Jimmy Burghardt is a Sports Specialist with DFMWR, Community Recreation Division who coordinates sporting events for the FS/AMR/TAMC military intramural program for the Army. He is always willing to go the extra mile with his outstanding and caring attitude towards the Soldiers, Family Members, and co-workers to ensure everyone is happy.

Christina (Tina) Macmiller is the Stables Manager for DFMWR, Community Recreation Division, Wheeler Stables. She is a very hard working, honest and

Everyone is invited to join us for a fun filled summer! This year’s summer reading program will be held from June 15 through July 17. Registration is mandatory and will begin June 8. The reading age groups are: children ages 3-5, 6-12, teens (ages 13-18) and adults. Weekly story times will also be offered at each library at 10 am. Go to your nearest library weekly for your prize and join us for entertaining programs. The libraries will also offer the following programs at each library every week. All programs begin at 3 pm.

SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2009RACE STARTS AT 6:45 AM

Test your endurance with the Army Hawaii 10-Mile Race around Wheeler. The event is free for Active Duty Soldiers and costs $8 for all other eligible runners. Anyone who wants an event T-shirt can purchase when registering for an additional $10.

This race is open to Active Duty Soldiers, Retired Soldiers, National Guardsmen, Army Reservists and their adult Family Members (18 and older), other military members as well as DOD and AAFES civilians working or living on an Army installation in Hawaii.

This event is also a qualifier for Active Duty Soldiers interested in representing Team Army Hawaii in the Army Ten Miler taking place October 4, 2009 in Washington D.C. Think you’ve got what it takes to run with the big dogs? There’s only one way to find out!

• All classes are taught by certified Red Cross water safety instructors.

• Skill levels 1-6, parent/toddler, adult beginner and private swim lessons are all available.

• Toddler/Pre-School (3-5 years old) programs concentrate on water adjustment skills, classes are by age level and progression. Requires in water participation of a parent or other adult who is responsible for the child. This course does not teach children to be accomplished swimmers or to survive in water.

• Registration is on a first come, first serve basis, children must be registered with CYSS before registering for these programs.

• Schedule is subject to change upon instructor availability.

• Cost: $35 for eight 30-minute classes per session, $40 for eight 45-minute classes per session or nine 30-minute classes per session, and $50 for nine 45-minute classes per session.

ARMY FAMILY COVENANT/BLUE STAR CARD/KMC

The Blue Star Card is a FMWR deployment discount and activity card for Spouses of deployed Soldiers. The card offers everyday discounts at FMWR facilities, free childcare options and access to special events and activities. Blue Star Cards are available and valid through the duration of deployment.

If you are eligible* for a Blue Star Card, bring a copy of your Soldier’s deployment orders, along with your military ID to Army Community Service (ACS) on Schofield Barracks, or fill out an application online at www.bluestarcardhawaii.com and then visit ACS to pick up your card. Make sure to submit your email address when signing up for your Blue Star Card so you can be emailed with the latest discounts, events, and activities for card holders.

* To be eligible, Spouses of Army combat deployed active duty/reserve/national guard Soldiers/DA Civilian employees must be stationed in Hawaii, deployed for at least six months, and receive hazardous duty pay. Spouses of Soldiers deployed for less than six months may also qualify.

Preschool Enrichment Program @ SGT Yano Library Oogles n Googles will present “Traffic Safety” on May 13 and “Pets, Pets, Pets” on June 10 at 10 am at the SGT Yano Library. These programs are open to pre-school age children, 3-5 years old.

Afterschool @ SGT Yano Library Children ages 6-12 are invited to join us to hear stories from Asia and the Pacific on Wed., May 6, 3-3:30 pm at SGT Yano Library. This is a free program and registration is not required.

Young Readers Book Club @ SGT Yano Library Elementary age children and their parents are invited to read books and participate in a book discussion at the library. The club will meet on Thursdays at 5:30 pm. Lions at Lunchtime by Mary Pope Osborne will be the topic on May 7 and The Borrowers by Mary Norton will be

CHILD, YOUTH AND SCHOOL SERVICES/SKIES UNLIMITED

The SKIES Program encompasses instructional programs and classes designed to complement and support the experiences of military children. The goal of the SKIESUnlimited Program is to ensure predictability and consistency in the availability, affordability and quality of instructional classes offered. The programs are designed for the students to expand their knowledge, be inspired, explore, and acquire skills. Some classes offered include:

Kenpo Karate - 5-18 yr. olds, $35 per month, classes held at Ft Shafter, Aliamanu and Schofield Barracks. (family discount available)

Tae Kwon Do - 6-18 yr. olds, $35 per month, classes held at Schofield Barracks. (family discount available)

Little Ninja - 3-5 yr. olds, $35 per month, classes held at Schofield Barracks and AMR. (family discount available)

Tutoring Services at Schofield Barracks - Kindergarten-High School: $35 per month, three types of tutoring available all summer: 1) Special needs students; 2) Students needing help with general subjects 3) Students who want to excel over the summer.

Soccer Academy - 6-18 yr. olds, $40 per month. Classes will be closed Jul-Sept 2009 for team soccer and resume Oct 2009.

Spanish Classes at Schofield Barracks - Kindergarten-5th grades or 6th-12th grades; $35 per month.

Families don’t forget our off-post discounts available free to all CYS Services members & SKIES members. Pick up cards at either the AMR or SB Registration Offices. Available Classes: Driver’s Education, Gymnastics (2 locations to choose from), Cheerleading, Music and Voice, and Horseback Riding. Blue Star Card may not be used for off-post discounts.

Free Babysitting Classes for ages 11 3/4 to 18 yrs old and CPR Classes for ages 12 3/4 to 18 yrs old. All classes meet Garrison Policy Memorandum USAG-HI-34 for babysitting on post in Hawaii. Classes at Schofield Bks are as follows: May, June 10 & 20, July 17 & 18, Aug 21 & 22 and Sept 4 & 5. Classes at AMR are as follows: July 24 & 25 and Aug 28 & 29. Enroll at either CYS Services Registration Office.

For Dance, Theatre, Cooking, Art, RockSchool, & Hula, May-Aug 2009, semester families who would like to enroll, telephone SKIES at 655-9818 to enroll. Enrollment is open now, 7:30 am – 3 pm via phone only for open spaces. Spaces are limited and are on a first come first serve basis. Don’t forget we offer Dance, Theatre and RockSchool at the Aliamanu Military Reservation (AMR) Youth Center. Please remember spaces are very limited for 2-6 year olds. Children must be members of CYSS or enrolled in SKIES to receive a space. A 4 month contract is required for all classes. Blue Star Card benefit applies.

Guidelines for classes being offered monthly are as follows: Enroll and pay prior to the first day of the month at any CYS Registration Office, CDC or SAS Center. Blue Star Card benefit applies to all monthly offered classes.

Army MuseumsTropic Lightning MuseumSchofield Barracks In the early years of the 20th century, Battery

Randolph mounted the largest coast-artillery guns in the entire Pacific, and served as a

first line of defense against an enemy attack on Oahu.

Today, this historic site is home to the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii, telling its’ story through unique models, rarely seen photomurals, historic videos, and artifacts. The Changing Gallery now features a new exhibit entitled “An Old Soldier’s Legacy: A World-Class Museum.” The exhibit is a tribute to Major General Herbert E. Wolff, USA (Ret), founder of U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii. The temporary exhibit includes historical photos of Battery Randolph and Ft. DeRussy. Also, mark your calendar for the Living History Day event Sat, May 16 from 10 am to 3 pm, located on the lawn in front of the museum.
