PUBLIC HEALTH: A PRIMER

• Public health is the practice of protecting and improving the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection and control of infectious diseases.

• A core function of public health is assessment which includes disease surveillance

WHAT IS DISEASE SURVEILLANCE?o A surveillance program that significantly reduces

the burden of and time required to address public health threats

o An efficient surveillance system is a crucial factor in identifying, monitoring and tackling outbreaks of infectious diseases

o electronic health records, disease registries, vital statistics, electronic lab reporting, emergency department visits, ambulance call data, school absenteeism, prescription pharmacy sales, serology, etc.

How do you go with the flow?

Page 10: Disease surveillance

Instructions - Activity 1

1. Select your players on who you would want to be a part of your disease surveillance eco-system

2. Order them by who you would use or talk to first when performing your day to day disease surveillance activities

3. Create new players using blank pieces of paper if not all your ideal players are available

4. Be creative in building your eco-system. Think of everyone who should be a part of it.

Instructions - Activity 2

1. Take sheets of paper and in each sheet write down a step that represents your IDEAL workflow for disease surveillance

2. On the wall or the table, order each step as you would implement them

3. Be creative! Think outside the box. You’re the boss. Current policies do not apply here. Just because it is a policy, does not mean it is the best method of doing something.

4. Compare with the players in your eco-system

Prioritize the Gaps

1.Top priority - we’re almost at a showstopper

2.Second priority - pretty high, but we can live without it. . .for now

3.Third priority - important, but won’t matter much if we don’t address the first and second priorities first

Pick your team!

Page 18: Disease surveillance

Pick your team! This is going to be like the White Elephant game (except you can’t steal players, you’re stuck with who you have):

1.Select a number2.There are only a certain number of public

health/non-public health players to choose from for your team

3.Person with the lowest number (ex: 1) gets to choose first, followed by the person with the second lowest (ex: 2) and so on

Page 19: Disease surveillance

Now that you have your team. . .

Your syndromic surveillance system is alerting you that something is going on. With your current team and only this graph as information, tackle the following questions:

1. What do you think may be going on?2. Based on what you think is going on, how would

you respond to the incident with the limited team members you have?

3. How would you mitigate the impact of the incident?4. Who or what would you have liked to have to help

you with this event?
