make-A-Wish foundation®The make-A-Wish Foundation®

is a charitable non-profit organization whose purpose is to grant wishes to children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18, who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. Our vision is that through outreach and education, every medically eligible child has the opportunity for a quality wish experience. We believe in the “power of a wish.” It is our purpose to provide these special children and their families with an experience that is dramatically different from hospitals and treatments. A wish offers welcome respite - a time of normalcy and just plain fun, a time of joy and laughter that will give them “magical memories”for years to come.

In 1980, a group of policeman in Phoenix, Arizona fulfilled the wish of seven-year old Chris Greicius. Suffering from leukemia, Chris’s one ambition in life was to be a policeman. Sworn in as an honorary patrolman, the Arizona Department of Public Safety equipped him with a uniform, helmet, badge and even gave him a helicopter ride.

Hospitalized two days after his inaguration, Chris requested that his uniform and helmet be hung where he could see them. He died three days later and was buried in his uniform and given a police funeral with full honors. From that beginning, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® spread throughout the country and abroad to become the largest wish granting organization in the world.

first Step --- Wish referralThe Make-A-Wish Foundation® accepts with referrals from one of several potential referral sources:1. The child2. The child’s parent(s) or legal guardian(s)3. A medical professional treating the child, such a doctor, nurse, social worker, or child-life specialistIf the initial call comes from someone other than those listed above, we always ask that the family be notified to call directly on their own behalf.

Second Step --- determining EligibilityChildren between the ages 2 1/2 and 18 with a life-

threatening medical condition are potentially eligible for a wish. After a child is referred to the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, the Foundation will contact the child’s treating physician to determine if the child is medically eligible for a wish, based on the medical criteria established by the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America. In addition, a child cannot have received a wish from another wish-granting organization.

Third Step --- Identifying the WishAfter the doctor confirms that the child is medically

eligible, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® assigns a volunteer wish team to coordinate the wish-granting process. When a wish team first visits with a child, the volunteers begin by asking a simple question: “If you could have one wish, what would it be?”

Most wishes fall into one of four categories: “I want to go to...,” “I want to be...,” “I want to meet...,” or “I want to have...”

Once a chapter approves the child’s wish, the wish team sets out to make it come true.

fourth Step --- Granting the WishAfter talking with the child, the Make-A-Wish

Foundation® wish granters set out to create a magical wish experience for the child that will last a lifetime. Every effort is made to include the immediate family in the child’s wish. The wish experience often touches dozens, and sometimes hundreds of people who either help coordinate or are directly involved in the wish.

The wish experiences created by the Make-A-Wish Foundation® are made possible only through the support of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers around the world. A wish opens a world of possibilities for the children. They can dream the unimaginable and we can too, something to be excited about, something to help you forget you are sick.

Children Are Our Future

Cop’s 4 Kids & Communities, is committed to transforming the lives of disadvantaged youth who exhibit maladaptive behaviors such as truancy, violence, gang membership, physical and verbal violence and at risk sexual activity.

Our programs have been very effective at reducing juvenile crime and altering the social outcomes for youth, including:

Decreased involvement in gangs and teen sexual activity.

Developement of goal-directed behavior.Increased GPA and school attendance.Increased self-worth and self-esteem.Increased sense of family, peer and

community support.A shift in attitude and behavior, from being

a victim to taking responsible actions. These days, it’s hard not to see the grave

needs going unmet throughout our city. From increasing juvenile crime, drug addiction, homelessness and unemployment to decreasing governmental programs and

support, there are signs everywhere of the precariousness of our situation. At the same time, however, Cops 4 Kids & Communities, which was founded upon the compassionate drive to recognize and address “at risk” youth, has been fighting not only to reduce juvenile crime, but also to identify the root causes and provide programs that are proven to change young lives.

Sincerely,

Jeff Penn Executive Director Cops 4 Kids & Communities Tax ID#26-4232599

Hemet/ San Jacinto - 6Building a Better Place to Live

Habitat for Humanity

The overwhelming need for housing has provided us with a unique opporutnity to change lives in our neighborhoods. In our market, Habitat for Humanity is one of the few - if not the only - affordable homeownership program that serves families earning less than 50% of the median family income. Cost burden and overcrowding are the most serious problems experienced by very low income area residents. Working with volunteers, families, corporations, congregations, and donors we are able to tackle this important housing issue throughout the high desert area. We are dedicated to making homeownership possible for low-income, working families.

We offer a hand up, no a hand out. We do not give away our houses. We require our Habitat homeowners to invest 500 hours of “sweat equity”

to help build their home and they must each qualify for a 0% interest mortagage.

Shelter is a basic human need, and Habitat strives to achieve its goal of eliminating poverty housing and making decent, affordable homes a reality for all families.

We build and renovate homes in partnership with God and people everywhere with a goal of eliminating substandard housing by making decent, affordable housing a matter of conscience and action in our communities.

Our chapter of Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.

We are unique volunteer experience for people of all ages, races, religions and abilities. The tangible results of a day on the construction site, or the emotional involvement in a family’s growth are things that make the Habitat experience more fulfilling than you can ever imagine. We give vounteers and opportunity to not only make a difference with a days work, but also make a connection with a family moving towards stability, entitlement, and homeownership.

There are volunteer opportunities in every aspect of High desert Habitat for Humanity. From construction labor to committee work, fundraising to family relations, there are always places for you to get involved. For more information on how you can help, please contact us.
