Placement of students in grade 9…
• After students are accepted at a high school, they will be asked to select their courses, including the course types: Academic, Applied, Locally Developed
• The Grade 8 teacher will make recommendations• The high school guidance staff will review choices and
recommendations• There is an Exchange of Information meeting for all
students• If there are concerns about course types chosen, the
parent is contacted and advised• Parents have the final say as to which type of course the
student will take, but we suggest a discussion with the high school guidance counsellor if you have questions or concerns

• Students can start or complete their 40 hours of community service in the summer after graduating from grade 8

Summer Transition Course for Grade 8 Students
• The course is offered at 30 of our high schools• It allows students to get familiar with their new school,
make friends, meet staff, before September• The course is coded as HIF1O1 – it covers, literacy, numeracy
and health and physical education; it also introduces students to grade 9 activities in myBlueprint (an educational planner)
• It is worth 1 credit toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and fulfils the Group 3 requirement
• It is not mandatory, but highly recommended• Students should take this course at the high school they plan
to attend• It runs through the month of July• Information for the course will come from the high school
