The non-profit 5th Avenue Theatre is one of the country’s leading musical theater companies. Our mission is to “nurture, advance and preserve all aspects of America’s great indigenous art form: The Musical. We achieve this by creating extraordinary theatrical experiences that enrich, entertain and inspire current and future audiences everywhere.”

The 5th is committed to achieving the highest standards of artistic excellence by employing world-class performers and creative artists, utilizing full live orchestras, and staging exceptional and imaginative productions. The 5th places a special emphasis on employing our amazing community of Puget Sound-based artists and technicians.

We are nationally renowned for our production and development of new musicals. Since 2001, The 5th has premiered 17 new works, nine of which have subsequently opened on Broadway. They include Disney’s Aladdin, First Date, A Christmas Story, Scandalous, Shrek, Catch Me If You Can, The Wedding Singer and Best Musical Tony Award®-winners, Hairspray and Memphis. We are equally acclaimed for our vibrant new productions of musicals from the “Golden Age of Broadway” and contemporary classics. These signature revivals enthrall fans of these enduring works and introduce these great shows to new generations of musical theater lovers. Our celebrated educational programs serve more than 83,000 young people each year through a host of projects including our Adventure Musical Theater Touring Company, The 5th Avenue Awards and the unique Rising Star Project. For adults, we offer free-to-the-public events such as the popular Spotlight Night series and pre-performance Show Talks with Albert Evans. We are the largest arts employer in the Pacific Northwest with more than 800 actors, singers, dancers, musicians, creative artists, theatrical technicians and arts professionals working for us each season.

As a non-profit theater company supported by the community, we enjoy the patronage of more than 20,000 season subscribers (one of the largest theater subscriptions in America). More than 330,000 audience members attend our performances each year.

OUR HISTORIC THEATER The 5th Avenue Theatre’s breathtaking design was inspired by ancient Imperial China’s most stunning architectural achievements, including the magnificent Forbidden City. Built in 1926 for vaudeville and silent pictures, The 5th Avenue Theatre reigned for decades as Seattle’s favorite movie palace. In 1979, 43 companies and community leaders formed the non-profit 5th Avenue Theatre Association and restored the theater to its original splendor. The 5th Avenue Theatre re-opened in 1980 as Seattle’s premier home for musical theater.

The 5th Avenue Theatre gratefully acknowledges our 43 original founders and sponsors. Please visit www.5thavenue.org for specific information on these important companies and individuals.

FROM THE DESK OF DAVID ARMSTRONG EXECUTIVE PRODUCER AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

TRADITION!

Over the past 36 years, thousands of Northwest families have made a trip to The 5th Avenue Theatre a cherished part of their annual holiday

traditions. Many of these theatergoers who first attended one of our holiday productions as children now return year after year with their children and grandchildren.

All of us here at The 5th—our staff, cast, crew and orchestra—are thrilled and humbled by the impact these productions have on our audience. We know that for many young people these holiday productions are the very first exposure they will have to the wonder and joy of live theater and our great indigenous American art form—The Musical.

Every year we endeavor to select a show that will be equally entertaining to multiple generations of audience members. I believe that Disney’s The Little Mermaid fits that bill to perfection.

This stage version is adapted from the hit 1989 animated film that was itself inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s famous tale. In addition to being wonderfully engaging, the movie had a significant impact on at least two aspects of our contemporary popular culture. First and most directly, the success of the film inspired what is known as “the Disney Renaissance,” leading to the production of an entire string of memorable animated musical features including Beauty and The Beast, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Mulan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Aladdin.

Secondly, and most importantly from my point of view, The Little Mermaid and the films that followed were released in theaters and on videotape, during the perfect 10 year period to totally entrance the new millennial generation, inspiring a huge cohort of children to watch them over and over again. I believe this phenomenon engendered in millennials a great love and affinity for the classic form and content of Broadway musicals. Like their baby boomer grandparents, it seems perfectly natural to this younger generation that writers employ music to heighten their dramas or that characters would express their dreams and passions by bursting into song and dance. This, I believe, has in great part led to the “Musical Theater Renaissance” that has emerged over the past decade on Broadway, on television and here at The 5th. Our production of The Little Mermaid is on track to become the most attended holiday show in our theater’s history, and millennials will make up a huge part of our audience. Welcome to you all!

MORE THAN A FAIRY TALEBy KWAPI VENGESAYI, Community Engagement Specialist

WHAT DREW YOU TO DISNEY’S THE LITTLE MERMAID?

DIANA HUEY (DH): Singing “Part of Your World” as a child is one of my earliest memories. I vividly remember knowing every word and mimicking each intonation while daydreaming that I was a beautiful mermaid princess. The opportunity to live out one of my childhood dreams is incredible!

GLENN CASALE (GC): I loved the film and when I first saw it I thought, “This is a Broadway show!” I read the Hans Christian Andersen short story and wanted to

dig deeper into the characters and the relationships through this production.

MATTHEW KACERGIS (MK): I grew up on the Disney musical cartoons and The Little Mermaid was certainly a staple. It’s got some absolutely incredible music, both from the original film and some new songs written for the stage production. I also love how Glenn and the creative team have decided to tell this story.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid has enthralled international audiences across generations and cultures. Its score is enchanting and visuals captivating, but it’s more than just a fairy tale about a beautiful princess who falls in love with a dashing prince. In an interview with Director Glenn Casale and actors Diana Huey and Matthew Kacergis, we discuss this beloved story and our own spectacular production.

DH: This production is full of Disney magic, excitement and of course, the music we all love! It’s a classic loved by so many people and I can’t wait for new generations to get to experience it for the first time and for older generations to get to get to relive a childhood favorite! I hope everyone leaves singing and dancing with joy in their hearts.

GC: Disney’s The Little Mermaid reminds us that family is priceless and it is important to listen to someone who wants to change.

MK: I hope our audiences walk away believing in the power of their own individuality and their dreams. I hope families are reminded to listen to one another. I hope they leave singing the beautiful music. And of course, I hope they leave with smiles on their faces!

WHAT IS THIS STORY ABOUT TO YOU?

DH: A huge part of Ariel’s story is that she feels like she can’t be her true self. There’s no doubt that she loves her father, family and friends, but if you can’t be happy with yourself, then you’re stuck in a pretty miserable rut. It’s hard to give your best self to the world if you are limiting that best self from thriving. I hope to bring Ariel’s strength and bravery to the stage and inspire people to be happy, fulfilled and proud of who they are!

GC: It is about a young girl who is trying to figure out who she is and why she is different from her sisters. She is not comfortable with her fins and the body she inhabits: she knows that she belongs somewhere else. She finds the courage to explore this new world and life.

MK: I think Ariel and Eric are both young people who are just discovering their own individualism and they are both feeling restricted in the world they were born into. We have all experienced what it’s like to feel different and to have dreams that set us apart. We, the cast, owe it to the dreamers in the audience to be generous with that part of ourselves so they know there are others out there who have the audacity to chase their dreams.

DH: Fairy tales are often centered around important themes like self-discovery, family, bravery and adventure. They are also some of the first stories we hear as children. I think that they help instill a foundation in us to be a good and happy person. I know that whenever I hear them again, they always bring out the inner child in me.

GC: I feel we never lose the sense of wonder and hope that fairy tales give us. We know the lessons we learned from them as children and we want to relive them and share them with the next generations. That is what is so great about them—you can share the experience with the whole family.

MK: The beautiful thing about fairy tales is that they can take a story about an everyday experience and remove the limitations of reality. But despite the fact that magic might intervene, there’s always a moral that reminds us that it’s up to us to make the change

WHY DO FAIRY TALES CAPTIVATE US AS CHILDREN AND STICK WITH US INTO ADULTHOOD?

WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR AUDIENCES TO TAKE AWAY WHEN THEY LEAVE THE THEATER?

we want to see. The magic helps children develop their imagination and sense of wonder; the moral of the story stays with us into adulthood.

ASHMAN AND MENKEN: DISNEY’S RENAISSANCE MENBy ALBERT EVANS, Artistic and Education Associate

Fairy tales might seem like effortless magic—all you need is a storyteller and an audience—but bringing the magic to life on stage and screen requires the combined efforts of a small army of artists and craftspeople.

Look at the credits of a Disney animated classic like The Little Mermaid and you’ll see the names of hundreds of folks who labor, sometimes for years, to create all of the elements of a fantasy world.

When a film is brought to life on the stage, dozens more people are enlisted to re-imagine the story and make it work with live actors wearing real costumes on physical sets—creating that classic Disney magic before your eyes.

One of the elements the audience remembers vividly long after they leave the theater is the music and lyrics.

The enchanting Little Mermaid songs were written by two very talented men: Howard Ashman, who penned the lyrics, and Alan Menken, who handled the music.

In the late 1980s, Menken and Ashman were young musical theater collaborators with one big credit: Little Shop of Horrors, the hilarious sci-fi/horror spoof that opened off-Broadway in 1979 and was made into a feature film seven years later.

Alan Menken and Howard Ashman had met through a mutual friend—Maury Yeston, another young theater songwriter who would go on to write Nine and Titanic.

Menken was working as a lyricist-composer, fresh from the Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) Musical Theatre Workshop for aspiring theater writers, ready to conquer the world with a sheaf of funny revue songs in his portfolio.

Ashman was a bookwriter-lyricist and the artistic director of the adventurous off-Broadway playhouse, the WPA Theatre. He was looking for a composer to work with on his stage adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater.

Although reluctant to give up the lyric-writing job, Menken agreed to collaborate.

The partnership was more successful than the musical: Rosewater got excellent reviews but ran for a scant 49 performances. But the team got along well and immediately began work on their breakthrough show, Little Shop of Horrors.

While in Hollywood working on the Little Shop movie, Ashman was invited to a brainstorming session at the Disney studio. At the time, Disney was concentrating more and more on live action movies, and there was talk that animation—long at the heart of the Disney enterprise—might be dropped entirely.

Then the success of Who Framed Roger Rabbit—the live action/animation hybrid produced in collaboration with Steven Spielberg—renewed interest in the cartoon form.

The studio decided to produce one more animated fairy tale, a form they had neglected for the past thirty years. They chose Hans Christian Andersen’s story “The Little Mermaid.” Ashman convinced the Disney team to adapt it as a “Broadway-style” film musical.

For his leadership and vision, Ashman was named co-producer, and he brought on board his writing partner Alan Menken to score the music.

The Ashman-Menken songs helped make The Little Mermaid an enormous success, igniting a 10-year, 10-film creative explosion known as the Disney Renaissance.

Howard Ashman played a key role in two more Disney films, writing all the lyrics for Beauty and the Beast and much of Aladdin before his tragic and untimely death in 1991 at the age of 40.

Alan Menken finished the Aladdin score with lyricist Tim Rice, then continued to work for Disney, collaborating with Stephen Schwartz on Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and with David Zippel on Hercules.

Menken credits much of his success to an ability to improvise at the piano in almost any style—a gift he had from an early age.

THE BEGINNING OF A BEAUTIFUL FRIENDSHIP...

16 T H E 5 T H A V E N U E T H E A T R E

Page 17: Disney's The Little Mermaid

When his parents were in the room Menken would dutifully practice his Beethoven sonatas. When they left he’d improvise his own “Beethoven.” From the next room they couldn’t tell the difference.

When his piano teacher learned the secret, he told Menken’s parents, “Perhaps this is something we should encourage Alan to do.”

In composing for film and theater, Menken uses this skill to give each score a unique musical palette: calypso, Kurt Weill and sea chanteys for The Little Mermaid; 19th century operetta for Beauty and the Beast; 40s jazz and Arabic music for Aladdin.

After Howard’s death, Alan grieved. “It really was like a marriage,” he said.

But he rebounded and built a show-business career second to none, with nine Oscars, 11 Grammys and a Tony. Menken’s post-Renaissance films include Newsies, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Enchanted and Tangled. For the theater, he scored A Christmas Carol, Leap of Faith and Sister Act.

The stage adaptations of his films Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Newsies and Aladdin have made Disney Theatricals a mighty presence on Broadway and spurred the clean-up of the once tawdry Times Square area.

Most recently has been the adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame: The Musical, with lyrics by Menken’s frequent partner Glenn Slater—who also wrote the lyrics for the new songs in The Little Mermaid.

Thanks largely to the Disney Renaissance, a generation of kids—and now their kids—have grown up loving classic Broadway musical style songs, which in turn has led them to participate in school musicals in ever greater numbers.

When you ask young performers which songs made them fall in love with musical theater, their answers are likely to include “Somewhere That’s Green,” “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” “Be Our Guest” and “Beauty and the Beast”—songs that will never die. Songs by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken.

NEXTFESTTHE 5TH AVENUE THEATRE’S SECOND ANNUAL FESTIVAL FOR NEW WORKSThis October, The 5th presented NextFest, its second annual Festival for New Works. Eleven new projects were introduced during the three week festival, at varying levels of evolution, from table reads and writing intensives to full readings.

Three of the works at NextFest (The Long Game, The Rumble Within and Anybody Can Do Anything) emerged from another new works initiative, our inaugural Seattle Writers Group, which is a two-year program providing six writers the opportunity to attend bi-weekly meetings to share and discuss their work in progress.

NextFest also featured a writing intensive and table read of a new commission for The 5th’s education program, Adventure Musical Theater Touring Company (AMT). Free Boy, based on the book by Seattle historians Lorraine McConaghy and Judy Bentley, tells the tale of Charles Mitchell’s harrowing escape from Washington Territory in 1860 through the Canadian Underground Railroad. In a more immediate sense, the work completed on Free Boy during NextFest will be seen in spring 2017 when it is performed by AMT in elementary and junior high schools throughout Washington State.

“The 5th is committed to making sure that future generations will be able to enjoy relevant and compelling musical theater,” said Producing Artistic Director Bill Berry. “This year’s festival celebrates the richness and breadth of storytelling that is possible in musical theater.” For The 5th, the development and initial support of new works is just as important as the end product. Without the support and freedom to fully investigate and intensively examine these new works throughout the entirety of the creation process, they would never progress to the point of being ready to present on a stage.

It’s also imperative to engage and instruct young writers and artists in all stages of musical development, which is why The 5th was proud to present the result of the inaugural 10-Minute Musical Project, a new education program. Designed for students ages 14 to 19, the

program aims to empower students and support their future achievement by introducing them to the crafts and skills associated with songwriting, book writing, directing and the workshop process. Students participated as book writers, composers, lyricists, directors,

music directors, stage managers, actors, marketing administrators and photographers/videographers. Following several months of work during the summer, these students culminated their program with a presentation of four original works at NextFest.

To read more about the 10-Minute Musical Project, please visit: www.5thavenue.org/10-minute-musical-project.

Special Thanks to Marleen & Kenny Alhadeff, Beth & Buzz Porter, Cynthia Stroum, and an anonymous donor for their

support of and dedication to the New Works Program.28 T H E 5 T H A V E N U E T H E A T R E

SPOTLIGHT ON HATTIE ANDRES2016/17 DIRECTING AND ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP FELLOW

By ORLANDO MORALES, Director of Rising Star Project & Internships

When you ask Hattie Andres to describe the best part of being the first recipient of The 5th’s Directing and Artistic Leadership Fellowship, she responds with a cliché that is telling of a young disciple of musical theater:

“The best part is being ‘in the room where it happens.’ I grew up seeing so many productions on this stage and now all of a sudden I’m seeing it all come together—from the ground up.”

However, it hasn’t taken long for Andres to confirm that her fellowship entails a bit more than just being in the room. The fellowship, currently a pilot program at The 5th, seeks to provide an early-career creative artist with a unique growth opportunity while specifically addressing the inequities in access and representation. Andres’s first role this season in line with that fellowship was to serve as assistant director for Man of La Mancha.

“Allison [the Man of La Mancha director] had to step out of the room at one point to speak to someone. And the stage manager looked at me and asked what I wanted to do with rehearsal. I thought, “Whoa—this is me.” That was a thrilling, terrifying, awesome moment. So much of being an assistant director is sitting quietly and getting to know every single detail of the show—and writing down everything the director says so that you have it as a point of reference. But in that first moment—when you need to take all of that and actually lead the room—it’s very exciting.”

The arts have always played an important role in Andres’s life.

“I started playing piano and violin and participating in choir when I was five. I had my first formal theater class when I was seven. And that’s just testament to having parents who are amazing supporters of the arts. My dad is a musician—it was always like, ‘Of course you’re going to sing, of course you’re going to play music.’ Now I think they regret it, because all of their children are going into the arts.”

Andres lets a mischievous laugh interrupt her sentimental origin story. An interminable twinkle in her eye suggests that she is the kind of person who pursues her goals with passion and grace, but also humor. She discovered an interest in being a theater director by way of being a theater producer. By her junior year

of high school in 2008, Andres had founded a theater company which is still producing and run entirely by young people between the ages of 14 and 21.

“Shout out to Young Americans’ Theatre Company!”

By her senior year, she had self-produced a musical at her high school—a lesser known pop-influenced show called Zanna, Don’t which she championed in an effort to address issues that she cared about.

“When I was in high school, the majority of the student body still equated heternormativity and masculinity to ‘cool.’ I wanted to flip that upside down for people.”

When she speaks about her path toward artistic leadership and her aspirations of being a theater director, it is clear she is driven by an understanding of the potential impact that musical theater can have on today’s society.

“In The Age of Technology, or The Digital Age or whatever we’re calling it, musical theater has been able to retain its epic storytelling. We are constantly giving and taking things at face value. But I think musicals ask us to step beyond that, let that go and engage in a world that is real. I have a physical, visceral response to watching musicals up on stage. We can tell stories about real, pertinent things, but in a way that is different than just, ‘Here, this is what happened—and now you know it.’ Great musicals invite us to digest for ourselves and interpret for ourselves.”

Her faith in theater and musicals points her toward a horizon beyond her term with The 5th and into a future that she can contribute to in a meaningful way.

“My hope for musical theater is that we continue to be inventive in how we tell stories. And we continue to give more opportunities for all voices to be represented on the stage—voices that aren’t represented in mainstream Hollywood and haven’t been represented in theater in the past. I think that you can tell the same story from many different viewpoints and I hope that we continue to find the overlooked viewpoints—because that is how we better understand each other—and how we better understand the world around us, not just our position in it.”

DAVID ARMSTRONG (Executive Producer and Artistic Director) Since his appointment in 2000, Armstrong has guided The 5th Avenue to a position as one of the nation’s leading musical theater companies, acclaimed for both its development and production of new works and its innovative stagings of classic musicals. As a director, he has created memorable 5th Avenue productions of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well & Living in Paris, A Room with a View; Oliver!; Candide; Hello, Dolly!; Sweeney Todd; White Christmas; Hair; Mame; A Little Night Music; The Secret

Garden; Anything Goes; Company; The Rocky Horror Show; Pippin; Vanities; Yankee Doodle Dandy!; and Saving Aimee, which made its Broadway debut as Scandalous under Armstrong’s direction in November 2012. Prior to The 5th, he spent nearly 20 years as a freelance director, choreographer, and librettist. His work has been seen in New York, Los Angeles and at many leading regional theaters including The Kennedy Center, Ordway Center, Ford’s Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse, and New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. From 1990 through 1995, he served as artistic director of Cohoes Music Hall in upstate NY. Armstrong has also written the books for the musicals The Wonder Years (winner of seven Drama-Logue Awards), Gold Rush, and Yankee Doodle Dandy!

BERNADINE (BERNIE) C. GRIFFIN (Managing Director) first joined The 5th Avenue in 2002 as director of theater advancement and development. She was appointed managing director in January 2010 and is responsible for the administrative, marketing, fundraising, information services and facility operations, as well as oversight of all activities related to the Board of Directors. During her tenure, The 5th Avenue has grown from a $10 million to a $25 million organization. She brings to her position 30 years of fundraising and arts management experience. Prior

to The 5th Avenue, she served as director of development for the prestigious Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, as well as for The Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach, California. Before moving to California, she served at the Seattle Symphony where she is proud to have been part of the team that built Benaroya Hall. In addition to the Symphony, Griffin worked for the Tony Award-winning Seattle Repertory Theatre, as well as Tony Randall’s National Actors Theatre in New York. She began her career at the University of Denver. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington and is proud to have been born and raised in Walla Walla, Washington. She has also served as a grants panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts. Griffin was named one of the Puget Sound Business Journal’s 2013 Women of Influence. She is married to award-winning actor Seán G. Griffin.

BILL BERRY (Producing Artistic Director) served as The 5th Avenue’s associate producing artistic director and casting director from 2002 through 2009. During that time, he directed productions of West Side Story (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wonderful Town (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wizard of Oz and Smokey Joe’s Café. In 2014, he made his Broadway debut as the director of the hit musical First Date at the Longacre Theatre. Berry’s directing work has been seen at theaters across the country, most recently at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse where

he directed a critically acclaimed production of On the Town. Directing highlights include Cabaret performed at The 5th Avenue Theatre, St. Paul’s Ordway Center (Ivey Award), San Jose’s American Musical Theatre, and Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars, as well as the smash hits How to Succeed…, Little Shop of Horrors, First Date, RENT, The Music Man, and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel at The 5th. From 2002 to 2009, he served as the producing director for The 5th Avenue’s education and outreach programs. During that time he significantly expanded the scope and impact of these initiatives, including spearheading the creation of Fridays at The 5th and The 5th Avenue Awards, honoring excellence in high school musical theater, as well as substantially increasing the reach of the Adventure Musical Theater Touring Company throughout the Northwest. These programs combined now serve over 83,000 students annually. He also initiated the Show Talk series, which seeks to deepen the theater-going experience. Prior to his work at The 5th Avenue Theatre, Berry was a freelance theater artist based in New York City.
