OLNEY THEATRE CENTER

Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center,

Growing up I remember special family nights around the television: the annual viewing of The Sound of Music, followed shortly by the annual viewing of The Wizard of Oz, and of course the multitude of Christmas specials (this despite the Chanukah candles burning merrily in our Menorah). But Mary Poppins may have been my favorite, perhaps because it wasn’t an annual event, and felt instead like the sighting of a rare and glorious bird. The chimney sweeps’ haunting melodies, the exuberance of “A Spoonful of Sugar”, Mr. Banks’ tear-jerking change of heart… these left an indelible stamp different from the others. It wasn’t historically removed like The Sound of Music or over-the-top fantasy like The Wizard of Oz. It felt somehow more relatable: the story of a distant father and his defiant children who manage, by seeing a bit of magic in the everyday world, to find each other.

Because so many families in our community spend their holidays with us, choosing the holiday musical is harder than it looks. A Golden Age musical might feel too “adult” for those who want to bring their young children and grandchildren. And

musicals made from animated Disney classics might alienate some adults. But everyone at every age has a soft spot for Mary Poppins. So when the rights to the stage musical finally became available, I jumped.

Mary Poppins is also one of the most challenging shows to produce for a theater our size – in fact, it makes our giant Mainstage feel too small! We’ve been building the sets since the summer and storing them in every nook and cranny we can find. We’ve hired the country’s foremost theater magic specialist, Jim Steinmeyer, to help us with the effects (those that aren’t really magic, or at least theater magic!). A Maryland company called D2 Flying Effects has been working with us to make sure Mary can literally soar when we need her. And all this on top of the “usual” holiday musical package: a cast of twenty, an orchestra of nine, a crew of eight backstage, and a creative and production team of dozens more.

We’re putting all we can into making sure this holiday is special for you and your family. We know you can choose to spend your holiday time in lots of places every year, and we’re so grateful you spend it with us.

We give you our very, very best for the holidays and a bright New Year! And as always, let me know what you think at [email protected].

Onward!

A NOTE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

In Mary Poppins, we meet a family who has lost the ability to imagine, but with the help of Mary, their lives become hopeful, colorful, and wonderful. Sometimes, we need others to show us the way. Maybe a parent, a teacher, a friend, or hey -- even a world-class regional theatre in your own backyard helped you to open your imagination and discover new joy? At Olney Theatre, we spend a great deal of time unleashing the creativity of our audiences, especially our younger audiences. In fact, did you know that Olney Theatre teaching artists lead workshops in the classrooms of 7 different schools in Montgomery County throughout the school year? We help the kids write their own plays utilizing themes they learn in class. At the end of each school year, the kids perform their plays on our stage for their family, friends and teachers. Many of these schools also come to Olney Theatre to see specially scheduled school matinees, like Mary Poppins. Most schools can’t afford the program on their own. So, we rely on the generosity

of our patrons and friends to help make up the difference and be able to say “yes” to more schools every year. In this season of giving, I hope you will consider making a gift to Olney Theatre in support of the next generation of theatre audiences. Research has shown that exposing students to live theatre increases empathy and tolerance, improves reading comprehension and can help close the achievement gap -- vital social and academic skills that should be available to all. With your help, the students we work with will know no boundaries.

Make a gift online at olneytheatre.org/donate, or by mailing your gift with the envelope inserted in this program. If you’d like more information about Olney Theatre’s Arts Integration program or other activities at Olney Theatre, please drop me a line at [email protected].

Happy holidays and best wishes for a healthy new year,

Debbie Ellinghaus, Managing Director

My wife and I have attended performances at the Olney Theatre Center for over 30 years. We remember fondly, not only the original theatre with its bushel basket light fixtures, but the wonderful performances. When Olney was raising money for the construction of their new Mainstage and other campus buildings, we purchased a theatre seat to support the campaign.

A few years ago, we set up a philanthropic fund to support the arts community and children. Our obvious first choice was the Olney Theatre. Why? The theatre has produced exceptional plays and musicals and always at affordable prices. They have in the past, and continue today, to raise the bar of artistic excellence.

We wanted to make the theatre available to young children who normally would not be exposed to live theatre. So, we have partnered with Olney Theatre and Highland Elementary School in Wheaton to make free tickets available to students and their families. This will help these students not only experience live theatre, but hopefully ignite a lifelong love of the arts.

Congratulations to Clifford L. Johnson and Margaret T. Roper who were selected by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County as the 2016-17 Volunteers of the Year! This award recognizes the hours of service that Cliff and Margaret devote to Olney Theatre Center. The many gardens around our theatre are maintained almost exclusively by the couple, and their home-grown, award-winning dahlias and zinnias frequently adorn our facility. WHO’S WHO - CREATIVE

P.L. Travers (Author of the Mary Poppins stories) was born in 1899 in Australia in a residence above the bank where her father was branch manager. She began to write while a member of a touring stage company. In 1924, able to support herself as a journalist, she left Australia for England. She wrote a number of other books in addition to the Mary Poppins stories. She was fascinated by myth and fairy tales and traveled widely, living for a time with the Navajo. She was made “writer in residence” at both Smith and Radcliffe colleges in Massachusetts and also received an honorary doctorate from Chatham College, Pittsburgh. She died in London in 1996.

Disney (Producer) Since it was founded by Walt Disney in 1923, The Walt Disney Company has grown to be one of the world’s leading creators and distributors of high-quality entertainment. Under the direction of president and CEO Robert A. Iger, the company’s diverse entertainment interests now include film, theatre, television, radio, home entertainment and music, as well as world- renowned theme parks and resorts. One of the most successful films in Walt Disney Studio’s history was the 1964 film Mary Poppins. It took Walt Disney 20 years to make the film of Mary Poppins from the time he first tried to secure the film rights to its triumphant premiere. The film was a phenomenal success, earning five Academy Awards®, including Best Music and Best Song, and remains one of Disney’s most enduring and best-loved films. Disney Theatrical Productions (DTP) was formed in 1994 with the company’s inaugural production, Beauty and the Beast, which is currently the sixth longest-running show in Broadway history. In 1997, The Walt Disney Company completed restoration of the historic New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street. Later that same year, DTP opened its award-winning production of The Lion King, currently seen in seven productions worldwide. In addition, DTP has produced a German adaptation of the film The Hunchback of notre Dame; Elton John and Tim Rice’s aida; On the record; Mary Poppins, a co-production by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh; and its newest musical, Tarzan®. Further information can be found at www.disneyonbroadway.com.

Cameron Mackintosh (Producer & Co-creator) For nearly 50 years, Cameron Mackintosh has produced more musi-cals than anyone else in history including the three longest-running musicals of all time, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, and Cats, which are still running successfully across the world. Cameron, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of both Les Misérables and The Phantom Of the Opera, mounted new versions of both shows which were as successful as the original. His new production of Miss Saigon, which was the fourth of his great hits of the 1980s, opened to record-break-ing advanced booking in London’s Prince Edward Theatre, having been acclaimed around the world. Mary Poppins, his co-production with Disney, continues to disperse its magic globally. Some of his other musical productions that continue to be produced around the world include Little Shop of Horrors, Side by Side by Sondheim, Martin Guerre, The Witches of Eastwick, Betty Blue Eyes, and Barnum. He also produced the most successful production ever of Stephen Sondheim’s legendary Follies in London. In 2013, Cameron, in conjunction with Working Title Films and Universal, produced his first hugely successful musical film, the Oscar®, Golden Globe, and BAFTA award-winning Les Misérables. Cameron owns seven historic theatres in London’s West End – the Prince of Wales, Gielgud, Queen’s, Wyndham’s, Noël Coward, Novello, and Prince Edward. In May 2014, Cameron announced the acquisition of two major West End theaters – the Victoria Palace Theatre and the Ambassadors Theatre. He is also the co-owner of Music Theatre International, the world’s largest owner of secondary rights of the greatest musicals. In 1995, his company received The Queen’s Award for Export Achievement and he was knighted in the 1996 New Year’s Honours for his services to British theatre. In 2006, he received the National Enjoy England Award for Excellence for his Outstanding Contribution to Tourism, and he was the first British producer elected to the Theater Hall of Fame on Broadway.

Richard M. Sherman & Robert B. Sherman (Original Music & Lyrics) Honors include two Oscars® (Mary Pop-pins), nine Oscar® nominations, three Grammys, 24 Gold/Platinum albums, a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, and induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Early hits including “You’re 16” and “Tall Paul” led to long-term association with Walt Disney and over 150 songs for Disney films, TV, and theme parks with “It’s A Small World” being the world’s most translated and performed song. Sherman Disney film credits include The Jungle Book, The Parent Trap, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Winnie the Pooh, The aristocats, and The Tigger Movie. Other films: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Tom Saw-yer, The Slipper and the rose, Charlotte’s Web, and Beverly Hills Cop 3. MARYPOPPINS

DISNEY AND CAMERON

MACKINTOSH’S

Mary Poppins, as created by author P.L. Travers in 1934, is a bundle of practicality, vanity, disapproval, and, of course, magic. Not that she’d call it that. In fact, whenever Jane and Michael talk about their rather spectacular adventures, Mary Poppins scolds them for being absurd – she’ll let them visit fairy land, but she won’t let them live there. After all, what

sort of disreputable person has an uncle who takes tea on the ceiling? Certainly not Mary Poppins. Nor is her particular brand of magic always benign. Perhaps it sounds delightful to have beloved dolls to come to life – but not when those dolls seek revenge for poor treatment. Yet, as Mary Poppins famously says, she will “never explain anything.”

P.L. Travers – born Helen Lyndon Goff – was fond of saying that Mary Poppins came to her fully formed in 1934, but the character first appeared in a short story much earlier, in 1926, and has roots in Goff’s childhood. When Goff was seven, her father died from a combination of influenza

and heavy drinking (Goff would later assume his name, Travers, as her surname). A few years later, Goff’s mother attempted suicide, leaving Goff and her siblings to depend on their Great Aunt Ellie, who by all accounts shared key characteristics with Mary Poppins – most notably an unflinching practicality and no-nonsense attitude (and a parrot-headed umberella).

What’s so special about Mary Poppins is that she combines practicality and a distaste for whimsy with a touch of magic and a whiff of mysticism. Travers was fascinated by astronomy and mystics throughout her life, and that comes across in her books. They feature newborns who can converse with sparrows and hear the wind talking, but within a few weeks, lose the ability to understand. Mary Poppins is “The Great Exception,” the only one who hasn’t forgotten. She’s still in touch with that otherworldly, mystical side that allows her to chat with dogs and float on the wind. Much like how Peter Pan is the boy who never grows up, Mary Poppins is the adult who never forgets.

When Disney set out to make a movie in 1964 – after a nearly 20-year struggle to secure the rights from Travers – the writers decided that the books, while splendidly fun, were too episodic to adapt directly. Mary Poppins needed a clear reason to come and go. In a process now loosely depicted in the 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks, the creators decided Mary Poppins would come to ‘heal’ the Banks family, to bring neglectful parents closer to their children.

Mary Poppins was a huge success for Disney, won five Academy Awards, and remains widely loved – even if not by Travers herself. She was famously displeased with the film (particularly the animated dancing penguins), so much so that when Cameron Mackintosh approached her in 1993 about making a musical, she agreed on the condition that no one who worked on the film would be involved. Unfortunately, Travers died in 1996 before she could see the musical realized. Book writer Julian Fellowes kept the Banks family’s struggles, as their story resonated all too well, but also hewed more closely to the darker, wackier elements of the books. So the musical brings back Mrs. Corry and her gingerbread stars; Miss Andrew’s face off with Mary Poppins; and statues coming to life in the park.

What any version of Mary Poppins retains, however, is the most important: a magic of the everyday. She takes mundane things like cleaning a mess or walking in the park and makes them new again, simply by changing our perspective on them. Yes, she can pull an impossible number of things from a bag, yes she can fly with an umbrella, but these are parlor tricks, distractions from the real magic she’s performing. What’s key in each experience she creates and then vehemently denies, is that she ensures we will never look at the park or the rooftop the same way again. It’s as simple as it is wonderful; a new perspective is all and everything it takes to send Mr. and Mrs. Banks running toward their kids, to get them to see the everyday magic of flying a kite as a family.

– Emily Sorensen, Dramaturg

CONTEXT GUIDE

The Mary Poppins

Original CastAlbum

MARY POPPINSMuch sterner than she appears in the movie, Mary

Poppins is the quintessential British nanny: prim,

proper, and allergic to nonsense. She’s not supposed

to be pretty—Travers sent illustrator Mary Shepard

a wooden Dutch doll for inspiration, and we can see

that in her thin body, dark hair, rosy cheeks, pursed

mouth, and upturned nose (most useful for sniffing

in disapproval and acting superior, both of which

Mary Poppins excels at). Nonetheless, Mary Poppins

is also quite vain and is constantly eyeing herself in

mirrors and shop windows. She tends to come and go

in extravagent ways—blown by the wind, carried by a

kite, soaring into space on a magical merry-go-round, and coming down as a shooting star.

BERT OR THE MATCH-MANBert—or “Herbert Alfred for Sundays”—appeared in the very first Mary Poppins

short story, “Mary Poppins and the Match-Man,” in which a young Mary Poppins

goes for afternoon tea with the Match-Man in one of his chalk sidewalk drawings.

An adapted version of the story appears in the first Mary

Poppins book, in a chapter called “The Day Out.” Bert

only appears briefly in some of the other books; his role was greatly expanded for the film and combined with a chimney sweep

who shows up in Mary Poppins in the Park.

When creating the musical, book writer Julian Fellowes

(now famous for writing Downton Abbey) went back to the P. L.

Travers books for inspiration. Drawing from several, the stage

musical also features a variety of characters that didn’t appear

in the film. Here is a look at some of the literary counterparts.

Page 25: DISNEY AND CAMERON MARY POPPINS - Olney …olney theatre center mary poppins disney and cameron mackintosh’s a musical based on the stories of p.l. travers and the walt disney filmolneytheatre.org/images/pdfs/MPOP_PROGRAM.pdf ·

MARY POPPINS

MISS ANDREWOtherwise known as “The Holy Terror,” Miss Andrew was Mr. Banks’ nanny when he was growing up. In Mary Poppins Comes Back,

Miss Andrew arrives for a visit with her pet lark in tow. Miss Andrew is a formidable bully of a woman who manages to insult everything and everybody. Mary Poppins

quickly puts her in her place. Miss Andrew reutrns in Mary Poppins and the House Next

Door and moves into the house beside the Banks’. This time she brings a little boy,

Luti, with her as a servant and student, and he befriends Jane and Michael.

MRS. CORRYMrs. Corry is an old ageless woman with a

magical gingerbread shop. Mary Poppins takes the Banks children for a visit in the first book. There, they meet Mrs. Corry—whose fingers

become candy when she snaps them off—and her

two daughters, Annie and Fannie. They stock up on gingerbread wrapped in paper stars. Later

that night, Jane and Michael see Mrs. Corry and Mary Poppins glueing the stars to the sky while

Annie and Fannie hold a ladder.

NELEUSAccording to Greek mythology, Neleus is the son of

Poseidon, God of the Sea, who abandons Neleus before

he’s even born. Mary Poppins Opens the Door features

a chapter called “The Marble Boy” in which a statue

of Neleus in the park comes to life and begins playing.

His absence creates a wild goose chase, with the Park

Keeper’s job on the line. When Neleus reappears on his

plinth, no longer naked but wrapped in Mary Poppins’ coat, everyone is much relieved.

Helen Lyndon Goff (later P.L. Travers) is born to parents Margaret and Travers Goff.

Travers Goff dies of Tuberculosis.

Margaret Goff attempts to take her own life. The family moves in with Great Aunt Ellie, a key inspiration for the character of Mary Poppins.

The character of Mary Poppins first appears in a short story, “Mary Poppins and the Match-Man” in which a young Mary Poppins meets Bert the Match-Man and they go for afternoon tea in one of his chalk sidewalk drawings.

The first Mary Poppins book is published, introducing the Banks family.

Mary Poppins Comes Back is published.

Walt Disney first attempts to get the rights to make a Mary Poppins movie. P.L. Travers refuses, not wanting her literary creation turned into a “silly, smiling cartoon.”

Mary Poppins Opens the Door is published.

Mary Poppins in the Park is published.

Spurred by dwindling book royalties, Travers agrees to give Disney the rights to make a Mary Poppins film, as long as she has script approval. She is notoriously picky and difficult to work with during the film’s creation.

Mary Poppins from a to Z is published with 26 adventures, one for each letter.

Disney’s iconic Mary Poppins film is released to rave reviews. It goes on to garner five Academy Awards, including one for star Julie Andrews. Travers weeps during the premiere and is especially appalled by the animation sequence.

Three additional Mary Poppins books are published: Mary Poppins in the Kitchen, Mary Poppins in Cherry Tree Lane and Mary Poppins and the House next Door.

Cameron Mackintosh asks Travers for the rights to make a stage musical. She agrees on the condition that no one from the film be involved and all of the writers be British.

Travers dies at age 96.

The musical opens in the West End featuring new music and an expanded cast of characters drawn from the books.

A production of the musical opens on Broadway.

Saving Mr. Banks, a fictionalized version of the making of the Mary Poppins film, is released. The film depicts Disney persuading Travers to give him the rights to make the movies intertwined with scenes based on Travers’ childhood.

Olney Theatre Center produces Mary Poppins.

A new Disney film, Mary Poppins returns, is scheduled for release, starring Emily Blunt (into the Woods, The Devil Wears Prada) and Lin Manuel-Miranda (of Hamilton fame). Director Rob Marshall says he plans to draw from the other seven books of the series for material, and Blunt’s portrayal of the character will be closer to what’s in the books.
