I t’s the week before Thanksgiving as I write this. It’s snowing in other parts of

the country and we are expecting rain. I know we don’t get the cold and snowy

weather, but it’s always nice to have a warm quilt to snuggle under.

Sue Rasmussen, our speaker for November, was so entertaining. Her quilts were

wonderful and her stories . . . my favorite was the one about her bra hanging on

the back of the van. And, of course she commemorated it with a quilt!

In December we will be entertained with a wonderful peek into the sewing

rooms, dare I say, studios of a few of our wonderful members. I hear it will be a

fun day!

It’s been a fabulous year! I have enjoyed being your president. It’s a lot of work

but very rewarding to see all of you each month. We have such a good group of

“worker bees” behind the scenes that when the meeting time comes everything

goes together so seamlessly that it seems effortless. Thanks to all those that

helped me this year. It has been greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to the coming year and all that it will bring.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year,

Bonnie Lippincott

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

T he 2012-2013 Opportunity Quilt Committee needs your help. We have been given permission to

use quilt designer Edyta Sitar’s “Farmhouse Quilt” pattern and it is very scrappy. We need you to donate

2-1/2 inch by width-of-fabric strips of medium to dark fabrics in greens, blues, reds, golds, and rusts.

The fabrics may be regular 100% cotton quilt fabrics or batiks, tone-on-tone, small, medium, and large

scale prints. We would ask there be no white in the background or prints. Please bring your strips to the

December and January meetings and drop them off next to the Membership Sign in table.

My Wife, The Quilter

S he learned to quilt on Monday. Her stitches were very

fine. She forgot to thaw out dinner, so we went out to dine.

She quilted miniatures Tuesday. She says they are a must.

They really were quite lovely. But she forgot to dust.

On Wednesday, it was a sampler. She says the stipplin’s fun.

What highlights! Oh what shadows! But the laundry wasn’t

done.

Her charm quilt was on Thursday, Green patches, blue and

red. I guess she really was engrossed; She never made the

bed.

It was wall hangings on Friday, in colors she adores. But she

never seemed to notice the crumbs on the floors.

I found a maid on Saturday! My week is not complete. My

wife can quilt the hours away, The house will still be neat.

Well, it’s already Sunday, I think I’m about to wilt. I cursed,

I rave, I ranted-The MAID has learned to Quilt!

WORKSHOPS: LOOKING FORWARD

T he workshop with Sue Rasmussen was a joy. Everyone got their pieces placed and now is ready to sew.

The technique was easy to learn, so expect to see many completed pieces. I can see how you can apply this

method to the landscape projects you are anxious to do without having to use appliqué.

Marie and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who took workshops in 2011. We hope you

enjoyed them as much as we did and that they have inspired you in your quilting endeavors.

Signups for the 2012 workshops will be in December. The form is available in the newsletter. Just fill it out,

include your check for the appropriate amount ($30 per workshop) and turn it in at the workshop table. Forms

are processed in the order received.

Below are short descriptions of the up-coming workshops to help you make your choices.

February— Sylvia Davis, Wibbons The quilt has four ribbons twisting and turning across the back-

ground making your eye believe there are curves when there is no curved piecing.

March—Anelie Belden, Thoroughly Modern Dresden This is an updated version of the Dresden Plate

with new construction ideas which make the blocks go together more successfully.

April— Martha Nordstrand, Iris Applique A new appliqué technique using glue sticks and label paper to

create beautiful flowers.

May— Peggy Martin, Quick Paper Piecing Her assembly line paper piecing will make your paper piec-

ing faster and accurate.

June— Becky Goldsmith, Appliqué Outside the Lines Explore design options and learn how to impro-

vise within a pattern.

August—Carol Logue, Orion’s Star or A better Star for All Seasons Learn how to get those points just

right on the stars.

September— Christal Carter, Wool Appliqué Sunflowers This is a no machine class as you will learn to

appliqué with wool using a blanket stitch.

October— Justine Gentile, Crazy Quilting Two types of crazy quilt blocks will be constructed and em-

broidery stitches will be taught.

November— Rita Verroca, Rose Hand Appliqué Sharpen up your appliqué skills and learn to enhance

the appliqué with inking and embroidery.

Explore the websites of the featured artists by googling their names. All artists may not have a website (e.g.

Justine Gentile).

Supply lists and directions to the workshop are sent to enrolled participants approximately 2-3 months in ad-

vance. Hope to see you a workshop in 2012.

Quilters’ UFO Challenge 2011/2012

Name_____________________________________________________

Phone No. ____________________Email:_________________________

Entry Fee: $10:00 R’cd on________________ by__________________

Important Information

This is a chance to turn 5 UFOs into quilts in only one year!

Decide which of your UFOs need to be quilts by the end of 2012. Pick 5.

Describe the finished quilts in the boxes on the back of this page. Make sure that No. 1 is the one

you want to work on first. Provide enough information to easily identify each quilt. For ex-

ample, “green churn dash” is a better description than “Bill’s birthday quilt”. Fill out both

copies of the list, and keep one for yourself, so you know what to work on next!

Finished means quilted, bound, and labeled.

After the first quilt, which will be due in January 2012 but may be turned in early, one quilt will

be due every two months. The order in which the quilts (except the first one) will be due will

be random to add to the fun and challenge.

When you turn in your entry form, you’ll be given a participant ribbon to wear this year. As you

turn in each quilt, you’ll be given a button to sew to the ribbon to show how many of your

UFOs have become quilts this year.

Everyone who finishes at least one UFO will be entered into a drawing for a nice prize, but re-

member, the REAL prize is 5 finished quilts! Your odds of winning will never be better.
