Volleyball With team captain Allie Matt gone for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the Beavers traveled to Spalding University Oct. 14. Blackburn was handled in three straight sets 25-7, 25-18 and 25-12. Pa- trece McLain had four kills and Jessica McClelland had three kills to lead the Beavers. The team had a chance to earn their first conference victory Thurs- day the 18th when they hosted Fontbonne University. Unfor- tunately, Fontbonne proved to be too much for Blackburn as they swept the Beavers in three straight sets again 25-13, 25-16 and 25-16. Miller and McClel- land led the way in kills again with five apiece while Amy Wal- ton contributed ten digs. With the loss, the Beavers are 1-19 on the season. Women’s Soccer The Blackburn College Wom- en’s Soccer Team had a chal- lenging schedule this past week. They opened their week against Webster University, who is cur- rently in first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The first place Gor- loks over-powered the Beavers winning 9-0. Shana Sewick had a busy day in goal for Blackburn with 16 saves. Monday the 14th, the team traveled to Louisville, Ky. to battle Spalding University. Spalding proved to be just as difficult as Webster as they de- feated Blackburn by a score of 5-0. At the half, Blackburn trailed just 2-0. Sewick contin- ued to have her hands full with a ten-save performance. Looking to pick up a victory at least one victory on the week, the Beavers headed out to Principia College Saturday Oct. 19th. Blackburn dropped a 5-0 decision at the hands of the Panthers. Shana Sewick notched 14 saves in the contest. On offense, the Beavers struggled against the Principia defense as they were unable to manage a shot. Next up for Blackburn will be another SLIAC opponent, the Panthers of Greenville College on Wednesday, October 23, at 3 p.m. Men’s Soccer This week the men’s soccer team also had a shortage of of- fensive power. St. Louis In- tercollegiate Conference Player of the Week Shane Rogers had a great day in goal with 21 saves. Then on the 14th they traveled to Louisville, Ky. to face Spalding in hopes to climb their way into a playoff spot. Spalding came out and scored five early goals to lead 5-0 at the halfway point. In the second half the Beavers ended the shutout when Spald- ing scored an own goal. How- ever, Spalding also went on to score four more goals and won the match 9-1. The Beavers wrapped up their weak against Principia on October 19th. It was an evenly matched game even though Blackburn went into the second half down 3-0. Blackburn at- tempted a rally with two second- half goals by Lucas Rochkes and Mikey Stephenson. It wasn’t enough as Principia also scored two goals of their own to put the game out of reach 5-2. BC athletes continue busy fall schedule Lewis and Clark Community College is accepting nominations for coaches and athletes to be in- ducted into its Athletics Hall of Fame through Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. “Lewis and Clark has a rich ath- letic history of individuals who have made strong contributions to our teams. Many of these individu- als have continued their success at other colleges and in semi-profes- sional and professional athletics,” said Sean Hill, vice president of Student Engagement at Lewis and Clark. “We are pleased to accept nominations for the Lewis and Clark Athletics Hall of Fame and honor some of the strongest athlet- ic performers and contributors.” This year, a maximum of three individuals will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Nominations for inductees can be made by former players, coaches, college person- nel, contributors and supporters of athletics and sports profession- als, such as sports writers, pho- tographers and sports editors and directors. Nominations for inductees can be made by former players, coaches, college person-nel, contributors and supporters of athletics and sports profession-als, such as sports writers, pho-tographers and sports editors and directors. Please use the appropri-ate Lewis and Clark Community College Athletics Hall of Fame Nomination form, located online at lc.edu/athletics.
A selection committee compris-ing college representatives, sports editors and directors and alumni will vote on and accept this year’s inductees. All inductees selected will be honored during a special ceremony in Spring 2014.
