    Before you start

Look through the idea, front to back. The ideas in red are just ideas. Students should add to these. There is an outline page for Discovery.

There are graphic organizer pages for the Discussion and Debate sections.

The reason for the worksheets, at the end of the book, is to help you worksystematically through the material. Worksheets are helpers and can be a distractionfrom the rhythm and sequence in your teaching. By putting them at the end they

become support pages versus places to stop, giving a smoother presentation.

DiscoveryIn the beginning of each story you will have a few questions to discover what you

know, or think you know about a story. The Title of the article/ story will be givenand you will be asked to discover the story by asking good questions.

In the second part ofdiscovery you will be asked to find words which you do notknow. Some of these may be highlighted already in bold. Definitions will follow tohelp you discover what the writer is talking about.

Discovery will help youform a plan for the discussion and debate.

DiscussionDiscussion is not a debate, though it can quickly become one if there are strongopposing ideas in the group.

Discussion can be a part of the discovery before you read the story. It may also comeafter to discuss the ideas of the story. Sometimes a persons views may change afterreading the article, which is a good way to start a discussion.

Discussion is interaction without a lot of structure. Be careful not to confusediscussion with argument.Debate is about argument. Discussion is about sharingyour views and interacting with others who want to expand or give a differing

viewpoint.DebateDebate is a structured idea. It means that only one person speaks in turn, and with aspecific point to address. It also has a time limit, so the speaker must be precise intheir argument. In a debate the key is to listen and be prepared to oppose the otherteams ideas. It takes research, a lot of work, and patience.

In the following story we want to begin with discovery ideas. What can you knowfrom a title, if you dont know about the topic?

In discovery you will form ideas to create basics ideas for an outline. In discussionyou will ask questions to help you build an outline for your viewpoint. In debate youwill separate the outline into two sections, for and against. At each stage you will beable to use what you have learned before, to expand on your ideas and understand

    both sides of the issue.

    Among the Darkly Hip

    Dont get a flashlight

    Dave BarryMiamiNational Herald Tribune

I recently spent several weeks on a book tour, flying around the country with a

suitcase full of increasingly alarming underwear. Im pleased to report that airport

security remains highly effective, especially as regards the terrorist threat posed by

87-year-old women with the mobility of oak trees. Because these women need extra

time to reach their seats, they areas instructed by the preboarding announcement

first in line to board the plane, and they almost always get picked forrandom

screening by the security personnel., who need to reach theirquota so they can get

    back to standing around.

We frequent fliers have figured this system out and lag behind the elderly

women, who dodder forward cluelessly, cannon fodder in the War on Terror. They

are pulled aside and stand, bewildered, as security personnel wand them, and root

through their denture adhesive while we able-bodied males stroll onto the plane.

Granted this system is insane, but we must not let sanitystand in the way of airport

    security.

Speaking of insane: One of my stops on the book tour was New York City,

where the publisher put me at an extremely hiphotel. Its so hip that there is no sign

outside saying, HOTEL. I walked right past it the first time. Evidently if youre hip,you just know theres a hotel there.

The lobby was full ofhip people on stark modernistic furniture, talking into

cell phones. They were all 25 years old, and they all wore black. I suspect their

underwear is black. I myself was wearing khaki pants. I felt like a pig farmer in town

    for the manure-spreader show.

The worst part was that I couldnt see. At some point in recent years, light

must have become unhip, because this was the darkest hotel Ive ever stayed in. The

lobby wasnt so bad --- it was merely gloomy --- but the elevator was so dimly lit

that I had to put on my reading glasses, squat, and put my face right next to the

buttons to find the one for my floor. Im sure this amused the hip lobby people.

(Look! A pig farmer squatting in the elevator!)

My floor was actually scary. Have you ever been in one of those Halloween

fun houses, where its pitch blackand people leap out of the darkness to frighten

you? The hotel hallway was like that. It was so dark that I honestly could not see my

feet. I initially thought the walls were painted black, although I was later informed

that they were very dark purple, a hip color. Sometimes I would encounter other

guests in the hallway, but of course I could not see them, because they were wearing

black. I knew they were there only because I could hear their cell phones ringing.

My room had stark modernistic furniture and several modernistic low-wattage

lamps, which, when I turned them all on, provided about the same illumination as a

radio dial. The only way to read was to turn the TV on and tune it to a program with

bright colors, such as Baywatch. My room was strewn with hip items, many of

them for sale, including a hotel T-shirt (black), various herbal substances and an

Intimacy Kit for $12. If they really want to make money, they should sell 100-watt

light bulbs; I would have paid $20 for one. They sell a candle, labeled TRAVELCANDLE, for $15; I considered buying it and using it in the elevator, to find the

    Lobby button.

My situation improved in California, where I stayed at aswankBeverly Hills

hotel that had lights. It also had a swankbarjammed to the walls with fortyish

movie executives who all wore (There must have been a memo) black pants, black

shirts and black leather jackets. They were talking about film projects with young,

gifted blondes wearing attire that conveyedthe message:Take a look at these gifts!

Everybody was drinking --- really --- watermelon martinis. So I was out of place

(Look! A pig farmer drinking beer!), but at least I could see.

IRRELEVANT FINAL BOOK-TOUR NOTE: You know how, at drugstore

cash registers. There are little displays of breath mints, batteries, etc. to encourage

impulse buy? Well, in Los Angeles, I went into Longs drugstore where the product

on display at the cash register was: a sofa. Really! Suspended ominously right

    behind the cashiers head.

In debate you will have a statement not a question. You have to react to the statementwith facts, not opinions.

Discussions are based a lot on opinions and answer questions. This is where

these two ideas, though similar, are different.

Debate is about facts and statements.

When you make a statement, from a story, you must consider what the coreissue is. If you have made a good outline, you will have this alreadydiscovered.

This story is from health. The core issue could be; social economics hotels

    culture

In todays world the topics could range from; Hospitality Decorating Marketing Travel Economics

These are all good arguments that you would want to research for your argument, orwrite in your essay. Build the argument starting from Why? Once you have

determined the Why? you can find facts to support your idea.

Out of date Hotels need to be shut down.

Hip and hippie are the same cultural idea.

The colour of lights should be limited to primary colors.

Before you start choose one of the above statements to focus on. Choose afor or against position.

Research to find FACTS for your position.

    List the facts.

Write out your argument in a long paragraph format. Include the oppositeposition in your writing.

You need to write out both sides so you can understand theother sides argument.
