Water softenerIn order to achieve good cleaningresults, the dishwasher needs to

operate with soft water. Hard waterresults in the build-up of calciumdeposits on crockery and in thedishwasher.Mains water with a hardness levelhigher than 0.7 mmol/l (4 d - Germanscale) needs to be softened. This takesplace automatically in the integratedwater softener.

The water softener must be filled withdishwasher salt for reactivation.

The dishwasher must beprogrammed to correspond to thewater hardness in your area.

Your local water authority will be ableto advise you of the water hardness

    level in your area.

Where the water hardness fluctuatese.g. between 1.4 - 3.1 mmol/l (8 - 17 dGerman scale) always programme thedishwasher to the higher value(3.1 mmol/l in this example).

In the event of a fault, it will help theservice technician if you know thehardness of your local water supply.

    Filling the salt reservoir

If the water in your area is very softand constantly lower than 0.7 mmol/l(4 d) you do not need to adddishwasher salt. The water softener must, however, still be programmed to correspondto the water hardness level in yourarea. (The salt indicator light will stillcome on, but should be ignored).

Important: Before filling the saltreservoir with dishwasher salt for thefirst time, you must fill it with approx.2 litres of water to enable the salt todissolve. Once the dishwasher hasbeen used, there is always sufficientwater in the reservoir.

, Inadvertently filling the saltreservoir with powder or liquiddishwasher detergent always leadsto serious damage to the watersoftener. Make sure you have pickedup the correct packet of dishwashersalt before filling the salt reservoir!

, Only use special coarse graineddishwasher salt for reactivation. Donot use other salts such as cookingsalt, agricultural grade or grittingsalt. These may contain insolubleadditives which can impair thefunctioning of the water softener.

^ Remove the lower basket andunscrew the salt reservoir cap.

^ Fill the reservoir with approx. 2 litres

    of water (first use).

^ Place the funnel provided over thesalt reservoir and carefully fill with salt

until the reservoir is full. The saltreservoir holds approx. 2 kg of saltdepending on the brand used.

As the salt reservoir is filled, displacedwater will overflow.

^ Clean any excess salt from aroundthe reservoir opening and then screwthe cap on again firmly.

^ Run the "Pre-wash" programme im-mediately to remove any traces ofsalt water from the cabinet.

, Inadvertently filling the rinse aidreservoir with powder or liquiddishwasher detergent alwayscauses serious damage to thereservoir. Only pour rinse aidformulated for domesticdishwashers into the reservoir.

Alternatively, it is possible to use

Household vinegar with a max. 5%acid content

    or

Liquid citric acid up to 10% acidcontent.

The resulting rinsing and drying qualitywill not, however, be as good as whenrinse aid is used.

There is no need to rinse items underrunning water.

, Do not wash items soiled withash, sand, wax, lubricating greaseor paint in the dishwasher. Ash doesnot dissolve and is distributed in thewash cabinet. Wax, sand, lubricating

grease and paint cause damage tothe dishwasher.

Crockery can be loaded anywhere inthe baskets, but the following notesshould be observed:

^ Do not place crockery and cutleryinside other pieces where they maybe concealed.

^ Load the crockery so that water canaccess all surfaces. This ensures thatit is properly cleaned.

^ Make sure that all items are securelypositioned.

^ Hollow items such as cups, glasses, pans, etc. must be inverted in the

champagne glasses, should beplaced in the centre of the basket toensure better water coverage.

^ Deep based items should be placedat an angle so that water can run offthem freely.

^ The spray arms must not be blockedby items which are too tall or hangthrough the baskets. If in doubt, test for free movement bymanually rotating the spray arms.

^ Make sure that small items do not fallthrough the holders in the baskets.Small items, e.g. lids, should

therefore be placed in the cutlery trayor cutlery basket.

Some foodstuffs may contain naturaldyes, e.g. carrots, tomatoes orketchup. Plastic items in thedishwasher may discolour if largequantities of these foodstuffs findtheir way into the appliance on the

Items not suitable fordishwashers: Wooden cutlery and crockery or

items with wooden parts: these maydiscolour and fade. The glue used inthese items is not dishwasher-proofand wooden handles may comeloose after being washed in adishwasher.

Craft items, antiques, valuable vasesand decorative glassware are also

not suitable for dishwashers. Plastic items which are not heat

resistant. The high temperatures inthe dishwasher may cause them tomelt or lose shape.

Copper, brass, tin and aluminiumitems may discolour or become matt.

Colours painted over a glaze mayfade after a number of washes.

Clouding may occur on glasses afterfrequent washing. Do not washglassware containing lead crystal ina dishwasher.

    We recommend:

When purchasing new crockery andcutlery, make sure they aredishwasher-proof.

There are no standard guidelines forwashing glassware. When in doubt, wash glassware by hand.

If delicate glassware is washed in thedishwasher ensure that only very lowtemperatures are used (seeprogramme chart). This will reducethe risk of clouding.

Cleaning the water inlet filterA filter is incorporated in the screwconnection of the valve on the water

inlet hose. The filter must be cleanedwhen dirty, otherwise insufficient waterflows into the wash cabinet.

, The plastic housing of the waterconnection contains an electricalcomponent. It must not be dipped inwater.

    Recommendation

If the mains water contains a largenumber of insoluble substances, werecommend fitting a large-area filter inthe connection between the stopcockand the water inlet hose threadedunion. This filter is available from theMiele Spares Dept.

    Cleaning the filter:

^ Disconnect the dishwasher from themains supply (switch off at the mainssocket, pull out the plug , switch offthe appropriate circuit at the fuse boxor withdraw the mains fuse).

    ^ Turn off the stopcock.

    ^ Unscrew the inlet hose.

^ Carefully remove the rubber seal.

^ Withdraw the filter using pointedpliers and rinse clean under runningwater.

^ Replace the filter and seal, makingsure they are sitting correctly.

^ Reconnect the inlet hose to thestopcock, making sure it goes oncorrectly and is not cross-threaded.

^ Turn on the stopcock gradually to testfor leaks. If there is a leak, the inlethose might not be on securely, or itmay have been screwed on at anangle. Unscrew and reconnect the

    water inlet valve correctly.
