeward Memorial Library has hosted two meetings in the past 6 months to gather information about the many non-profit organizations who nurture

our community. The library hopes to make

local residents aware of the resources that are available through various groups. Pamphlets

with details about the variety of resources

provided by non-profits are available at the library. The library

will focus on one group each month in the newsletter beginning with the popular Meals on Wheels program.

Here are some facts about the valuable service provided to Seward resident by Meals on Wheel:

• A hot noon meal is prepared and delivered daily by volunteers using their own cars five days a week. Most customers are elderly, ill or handicapped, making it difficult for them to prepare a well-balanced, hot meal. Meals on Wheels help them stay in their homes longer or recuperate from an illness or surgery.

• Seward Meals on Wheels was started in Seward in 1972 and has NEVER taken any tax funds. Since the meals cost more than what is charged to the customer, donations make up the difference.• Meals are prepared by Pac N Save in Seward. More than 500 meals are served each month to over 30 customers.

• How can you help? Deliver meals! It only takes 45 minutes to do a route. We need regular route drivers who deliver meals once a week. We also need substitute drivers when the regulars can’t deliver. Call Pam Garrett at 402-641-0469 to volunteer to drive a route! It’s fun and very rewarding!

New Databases Purchased by the LibrarySeward Memorial Library added a huge amount of valuable information when the library purchased the Gale LegalForms powered by US Legal Forms and Testing & Educational Center powered by Peterson’s®. These two new databases are located on the library website’s catalog page under Electronic Resources. Gale LegalForms provides a wealth of information as well as the accepted forms for many situations from wills to divorces to tenants and bankruptcy. An attorney directory is available. Current tax forms are also one of the categories. The information has a Nebraska emphasis.

For those patrons who are preparing for changes in their lives through education the Testing & Educational Reference Center is a gold mine. The database addresses a wide range of ages from high school to grad school and includes basic skill tutorials and resumé writing. There are career prep tests as well as international tests. Take time to explore these amazing resources. Forms that may have been a challenge to obtain are now just a fingertip away.

Scrapbooking DaySeward Memorial Library has been hosting scrapbooking Saturdays each month this year. Now is the time to get your graduation photos cleaned up and arranged in an album for the celebration in May. The library will provide tips as well as access to their equipment to make it easier to accomplish this daunting task. The room opens on April 27 at 9:30 a.m. and is available for scrapbooking enthusiasts until 2:30 p.m. Any project theme is welcome to join in the undisturbed workday.
