Discover New South Wales wines

The wine list at Parliament House is rich in history and full of hidden surprises. The carefully

selected wines, paired with local delicacies, reflect the incredible wine regions from across New

South Wales. These include the warm regions of the Hunter Valley and the cool climate areas of

Mudgee, Orange and the Southern Highlands.

In February 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip planted the first grapevines in Australia at Sydney Cove

with cuttings obtained from South Africa and Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately, these cuttings did

not survive. After several attempts to establish a winery in the new colony, it was finally

aspiring wine maker John Macarthur who succeeded to create the first commercial winery at

Camden Park in 1797.

In March 1822, pioneer wine maker Gregory Blaxland introduced Australian wine to the rest of

the world when he presented a bottle of red to the London Wine Society. He was awarded a

silver medal, which prompted the NSW Government to commission James Busby to source

sample vine cuttings from Europe and plant them across Australia. James studied viticulture in

France and taught vineyard cultivation at his winery in the Hunter Valley. He wrote several

books including Planting and Cultivating Vineyards and Making Wine in New South Wales,

published 1831. This subsequently gained him the title, ‘father of the Australian wine industry’.

Many of Australia’s oldest vines can trace their origins back to James Busby’s original collection.
