Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and  Potiphar, anofficer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian,  hadbought him from the  Ishmaelites who had brought him downthere. The  Lord  was with Joseph, and he became a successfulman, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master (v. 1-2).

In two verses we see a dramatic shift in how we expect

Joseph's life to look and how it really is because of

God's presence.

Where in your life can you point to God's faithfulness

despite hard circumstances?

But he refused and said to his master's wife, “Behold, because of me mymaster has no concern about anything in the house, and  he has puteverything that he has in my charge. He is not greater in this house than Iam, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you arehis wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and  sin against God?”(v.8-9).

Though v. 8 says Joseph is addressing his "master's

wife", Joseph recognizes his true master is God not

Potiphar.

Who or what in your life do you ascribe Lordship to

other than God?

How does viewing God as his ultimate master change

Joseph's response to this temptation?

And Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, the place wherethe king's prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison. But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave himfavor in the sight of the keeper of the prison (v.20-21).

As a slave, Joseph has no defense in court or legal

status, so whatever Potiphar says goes.

When temptation and sin approches you, how do you respond?

If you deeply believed they weren't your real masters and had

no say over you, how would you act differently?

Jesus experienced real slavery to the consequences of

sin so you don't have to and walks with you through

hardship now. How does that encourage your heart

today?

Pray

For perseverance in hardship and a deeper experience

of God's faithfulness in your life.

For strength to respond to temptation like Joseph

because you know realize your true master is Jesus, not

sin.

For hope despite your circumstances. Because Jesus

was tried with no defense and experienced separation

and silence from God, you have his presence no matter

what you go through, just like Joseph.
