Plano residents wishing tolearn tips on how to live greencan take advantage of freetraining classes offered by thecity of Plano.

Live Green in Plano volun-teer training sessions are heldthree times a year and involvesix two-hour classes. Topicscover everything from waterand energy conservation to thecomposing and planting of na-tive plants, said Live Green in

Plano Volunteer Coordinator Charlotte DeMolay.“This is a specialized volunteer training program that we offer,”

DeMolay said. “A lot of our classes are taught by our volunteers. With topics such as composting, we will have our resident expertcome in and teach attendees how to make it, use it and the sciencebehind it. We try and gear all our classes toward changes peoplecan make in our everyday life.”

Part of the focus of the training classes centers on the advan-tages of organic gardening, something John Reas said he knewnothing about prior to attending the training. Since taking theclass, Reas said he has gone from having no gardens to having oneorganic garden at his house and two more plots at the Plano Com-munity Gardens on Plano Parkway.

However, Reas said the program is about more than learninghow to grow organic fruits and vegetables.

“I learned so much that it is amazing,” he said. “I learned aboutwater conservation and have since hooked up rain barrels at myhouse. I didn’t realize you can get a second recycling bin for free[from the city], and since I have done that I have recycled morethan I ever have before. My household waste has really droppedtremendously.”

The classes also focus on the importance of having energy-effi-cient homes, encouraging energy audits to ensure windows anddoors are sealed as tight as possible.

Even those residents who know about living green are encour-aged to attend the classes, with organizers saying all attendees arelikely to learn something new.

“Plano has always been pretty good on sustainability,” saidLarry Howe. “My wife is quite the advocate for recycling, so weknew about some of those programs. We were not as familiar withsome of the things the city was doing, such as composting and or-ganic recycling. The former volunteer coordinator of the training,Deb Bliss, said ‘you may think you are a pretty green person insome respects, but there are others who will be stronger advocatesthan you are.’“

In exchange for the free classes, participants are asked to spend24 hours volunteering with one of the city’s sustainability and en-vironmental programs. Howe has spent much of his volunteer timeteaching others about the benefits of solar energy.

Volunteers also help out at the Plano Community Garden, a 50-bed garden located near the intersection of Plano Parkway andCoit Road. The fruits and vegetables grown at the garden are 100percent organic and are donated once a week to food banks in thecity.
