We become totally identified with what we do, trapped in a narrow definition of ourselves. One mistake at work, on the ball diamond, or with a business associate and our world collapses. State of Self-Consciousness Disidentification is the skill of consciously separating yourself from your performance. This skill gives you the power to intervene in how you are describing yourself - it breaks the claim of over identification with an event , a mistake, or a disappointing failure. You can be unhappy with your behaviour, the phone call, the report, etc., but o.k. with yourself. "We are dominated by everything with which our self becomes identified. We can control and dominate everything from which we are disidentified." In a nutshell, disidentification is a deliberate letting go of your feelings, your actions and your thoughts. Some consciousness disciplines call this skill developing the 'witness level' - being able to see yourself impartially. It releases you from the negative power of whatever is pulling you down. GUIDELINES FOR DISIDENTIFICATION Follow these simple steps to work on disidentification. 1. Get in touch with what is tying you up (Rationally, Emotionally, Physically, Beliefs, Behaviour) 2. Take three deep breaths- Belly Breathing, or Meditative Breathing 2. Tell yourself - "I am not my _______ (sickness, injury, lost promotion, anger, anxiety etc.) 4.Disidentify - visualize seeing yourself from a distance and repeat, "I am not my _______ " 5. Act as if you have succeeded in letting go of the particular feeling, event or thought.
