My student wants to be an intern...
Wonderful! Chances are, if the student interns for a company, they will be more
successful when it is time to graduate, and many students are hired by the em-
ployers after completing their education.
What are the requirements? Student must be in good standing with 5 or less unexcused absences in a
semester (2 quarters). The student should be responsible and mature, as
they are the best representation of CV-TEC. We will check with the following staff
for recommendations:
Career and Technical Teacher
Technical Reading and Writing Teacher
CV-TEC Guidance Counselor
Home School Guidance Counselor
Parents (If applicable)
What do I do? Teachers are responsible for creating a Training Plan with the Employer/Mentor,
and approving the application and student agreement. Details of how to complete
are inside this brochure.
All time sheets should be turned in weekly to the Student Services Coordinator
directly by the student.
Champlain Valley Educational Services CV-TEC 2016
Overview of Process
Student Student completes an application for work experience and signs it, with some indication of where the student would like to intern.
Teacher
Teacher signs the application if he or she agrees the student is ready to participate in work experience and the student is appropriately trained in all safety and procedural protocols for the work experience the student is applying for.
Student Services Coordinator
If the potential worksite is not yet an approved worksite, or does not have a current Memorandum of Agreement with Champlain Valley Educational Services, the Student Services Coordinator must visit the site to make sure it is safe and that the student will be sufficiently supported.
Employer/Mentor
All potential mentors/employers are advised that the Worker’s Compensa-tion Board highly recommends that employers carry worker’s compensa-tion for all interns—paid or unpaid. *Mentors/employers and students are notified that CVES has a 30 hour cap for most unpaid internships. After 30 hours, employers may hire the student for a cooperative work experience, or terminate the work experience. A student can then pursue an internship with another company. The employer can also seek out a different student to intern in the same capacity.
