We are certainly heading into a great developmental stage for the

Bendigo Yacht Club as outlined at the Season Opening last weekend.

Our Great Big Deck is now a reality thanks to the 50% of funds raised by members

toward its construction, headed by Mark Hawkins and Michael Anthony. We hope to have it completed by December ready for the warmer weather. Phil Mann will be

preparing the foundations and members will be laying the planks.

In preparation for the liquor license we have purchased a bar that fits nicely into the décor of the clubrooms. Although the collection was a challenge, eventually it arrived on

the back on the second trailer…..

After having been absent for a couple of weeks, I notice what a great leap forward has been made on the disabled toilet. Dan Forbes, Phil Mann and Ron Mason have obviously

been hard at work getting it up to the current stage. There is more to do including painting etc. and any assistance you can offer in this or other tasks would be greatly

appreciated. Please contact Dan Forbes direct on 0488 539 738, he will be very pleased

to hear from you.

We have two external Christmas Parties booked at the club, the first one on 16 November, from 5pm onwards. The second is 8 December from 5 pm. These functions

are great revenue raising opportunities for the club. External caterers are providing the food and the club will be selling alcohol for these events. Assistance would be

appreciated in a number of areas. As these events are for external groups may we ask that members please avoid the common room area, the BBQ area will be available for

use as usual.

Jen Coulson hosted a display at Lake Weeroona on 13 October promoting Discover Sailing for Bendigo Yacht Club. Jen spent a lot of time organising this, getting permits

from council and boats to display. Thank you to all involved in this project, it was a great success and well supported by club members.

Let us enjoy our surroundings comfortably and safely in the knowledge that we are a safe and non-discriminatory, anti-bullying and harassment free club for all members.

Looking forward to another great sailing season.

Once again we leave Winter behind us and we have a

wonderful sailing season ahead to look forward to. The

Bendigo Yacht Club held the Season Opening ceremony at

the club on Saturday the 5th of October. The weather was

overcast, but warm with a slight breeze. Our official

guests this year were: her Worship the Mayor Councillor

Margaret O’Rouke, Lisa Chesters MHR the Federal

Member for Bendigo, Chris Braden from Goulburn Murray

Water, Peter McGregor of Sasi Marketing, Adam Gristwood

from the youth program “Out There Sailing” and Jasmine

Noske from Sailability.

The morning was professionally hosted by our very own Michael Anthony with an interview

with Phillip Mann. The Mayor was introduced and told us how honoured she was to be with us

and that she had given up other speaking engagements to be at our Opening Day. Lisa

Chesters was invited to speak and she announced that our grant application was successful to

the tune of almost $10.000 which was received with a great round of applause. David Braden

spoke of the state of the lake and plans for tourism and water flow for the rivers, Peter

McGregor spoke on plans for publicising our club, Adam Gristwood told us all about “Out

There Sailing” and Jasmine Noske spoke on the role Sailability serves in our community. A

discussion of our new deck saw all the remaining planks sold and the deck now has the go

ahead to get started. Our guests were thanked and we then enjoyed an excellent lunch which

was supplied by the members.

Race time came and about 20 boats hit the water in 3 divisions for the first race of this

season. For various reasons including that our main buoy laying boat, Johnson, is out of

action, the Sailing Committee recommended

we try using one triangular coarse with only

the red buoys instead of 2 with the yellow

buoys. This made it much easier for the duty

crew to set the coarse and pack up after

racing. This seemed to work OK. Thanks to our

RO Phil Mann we were able to get 2 races in

even though it was very light in the wind

department.

A great day was thoroughly enjoyed by all who

attended.

Warren

All the available planks have been sold, thank you to those members past and

present who have made their donation and their mark on our Great Big Deck, what a fantastic result completed 3 weeks earlier than planed.

The next stage is our crowd funding program which will begin the engagement

strategy with the wider community. Get ready for some smaller donation opportunities with support from Sponsors Sasi Marketing, Mandurang Valley Wines

and Masons of Bendigo.

As a club the idea will be to push this campaign as wide and far as we possibly can, when you see how it works it will be clear that it is designed to inform the community

about what we are offering this summer.

“Out There Sailing” is the perfect way to try out sailing and have fun on the water without any long term commitment or

competitive aspect.

This program was trialled last year in ten clubs across Victoria and this year a further 10

clubs have been selected to offer the program, which Bendigo Yacht Club was selected as one.

The program is created for 12-17 year olds who are interested in trying out sailing in a

non-competitive, social and fun setting. “Out There Sailing” encourages teenagers to learn new skills and spend time with friends in a new and exciting environment. Clubs

will utilise a wide variety of boats including Dinghies, Stand Up Paddle Boards, Power boat adventures during their programs. The aim of the program is to have fun, hang out

with friends and learn new skills.

“Out There Sailing” will give teenagers the flexibility & variety they want in a fun focused setting, whilst still providing important life skills. The key aspect of this program

is to facilitate a social environment where teenagers are able to cultivate real friendships with others from their local area, whilst potentially igniting a love for sailing in the

process. Socialisation and fun both on and off the water are paramount: club culture is

inclusive of everyone and there is plenty for parents and teenagers to get involved with.

Following a successful pilot year in Victoria funded by Vichealth, the “Out There Sailing” program has also received Sport Australia funding to assist in rolling the program out

across the whole of Australia. We have been provided with funding to purchase six Stand Up Paddle Boards, synthetic grass for the foreshore (to improve the foreshore

experience) and funds to provide instructor training.

A big thank you to Gavin Excel the manager of Anaconda Bendigo and Steve Phillis for getting such a great deal together for our club on the purchase of the Stand Up paddle

boards. The challenge is now over to the training team to pull the first programs together!

The CSIRO have stated on their website that: "Changes to the

climate system have occurred and are likely to continue.

The international scientific community accepts that

increases in greenhouse gases due to human activity have

been the dominant cause of observed global warming since

the mid-20th century. Continued emissions of greenhouse

gases will cause further warming and changes in all

components of the climate system.

Australia's changing climate represents a significant challenge to individuals,

communities, governments, businesses, industry and the environment. Australia

has already experienced increases in average temperatures over the past 60 years,

with more frequent hot weather, fewer cold days, shifting rainfall patterns and

rising sea levels. More of the same is expected in the future."

How is this relevant to our Yacht Club?

According to the scientific evidence, even the best scenarios paint a dramatic picture of

changing weather patterns that will impact inland waterways by increasing the incidences of

drought occurrences and therefore the need to continually drain Lake Eppalock to replenish

dwindling water supplies in its downstream districts. A Lake Eppalock capacity level below 20

-30% would almost certainly become the norm rather than the exception. This could mean

permanent changes to the types and number of boats participating in our weekly races and

also to our much admired vista over the waters of the lake.

Add to this the very real potential for high levels of blue green algae to be present in the

lake, deterring many members from participating in sailing (or allowing their children to

participate).

While much stronger and more unpredictable winds

might appeal to some of the more adventurous

sailors, the majority of our sailors, including our

juniors and trainees, will be severely restricted by the

opportunity available to them to sail in comfortable

conditions. Add to this a predicted rise in the severity

and incidence of extremely hot weather, it seems

that the future weather conditions for all humankind,

including those of us who enjoy our recreational

sailing, will make it extremely more uncomfortable to

be outdoors than we currently experience.

Page 10: Discover Sailing Day is com · Sailing Program . Mainsheet No. 556 2 October, 2019 BENDIGO YACHT ... There Sailing” and Jasmine Noske spoke on the role Sailability serves in our

Mainsheet No. 556 10 October, 2019

Potentially devastating forest fire conditions, as already experienced in some parts of

several Australian states even this early in the fire season, will further impact on the

participation of club members due to the elevated risk of fire danger over an extended

period of the year. Our club Fire Plan will need to be constantly scrutinised and enacted

to ensure it has the capacity to guarantee the safety of members should the predicted

raised fire dangers eventuate. Access roads to and from the lake will be impacted by

any fire incidence in the adjacent area, leaving members with little choice but to

consider not attending the club on days predicted to be of severe fire danger.

Many of the club's running costs, for example the cost of fire insurances, extra water

pumping and filtration costs and updated fire fighting equipment, will rise under the

projected climate changing scenarios.

Club members should be worried about the potential for our club to cease to exist

should the predicted weather patterns eventuate as a result of changes to our climate.

If for no other reason than to save our club, it must be incumbent on us all to educate

ourselves about the causes and impacts of climate change and to do whatever possible

within our individual abilities to reduce our contributions to the problem.

We must also unite in our efforts to convince our policy makers of the need to drastically

reduce our carbon emissions footprint and thus our impact on climate change.

Let's help preserve the climate and our yacht club for our kids and grandkids, and

ensure the future world is a safe and enjoyable place to live. This will mean that they

will also have the opportunity to enjoy, as we have, the many benefits of our club.

Ron Mason.

Earlier this month a display of club yachts was held at Lake Weeroona. It’s been said that

our club is Bendigo’s best kept secret. We decided it was time to share that secret with those who stroll around Lake Weeroona on Sunday mornings. It was also a perfect time

to promote our upcoming Discover Sailing Day which is to be held next month (10 November).

It was a beautiful morning and our enthusiastic members positioned the 10 yachts at our

allotted position at the northern end of the lake. The yachts ranged in size from the little

Opti to the 26 foot Macgregor. Our Sailability friends added one of their boats too. The display created quite a bit of interest from the many who were taking advantage of the

good weather. People stopped, looked, chatted, asked questions and some took the opportunity to climb into and inspect the trailor sailor’s.

The Show & Tell display was deemed a success and it’s been suggested we try to make it

an annual event. Thankyou to everyone who brought their boats and to those that came along to add their support.

We need to promote our club in as

many ways as possible. For the club to thrive we cannot continue to be

“Bendigo’s best kept secret”.

We certainly have had a mix of conditions for the first few races of the season. Opening Day saw sailors frustrated with

extremely light winds. The following week the wind took time to settle but by the start of the second race sailors were

enjoying a good steady breeze.

The Impulses are looking good this season with Steve and

Russ sailing well. It’s believed there have been some quiet

practise sessions going on. Peter Martin surprised us on the second day of the season arriving with a navy Taser to

rival Tissa’s green machine. With Oscar as crew Peter left quite a few of the class in his wake.

Last weekend saw the first of the experimental Sunday trophy races. Unfortunately the fleet wasn’t

huge. Winds were good but quite fluky at times. We welcome young Shari back again this year in her

Sabre. Unbeknown to Shari mentor Jack was watching intently from a distance. Three trailer sailors were

amongst the fleet and of course UOME with her big blue and yellow spinnaker led the way. Thankyou to

the Coastguard boys for their assistance with buoy laying and rescue duty.
