once known as a streetcar suburb in the early 1900’s, englewood now thrives as an art and retail district and is literally a city within a city. located within the city limits of inde-pendence, englewood has made a name for itself as a district that has come to life.

recently recognized as an arts district by the city council of inde-pendence, those whose passion lies within englewood, are eager for the rest of the county to take notice.

“We invite everyone to tour engle-wood and see how alive it is with 12 art galleries, 30 local artists and retail stores,” russ lawrence, owner of changing Seasons and russ law-rence Gallery in englewood said, “not only during the art walk when there

are thousands of people here, but every day as well.”

The art Walk from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on the third Friday of each month pro-vides the opportunity for art enthusi-asts — from collectors to novice — to enjoy a variety of art, from modern to folk, oils to acrylics, jewelry and sculp-tures as well as enjoy music from local musicians.

“Those of us participating in the englewood arts district understand all values of art,” he said. “With pieces ranging from $20,000 to $20 and prints beginning at $5. The great thing about englewood is our art walks continue year round, no matter the weather or season.”

The Winner road Gallery, owned by Sherri Haupert is one of the many galleries, which are open for local artists to display their works.

“Winner road Gallery promotes more of a traditional theme,” she said. “all of the galleries in engle-wood offer a multitude of styles which makes it very interesting and unique.”

Workshops are held at many of the galleries for the public to have a hands-on experience with the artists themselves.

“We invite the public to visit www.winnerroadgallery.com to learn more about the workshops which are held at our gallery on Saturdays,” Haupert said.

along with receiving the art dis-trict designation, englewood will also enjoy a facelift in the months to come with Marc funds designated for streetscape improvements such as widening of sidewalks, relocation of parking and improvement of transit bus stops and bicycle facilities as well as corridor beautification.

one of the mainstays of engle-wood, having been located on Win-ner road for nearly a decade, brings

art to the public in the form of pup-petry with a museum and workshops for children to build their own.

Several restaurants in englewood provide the opportunity to experi-ence a variety of food including the
