4 Discovering March February 2014

ebruary this year makes me nervous. Normally we would be reflecting on a cold winter and looking forward to spring but the winter has been mild and I’m wondering if we might be in for an icy blast in February. The old rhyme goes ‘February brings the rain, Thaws the frozen lake again’ but so far not much frozen lake. February is also known as ‘February Fill Dyke’ due to the usual expected amount of rain but surely we’ve had enough rain this winter?

Valentine’s Day‘When February birds do mate,

You may wed and never dread your fate’

In medieval days it was believed the birds began to pair on 14 February which is the origin of the custom of exchanging Valentine tokens. Traditionally Plum Shuttles were eaten on Valentine’s Day which were dough buns, shaped like a weaver’s shuttle made with currants and/or caraway seeds. And thinking about our March geese there is an old proverb:

‘On Candlemas Day, a good Goose will layBut on Valentine’s Day, any Goose will lay.’

(Candlemas Day is the 2nd February)

When I say old proverbs, obviously these are some hundreds of years old, but when I visited Jamie Jordan of Fossils Galore in March I realised how short a time humans have actually been on earth. He has fossils from this area going back millions of years. It was great to see so many children and young people enjoying finding out about fossils and dinosaurs in his free museum. My purpose was to get him to look at a round object, slightly larger than a tennis ball, that had nobbles like a hand grenade all over. It was found in the chalk of Sussex Downs and for years had been on my bedside table but I noticed it was splitting and growing a sort of yellow fungus. The child part of me desperately wished it was a dinosaur egg but it did make me nervous as it was growing and splitting on its own. Who could help me? Jamie to the rescue. He diagnosed it as a Marcosite (a kind of Pyrite) and that within the sphere was Fool’s Gold (as it says, looks like gold but most certainly isn’t – it is crystal and you can see lovely examples in Fossils Galore). He did say that it was giving off sulphuric acid and not to breath it in – oh dear I’d just removed it from my bedside. So it is now at Fossils Galore to be sealed so it doesn’t dissolve into dust or give off fumes and I am now a real fan of Fossils Galore and have every intention on going on one of their Fossil Hunts which are all year round but I shall wait until better weather! It is utterly amazing what we have in March. Who would think we have someone who can recognise obscure fossils and date them? I’m glad we named the magazine Discovering March as I just keep on ‘Discovering’. Please email me and tell me about anything that you have found out about March that we can publicise. We have so much to offer in the town and everyone should have the opportunity to find out about these things.Have a great February and let’s hope it is snowdrops and sun rather than mud, rain or snow! But at last spring is well and truly on the way now.....

Council and Fenland District Council

up their time to make sure we have the best Christmas light display in Fenland. The Lions, Rotary, Air Cadets and many others make the town what it is.

What would you like to change or develop in your time in office?I would like to see the speed limit on Wimblington Rd down from 40mph to 30mph and for all roads near schools go down to 20mph.

Final thoughts...We have a beautiful Park in the centre of March with a river running through it. Wouldn’t it be nice to see children playing rather than them sitting in their houses playing on computer games. Rob believes that if we can, it is important to shop locally more often to try and support and keep our local shops open.

Rob sits on the Licensing Committee, the Conduct Committee and the Tourism Board for Fenland District Council.

How long have you lived in March? I was born in March and have lived here all my life.

Why did you want to become a Councillor?I wanted to give something back to my town.

Who is your role model? My grandfather Fred and my father Peter Skoulding who was also a councillor.

What do you feel is your greatest achievement as a Councillor? It’s not a question for me, now, or one I ever particularly think about. As a town councillor we have limited possibilities anyway but I see the role very much as succeeding in small things which, over time, help individuals, neighbourhoods and the town. I talk to people, constantly, am asked to help, on a regular basis, and try always to find a resolution to the issue. What may be a small matter for me to help resolve may well be the most important thing, at that moment, for the person who contacts me.What may be my greatest achievement today will be something else next week and something different the following week. That’s the nature of communities, and community politics, its constantly evolving, constantly changing.I am keen we get a reduction in speed limits along many roads in March- and especially outside of local schools. And I long for the day when those roads alongside rivers are all made much safer. I also hope to see, shortly, March might more in charge of its own destiny through the adoption of the March Town Plan.

What do you think is March’s strongest asset?I think the events we have and the people behind the scenes like The Summer festival committee and the volunteers to help the weekend go smoothly, The Christmas lights committee and helpers, especially Mick and Sue Beer giving

S&GRecipe of the monthEasy Vegetable Hot pot (and other recipes!)

The winter is a great time for using vegetables in dishes and to add warmth to a meal. What can be better than a tasty casserole of fresh vegetables? The beauty of this recipe is you can use more or less what veg you like choosing from root vegetables, such as carrots, swede, turnips and parsnips and to add flavour, leeks and onions. Pearl barley (literally pence per packet which will do for several hot pots) will add bulk but you can also use lentils and pasta – left over pasta is great for this. Left over cooked rice will also add bulk.

1. Depending on how many you want to feed, use a quantity of chopped vegetables from the above list. For an average family say two large carrots, one small parsnip and one medium turnip or small swede (remember swede has a strong flavour so don't over use).

2. Fry the vegetables lightly in oil and then put into a large oven proof casserole pot. Season well with salt and pepper.

3. You can add pasta, pearl barley or lentils (remember to follow instructions on packet for these but generally speaking they will cook with the hot pot).

4. Cover the vegetable mixture with vegetable stock or water mixed with a little (dessert spoon) of flour. Cook on 150 degrees for about an hour or so – check after 20 mins that there is enough liquid in it as pearl barley or lentils will absorb water and you may need to add more water at this stage. Fan ovens too can be quite fierce in cooking so you may need to adjust the temperature downwards.

Check that the vegetables and barley or lentils or whatever you have used to bulk it up are cooked.Serve with warmed bread (you can use slightly stale bread toasted and drizzled with olive oil)

Tasty VariationsVariations to this recipe include instead of cooking as a hot pot, partially cook the veg and then put in a greased pie dish and cover with pastry – ready made if you like! Bake for however long it takes the pastry to cook. You can also turn it into 'au gratin' by cooking vegetables and then topping with grated cheese (you can use left overs) and grilling. All nourishing, comparitively cheap and you can use some left overs as well as lovely fresh veg.

treasure hunt for adults and youngsters needs to be organised involving ‘shoppers’ having to enter business premises to take part. Cath Collins mentioned that, in answer to a Facebook page question, some shoppers in March did not do any Christmas shopping because ‘ there was nothing in March worth buying for a gift’. It was felt that the local population were not fully aware of the goods and services available in March. Chamber should make an effort to develop the ‘department store’ concept and get the message out there of what is available. Topics covered included trade fair, web site, social media, loyalty scheme and co-promoting. In order to investigate these ideas further individual members agreed to give some detailed thought and report back to Chamber.

Ideas and inspiration at March ChamberA lively group of business people from March including representatives from Discovering March, attended the January meeting where many topics were covered. There was a brief review of the Christmas Market and Christmas Lights. Points raised included absence of Christmas Lights down Dartford Rd and congestion on the High St Bridge with stalls being on both sides. It was felt that the Chamber needs to have representation on these committees if possible. Clive Gibbon outlined his role as Economic Development Officer and the support he could give Chamber, although funds were very limited. Clive also outlined a loyalty scheme in Wisbech which has 40 businesses and 400 customers signed up for. This is a one year pilot and if successful would be made available to ‘Fenland’. Ghil Pragnell introduced the idea of a ‘market’; whether it be ‘business to business’ or ‘business to customer’ was Chamber’s decision, should such an event take place. Ghil mentioned how this had taken place in Ely, St Neots and Huntingdon and had been successful. St. George’s day: Nigel Marsh indicated that with about 10,000 people coming in to March for that day Chamber should capitalise on this. A

Theft of Catalytic Converters doubles in last three yearsDear readers, Across the UK, thefts of catalytic converters from motor vehicles have more than doubled over the past three years and local reports of this type of crime continue to rise. Motorists can be left with repair bills of thousands of pounds. Thieves are ripping out the devices because they contain precious metals such as platinum and palladium. The global rise in the price of platinum has fuelled this illegal trade. Catalytic converters reduce poisonous gases from the vehicle’s exhaust system and legislation introduced in 1993 required all cars (J reg onwards) to have one. Although it is not illegal if you don’t have one; be aware that you would fail your MOT without. Further legislation that came into force on 1 October 2013 banned cash payments for scrap metal with the aim of making it easier to trace people selling stolen metal, but one of the emerging problems identified is the direct export whereby they are being exported in containers to emerging economies where they are either reused or broken down there.HOW CAN YOU PREVENT THEFT?- Catalytic converters can be uniquely marked in acid with a serial number- Motorists are advised to keep their cars in garages or park in well-lit areas- Most converters are bolted on - but they can be welded, which makes them harder to remove- Fleet owners are advised to obstruct access to high vehicles by parking cars with lower ground clearance round them- CCTV cameras should also be installed and warning notices posted up nearby

Dutch Auction

It’s said the Dutch Auction started back in the 1600s when tulip bulb sellers in Holland wanted to attract buyers. How does it work? The seller sets a starting price (today this would be the recommended retail price), then reduces the price by a set amount each hour/day. In the case of Ambiance (below), the piece of furniture starts at its original price of £170 and the price decreases by £5 each shopping day until it is sold. Owner, Linda Dexter, said: “Dutch Auctions are a lot of fun and create a lot of interest with both customers and passersby. Everyone is keen to find out what price the item will sell for, and how low that price will be”.As the tulip buyers found out, the skill is in chancing your luck on when to buy, without loosing the goods altogether !What do you think this piece of furniture will sell for?

What is a Dutch Auction?Readers can send their guess to [email protected] (or pop into Ambiance) and the first person who is nearest to the final selling price will receive a £20 Ambiance gift voucher.

(NB To qualify, any guess must be received the day before this item is sold. Only one guess per person. Auction starts on Saturday 8 February. Details of the final selling price will be given in a subsequent issue of Discovering March.)

The law of intended Living Together – Myths and Truths

Your questions answered!

Iby Melinda Smith, Member (Family Law)

t’s a commonly held belief that parties that live together for any significant length of time gain “rights” against their partner and/or theirpartner’s property and assets. People often refer to “common law” husband or wives when referring to couples living together. The actual position is that, in law, there are no automatic rights which are gained by either party when a couple simply live together. Theirposition in terms of financial provision for the other is entirely different to that of a married couple, regardless of the length of time a couple may live together. Where there are children from a relationship, there are usually ongoing maintenance obligations when the parents separate, regardless of whether the parents were married or not, and in some cases there may be sufficient assets to providefor some other financial provision for the children. However, it is more commonly the case that the main issue to be resolved in a case where couples have merely lived together is whether there isany jointly owned property and how that should be divided, or whether one of the parties has contributed sufficiently to property owned by the other to establish what is known as a beneficialinterest, meaning that they have some claim to the property even if they are not named as an owner. It can come as a shock to clients who have separated from their partner that they either have no rights against property or assets owned by the other or, where a property is owned in their sole name, that their partner may have accrued some rights in respect of that property. Such claims can often be difficult to determine, which can lead to Court applications and legal fees, which is not ideal for either party. Arguments over property and other assets

can be avoided if the intentions of the couple so far as property, assets, and general financial arrangements are concerned are set out clearly in a written agreement. It may not be the most romantic thing to talk about with your partner when you are looking at setting up home together, but the agreement can save a good deal of argument and legal fees if the relationship were to break down in the future in showing what had been intended by the parties if there is a dispute. It is not only couples who are looking at setting up home together who can enter into such an agreement. Even if a couple have been living together for any length of time, a living together or cohabitation agreement can be drawn up if both parties are happy to enter into it. Such an agreement is not an order of the Court and a party cannot be prevented from making an application to the Court in relation to property if they so wish, but the agreement can establish the intention of the parties, which is often the crux of the argument and one of the main factors whicha Court would take into consideration. If the intention is clearly set out in an agreement each party is aware of his or her position and where there is no dispute, there is no need for legal proceedings. In summary, cohabitation/living together agreements, like pre-nuptial or post-nuptial agreements, are not officially recognised in English law, but are documents which, if drawn up correctly, a Court would take serious note of in the event that there was a dispute between the parties at a later date and, on that basis, are something which all couples living together or intending to live together, should consider.

The Buffet at the New Diamond Chinese Restaurant in Station Road, March is a well kept secret but I'm going to change all that. When we first visited we could not believe that for £16 on a Friday and £17 on a Saturday you can have anything at all you like, and as much as you like from the entire a la carte menu. We thought there must be a catch but no, we chose the dishes we wanted and they came from the kitchen freshly prepared and delicious. Unlike many buffets they are not a selection of ready prepared dishes for you to help yourself from but it is the whole menu that is on offer and each and every dish is cooked for you. It is an amazing experience to have so much choice and to be able to sample as many dishes as you like. And it gives you an idea of the versatility of the food as well so that when you fancy a takeaway you can be more adventurous in your choice. So it was with great pleasure that I set out to meet the owners, manager Charlotte Wong and

A buffet fit for royalty But much enjoyed by Liz Wright, Member of the Guild ofFood Writers, at the New Diamond Restaurant

her chef husband Charlie. Their dedication and enthusiasm for producing a range of dishes that represent the very best in Chinese cookery shines

through when they talk. Charlotte is also a huge fan of March, saying it has a strong community feel. As for the chefs, well Charlie has worked in five star kitchens and each chef is hand picked for their experience and their creativity. The restaurant is spacious so when you dine you are not cramped and have plenty of space between tables. The service is fast and unintrusive. New Diamond are keen to host parties and if there is a party of more than 10 people, the host eats free. They also provide two bottles of sparkling wine. I know where I am going for my birthday in April! The take away menu is extensive and includes set meals at a

reasonable price. There is free delivery on orders over £15 in March and a £4 delivery charge for over five miles delivery.

Happy Chinese New Year!New Diamond have also created a special menu to celebrate the Chinese New Year – which this year is 31 January and introduces the Year of the Horse. This menu runs from the 31st January to the 8 February and the Starter is Siu Mei (Dim Sum), Har Kau (Dim Sum), Curry Samosa and Peking Spare Ribs – quite a selection to try. The second course is the much loved Peking Duck and the Main Course is Honey roast pork in BBQ sauce, Sweet and sour chicken, Beef with black bean sauce, Monk's vegetables and Pineapple fried rice. So you can celebrate New Year for a second time – in Chinese style.

A Valentine's Day treatCharlie has created a special Valentine's menu which has a particularly romantic secret in its starter! You'll have to come and find out for yourselves! The menu is for Starters -Duck spring rolls, Curry samosa, Oat's king prawns while the Second Course is Minced chicken with a lettuce wrap. Then comes the Main Course with the intriguingly named 'Ants climb up from the tree' – an imaginative dish with no ants but chicken, honey and sesame and uniquely displayed. Fried beef with X) sauce and Honey roast pork are also served and seasonal mixed vegetables and egg rice is the side order. The cost for this memorable meal is £14.20 per diner. Booking is advised.

A word from

your local MP Steve Barclay

It is great news that a branch of the Rainbow Savers Anglia Credit Union has opened in March. The March Rainbow Savers is run by volunteers with an aim of offering low rates on small loans. Coupled with our continuing economic recovery it is a great way to help local residents save money and I wish the best of luck to all those involved.

It’s your turn to have your say on how Fenland District Council should spend their money for the next three years. A questionnaire which gives residents the opportunity to list their spending priorities, amongst other information, is available to pick up the March @ Your Service Shop on Broad Street. Alternatively, fill out the questionnaire at www.fenland.gov.uk/yourviews2014.

I encourage the community to get behind March resident 17-year-old Lauren Kirby, who is climbing Mount Snowdon in a bid to raise money in order that she can take part in a conservation project in Africa this summer. It is great to see young people working hard to make their ambitions a reality and you can add your support at http://sponsorlaurenkirby.webs.com.

Any Mesothelioma victims locally who have been unable to get compensation because insurers or previous employers cannot be traced can now make a claim under a new government scheme. I very much welcome this long awaited breakthrough which provides 75% of the claim that would be available if paperwork had not gone missing. I voted against the Government on two aspects of the bill as I believe the insurance industry should do more to compensate mesothelioma sufferers, but overall it is a great

step forward.

We still are blighted by a number of derelict buildings in the district and I believe much more can be done to use the powers available to the council to require absentee owners to act to clean them up. Please do get in touch with your district councillor or myself if you know of derelict buildings which have been ignored and left to blight neighbouring properties.

Another issue with property is overcrowded housing let to large numbers of migrants in squalid conditions. This is a problem both for neighbouring residents who face anti social behaviour linked to such property, and to those forced to live in the overcrowded housing itself. I am therefore pleased that following a series of meetings I held with Ministers to highlight this problem, the Government has awarded £179,000 to Fenland District Council in order to tackle the specific issue of rogue landlords in the Fens.

I was delighted that Government listened to local lobbying and awarded £4.6million in funding to the College of West Anglia which will directly benefit further education students from March with the new teaching facilities. I am also pleased that representation from the business community has been acted on to ensure A14 road improvements will go ahead but without any toll.

After the Christmas break Parliament is back in full swing, including my regular meetings of the Public Accounts Committee which focuses on securing better value for money from public spending.

The new year started with a wonderful service at the Powerhouse Church in March, to mark their 17th anniversary. It was a very enjoyable occasion and a real pleasure to join Jim and Christine Macintyre in this celebration.

Your Views 2014 Draft Corporate Plan consultation

Every year, Fenland District Council asks local people to say what the Council’s priorities should be for the next three years. Your views help the Council to focus on delivering the services that really matter to you. We would be grateful if you could spare a couple of minutes to tell us what you think by filling in a questionnaire on our website. This can be found at www.fenland.gov.uk/yourviews2014. The consultation will run between Monday 6 January and Monday 10 February 2014.

Fuel theftsAnyone who has been the victim of fuel theft and has reported this to police and who are on a low income, do not have the means to pay for replacement oil , may wish to contact Isabel Edgington at Fenland District Council as they have the ability to refer to Cambridge Community Foundation who for a limited time have a small fund to help with emergency fuel payment.

Free and confidential advice about support

for adults with long-term needs and

carersA series of drop-in events has been organised to provide free and confidential information and advice to adults living with a long-term illness or disability, older people struggling with an age-related condition, and anyone providing unpaid support to adult family members or friends who could not manage without this help. The drop-in sessions are being held on the second Wednesday of the month during 2014 at March Library, City Road, March PE15 9LT. Come along any time between 10am and 1pm for a cup of tea and to find out about the support available to you.

For more information phone 01480 377616 / 01480 373220, email [email protected] or visit www.cambridgeshire.net and search “Adult Support Drop-in”.

If life sometimes feels disjointed, you have no support network, bereavement, no-one to turn to, emotional strain of a new born, relationship breakdown; feeling isolated or just need an impartial and non-judgemental person to talk to? This list is not exhaustive of the issues we support with. We have volunteers throughout the county who are willing and able to come to your home for up to 3 hours per week for a period of, up to, 6 months, to support you to build better lives for you and your family. Home-Start has grown from one scheme in 1973 to hundreds of local Home-Starts now. Home-Start helps hundreds of families nationwide each year. All our volunteers, who have parenting experience, help families with all sorts of problems from the commonplace to the overwhelming. Each volunteer is matched to the family for personalities and needs identified, from simply being listened to, to other circumstances such as accessing the local community, keeping appointments or implementing boundaries and routine with your children. To be able to access Home-Start support you need to have at least one child under the age of 5 years and be living in the East Cambs & South Fenland area. (This includes March). Home-Start is optional, so once you feel all your needs have been met, you can terminate the support.

Support last for 26 visits or 6 months, whichever comes sooner, however if other support needs are identified this timeframe may be extended. Home-Start also delivers a course to parents who have children with, or are in the investigation process of having a child with, additional needs; this is a 6 week group session workshop that offers emotional support, peer support, support for dealing with professionals and support with having a child with additional needs, including what other organisations are available for you to use. Please contact your local Home-Start for when the course will be coming to an area near you and to enrol yourself upon the course.

If you would like to call to discuss if Home-Start is for you, then please call the office on 01353 663158.

• Always walk dogs on the lead near water during periods of low temperatures. Ice does not always freeze evenly leaving weak spots, in what may appear a solid surface, plus snow will mask the water’s edge• Float a large ball in your pond so if the water freezes you can remove it and ensure your fish get enough oxygen.• Dog coats are readily available in a wide variety of sizes, colours, styles and prices. This can make a dog that becomes resistant to being walked in the cold, enthusiastic once again.• Owners of mice, guinea pigs, rats etc... as well as both indoor and outdoors birds (inc chickens, should consider covering cages/coops with a warm blanket over night to retain heat • Reflective/LED collars and accessories are

also readily available and can provide peace of mind when walking dogs off the lead in poorly lit areas or for locating the family cat that does not want to come in at night • Increase ambient temperature in reptile tanks, or move away from windows and doors• Outside guinea pigs should be moved indoors and you may want to consider moving outside rabbits into sheds/garages. • Always increase the amount of hay in your rabbits bedding area during winter. • Grit can cause contact allergies and illness if consumed, so bathe paws or protect them using paw covers/boots if this is a problem in your area.• Keep antifreeze well out of your pets reach as it tastes delicious to them, but is deadly.

A monthly feature that focuses on current financial issues. Many local Banks and Building Societies have lost their ‘in house’ adviser and few are independent. Eamonn is a fully qualified local Independent Financial Adviser.

Delivering Simple Financial Advice - That really works

A tod

Selecting the right Care Package Caring for an elderly or frail individual can be challenging. As the responsible person you want what is best for the individual – but accessing that help, having it delivered in the right way, in the right place and within budget can be a tricky affair. A good starting point would be to obtain Power of Attorney so that you can act for the individual for either or both areas of concern – their wellbeing and their financial affairs. It is important that any such arrangements are put on a proper legal footing, firstly in case things go wrong but just as importantly, data protection legislation can easily get in the way of well intentioned help. For example – it would be quite wrong of a bank or building society to discuss an individual’s financial affairs with anyone that was not legally entitled to ask for it, and the medical profession could not discuss medication, treatment or a prognosis with someone who has no right to the information. In my work as a later life adviser, much of the problem is not finding the services required, it is the paying for them. Some clients are ‘Asset Rich – Cash Poor’. This simply means that their income is not enough to afford the higher level of expenditure associated with long term care. However, sometimes they have a property that could yield funds – they just need a key with which to unlock it! Some solutions might involve Equity Release, sometimes a Care Home annuity might form part of a package. On other occasions my advice on claiming benefits, accessing specialist services and investment options is required. As a member of the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) I am fully qualified to advise in all these areas – the initial meeting is at my expense, if further work is required the associated costs will be fully explained before work commences.

Managing your money

With the possibility of interest rates rising (could they be much lower?) how might this impact on our daily lives? Those with cash deposits could reasonably expect better interest paid on their accounts, but an increase from 1% might still be less than the rate of inflation, so we need to consider comparing other investment options that have the potential to beat the rate at which prices increase. One view point being that an increase in interest rates might fuel inflation, an alternative view might be that if mortgage (or borrowing) costs increase there will be an impact on the amount of money left over to spend and the supply/demand for housing could be affected. Nobody can accurately predict how the economy might perform in future so, it is back to basics: Firstly, build an emergency fund so that the variations between income and expenditure can be addressed. Next, have a plan in which

income and expenditure is recorded, a simple book will do the trick, nothing fancy. Then, protect the things that are important to you, after insuring the home and car, don’t forget the people that provide finance and care, those that bring in the money and those that look after the house and those in it (often balancing both roles). What would happen if one or both were ill or died? Lastly, move on to accumulating for later; this might involve using tax efficient savings plans or pensions. Meanwhile, making sure plans are in place if the worst should happen which could involve having a correctly drafted Will, Power of Attorney or specialist legal advice. An Independent Financial Adviser can help guide you through the process in easy to understand stages helping you develop a financial plan that can be reviewed on a regular basis.

Some of the New Year resolutions might be a distant intention for some, but it is always possible to start financial planning now.

WILLS, LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY AND PROBATE

Advice from the expertsGraham Dack (Partner)

Dack Pearson Solicitors

Your Will is one of the most important documents you will ever sign. It enables you to obtain control over the distribution of your assets in the event of your death to benefit those you care for the most. Whilst your Will ensures your estate is wound up in accordance with your wishes an LPA ensures that a person of your choice has responsibility for dealing with your affairs should you become physically or mentally disabled in the future. A Grant of Probate is the legal authority to administer your estate according to the wishes expressed in your Will. We can take full responsibility for dealing with your affairs after you have gone, we will obtain all assets due to you, paying all outstanding bills owed by you, deal with the sale of any property and all the legal and administrative duties that need to be dealt with including pensions, insurance and the tax man. If you would like further information or wish to discuss your options feel free to contact us.

Peace of mind is phone call away.

Neale Wade

Sports Academy Following my interview last month with former Neale Wade student Lou-ise Hazel, I paid a visit to the Sports Academy at Neale Wade to find out more about the development of youth sports in March and meet with the next generation of promising sporting youngsters.

On arrival I met with P.E. teacher Ben Crosbie, who runs the Sports Academy, and he explained why the academy was set-up and its aims. “The Sports Academy was set-up seven years ago with 40 students, which has now grown to 85, and it was set-up to support the most gifted and talented sports students at Neale Wade. “Initially we started out with three sports football, rugby and netball, and we’ve now grown to include badminton and athletics. “The goal is to provide the students with the same kind of support package they would get if they were at national centres of excellence. “Part of that means we have a lot of outside agencies and speakers come in to the school and talk to the students, including Leon Baptiste (Double Commonwealth gold medallist in the 200 metres and 4x100 metres relay) and World and European kickboxing champion Gaynor Morgan.” “We’ve also had people from Cambridge University come in and talk about biomechanics (the analysis of professional athlete’s performances) and movement and how to run and move in a way that reduces the risk of injuries.” “Every year we take the students to one of the sporting excellence universities, we’ve been to Loughborough, East Anglia and Birmingham, and it allows the students to see what it’s like, and show them that if they work hard they could be studying at one of those places.” “We also organise one trip a year, we’ve taken the students to watch Arsenal and Chelsea play Champions League games, we’ve been to Twickenham to watch the Varsity rugby match (Oxford vs. Cambridge) and in May last year we

took 50 students to visit St George’s Park (The English Football Association’s national football centre), where they experienced a practical session in plyometrics (training muscle elastic strength and explosiveness), and conditioning and fitness testing led by the same sports scientist’s who work with the England Football Team.” After chatting with Ben I then met three of the academy most promising youngsters and asked them about their chosen sports and how being part of the Neale Wade Sports Academy has helped them.

I graduated from my journalism course at University Centre Peterborough in September. I’m a huge sports fan so the majority of what you’ll be reading from me will be sports based, but I would also be interested to hear any positive stories involving young people in March as for me stories like that are far too often overlooked. I would also like to add how excited I am to be joining Liz and the Discovering March team, and I look forward to continuing to report on the diverse range of sports enjoyed in March throughout the year.

andlemas on February 2nd is a traditional festival of light when candles were brought into churches to be blessed, significant in a time before electricity. It celebrates Jesus in the Temple. Candlemas marked the middle of winter and, some believed, predicted the coming weather: if sunny, that there was more winter weather to come, if cold and wet then the worst of winter was over.

Sybil Marshall writing her collection of her parents’ memories gave their picture of Victorian Fenland childhood and family life. St Valentine’s Day February 14th was looked forward to by Fenland children who had few possessions. For a penny they could buy Valentine cards with pretty verses and hearts with arrows through, or not-so-nice cards with a paper snake which popped out! As girls grew older they looked forward to receiving cards from anonymous admirers.(1)

Probably the oldest surviving English Valentine letter was sent by Margery Brew to her fiancé John Paston in Norfolk in 1477 but most printed Valentine cards were not sent until Victorian times. Victorian Valentine cards in Cambridge Folk Museum are of two kinds, the lace-trimmed with romantic verses, and the plain ‘Long Valentines’ with disrespectful verses! Traditionally cards were sent anonymously. Girls who were engaged could expect to receive gifts such as handkerchiefs and flowers on Valentine’s

Day, sometimes expensive ones. In various Cambridgeshire villages a procession of boys and girls chanted a Valentine verse in return for money or sweets. In Fenland villages it was believed if a sunny St Valentine’s day, eels would be on the run before the week ended, so eel traps were set up. Unmarried girls wore their stockings inside out to make sure of getting a husband before the harvest moon rose.(2)

The Hippodrome, March’s “new home of amusement” opened on 12th February 1929. ‘The building must be one of the finest of its kind in East Anglia, and it is evident that no expense has been spared in its construction or its equipment, the cost having run to something over £20,000. The great theatre itself has been designed on the most up-to-date lines, and has been decorated lavishly but with perfect taste...’(3)

March Twinning Association MTA has been in existence for over 20 years. It is a twinning

between St Jean de Braye, a town on the river Loire just outside Orleans in France and the town of March.

The Association aims to foster links between March and St Jean de Braye. So for example if you are in a hockey club, or a choir or interested in youth football or want to see what provision there is in St Jean de Braye for those with impaired hearing we should be able to help. We organise a trip to St Jean de Braye from March every other year lasting 3 to 4 days. We go by coach. Usually when there is a bank holiday in England so that those working or with children can go as well. During the long weekend in France members stay with French families and there is usually a full day excursion with the group. We have about 40 members. Many have been members for a long time and have established links with French friends in St Jean de Braye. We are looking for new members. You don’t have to speak French but it is helpful. More important is openness to different food and ways of doing things. Some French conversation practice can be provided for those going if there is a demand. Since people from March and the Fens – we have members from outside the town- are hosted by French people it is usual for our members to host a French guest when they visit March the coming year. We understand that this is not always possible and are always grateful for host families and hosts

if there is an emergency. During the year we have a number of fund-raising/social activities : quiz, race night, sausage and mash supper, showing of a film, BBQ and tea party. As said above we welcome all March residents and are pleased with the support given by All Saints’ Academy that has a link with a primary school in St Jean de Braye. Older students have also been able to go to St Jean de Braye on EU funded projects. Summer jobs with the town council in St Jean de Braye have been offered in the past but we need employers in March and Fenland to offer similar arrangements for French 18-25 year olds before we can participate.

We have a community website : www.mta/btck.co.uk which gives further information. We will need host families from May 29th -1st June 2014.

You don’t have to speak French but it is helpful.
