Sandy Actors Theatre began in June 1976 as the One Way Theatre in Sandy, Ore-
gon. In March 1979, the group became known as The Sandy Community Players and per-
formed in various locations before finding its home in Heritage Square.
The theater saw many different theatrical perspectives through-
out its history. SCP was known for producing musical productions with
elaborate sets and costumes, and for a time became known for its chil-
dren's theater.
In 1999 a shift began to emerge producing a full season of com-
edy, drama and children's productions. In the summer of 2000, we again
changed our name, to better reflect our commitment to continually raise
the level of our production values.
Today, SAT is known for providing professional productions and for its community
involvement. A vital part of that involvement is reaching out to the community for help in every
phase of every production, as well as the organization’s ongoing operations.
Putting on a play involves a lot more people than just the actors on stage. That's
especially true with community theater, where volunteers are the life blood of every produc-
tion. In turn, community theaters provide opportunities to build valuable skills in a casual set-
ting.
Please visit our website at sandyactorstheatre.org to see how you can get involved.
Be sure to check out the summer Workshop for Youth, Readers Theatre, and the first show of
the fall season, Blithe Spirit, opening September 14. SAT is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization;
all contributions are tax-deductible.

Kate Schmitz House (Sandy Country Florist)
Kate Junker Schmitz came to Sandywith her parents Caspar and Katherine Junkerin 1897 when she was only a year old. Herparents purchased the Sandy Hotel which saton the north side of Pioneer Boulevard andoperated it with style and flair for many years. It burned in 1923, then the land was sold toRon Essen, a pharmacist who constructed afireproof concrete building that quickly be-came a popular drug store and the place toshop for gifts and sundries in Sandy. Essensold the business to pharmacist Ivan Barker in
1933.Later, Barker moved the pharmacy to Proctor Boule-vard and the building was converted to a restaurant.Today, DoubleDragon Chi-nese Restau-rant does busi-ness there.
The Junker’sbuilt their fami-ly home acrossPioneer Boule-vard from their
hotel. That home is now Sandy Country Florist.
The Junkers also built the Junker Building, aconcrete structure, on the south side of PioneerBoulevard. There Kate Schmitz and her husband, who were married in 1920, operated a popular caféin the Junker Building between the Junker residence
and the R.S. Smith Building.
The Junkers and their daughterboth had a significant impact onthe development and businessof early Sandy. Dances were apopular form of socializationand entertainment and the late-night break from the dancingusually resulted in grabbing abite to eat cooked by KateSchmitz.
The Junkers, the Schmitzes, the Essons and the Barkers all left a memorable legacy in Sandy, and the buildings thatsurvive them are a true representation of Sandy: Then & Now.
Watch for the publication of Sandy: Then & Now book and the companionDVD due out in October by the Sandy Historical Society. 11
Alfred Williams came to Sandy in 1906 towork in the logging camps. But his real pas-sion was the practice of medicine. He stud-ied for his state medical license but did notpass the exam. Nevertheless, he was granteda license in 1917 when the shortage of coun-try doctors was acute and most doctors wereserving troops in WWI. In the 1920s, Dr. Wil-liams (whose nickname was Doc Yak after acartoon character of the time) had a loghome and medical office built at 39332 Proc-tor Boulevard (Picture #1). As you can seefrom the first photo, the vertical cedar tree trunks that anchored the buildingassured its strength and longevity over time. Later, the building was home toSt. Paul's Press (Picture #2) , updated and expanded to include offices an
retail space. Most recently, it has un-dergone another renovation bringingit into the 21st Century where it ishome to Cool Printing plus other of-fices (Picture #3).
The structures of the DVD and bookprojects were created by PhilJonsrud and Denny Gray who togeth-
er recorded the history through photographs and the written word. Phil be-gan collecting photos going back to 1973 when he was helping create thefirst Sandy Historical Society publication, Sandy Pioneers, Early Settlers andBarlow Road Days. As local pioneer families shared their pictures, it becameclear that such a project could be done. Eventually, Phil enlisted the help ofhis cousin Denny Gray whose computer skills and photo restoration talentsallowed for a dramatic expansion of the material available for the book andDVD. Phil continued to add captions to the photos for years and the two as-sembled notebooks of their planned book and DVD.
Both Phil Jonsrud and Denny Gray died this spring. The volunteers andboard of directors at the Sandy Historical Museum are completing the twoprojects -- the book and the DVD -- out of respect and appreciation for all thework they put into creating them. The anticipated publication date is October.

The Sandy Historical Society is the repository for much of Sandy-area history including a comprehensive collection of photographs. Sandy:Then & Now is a two-part project that will include a photographic tour ofSandy as it was near the turn of the 20th Century. To the historical panora-ma, newer photos have been added to show buildings and businesses arethey are now.
There are two parts to the project. The first is a DVD that will showSandy buildings and locations -- then and now. It was originally conceivedas a DVD or slide show that could be played in the Sandy Historical Museumto help visitors visualize the growth and progress in the community over thelast 120 years. Ann Marie Amstad, secretary of the historical society board, saw it as a good way for people to quickly understand the nature of the com-munity as it was then and as it is now.
The second part of the project isa Sandy: Then & Now book that will in-clude photographs showing Sandy'shistory through the photos in the col-lection. They can be companion piecesor stand alone.
There are several examples inthis publication such as the buildingthat originally housed the medical office
of "Doc Yak" (Picture #1) which later served as the home to St, Paul's Press(Picture #2) and today is home to Cool Printing (Picture #3) .

Jonsrud & Grey
Phil Jonsrud and Denny Grey left a wonderful leg-
acy that will become a part of the Sandy community her-
itage. Both men died in spring 2012, leaving a gaping
hole in the fabric of the Sandy Historical Society.
In their last two years, the cousins collaborated
on “Sandy: Then & Now,” a DVD and companion book
that shows the buildings of early Sandy with the updat-
ed or replacement buildings of today.

Ecclesiastes 1:4, 9 - King James Version (KJV)4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh … 9 Thething that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that whichshall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
The holy word of God is inspired and true. The above scriptures helps to deflate our egos and
put things in perspective. From God’s point of view, there really isn’t anything new in the natu-
ral human realm. We are the same as our most ancient parents - Adam and Eve. We have the
same needs they had - food, shelter, clothing, communication, survival, etc.
Man builds and rebuilds. Man invents and reinvents. Man improves on what has already been.
It is simply one generation passing away and another generation coming into the place of abil-
ity, power and authority.
But there is an undeniable inward craving for spiritual life and meaning in the heart of man. We
want a relationship with God. When we realize we cannot create God in our image, and fash-
ion Him into what we want Him to be, then we begin to be open to receiving the truth of God’s
Acts 2:38 - King James Version (KJV)38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in thename of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of theHoly Ghost.
There really isn’t anything new...almost!
New spiritual life is waiting for you. Pastor Russell Collier - Rivers of Living Water Church
