One out of every seven Texans is employed in agriculture. The top five agricultural commodities in Texas are cattle and calves, cotton, broilers (chickens), greenhouse/nursery, and dairy products. The ruby red grapefruit, the first grapefruit to be granted a U.S. Patent, was developed in Texas. The 2012 U.S. Census of Agriculture recorded 248,000 farms in Texas and a statewide net farm income of $25.3 billion. • There are 130 million acres of cropland in Texas. Agricultural products in Texas, valued at $25.3 billion in 2012, is 4th in Agricultural exports, ranked by States.
