19 Grade Schools in “Sandy Area”

In the early days of the Sandy Area, the roads were in very poor condition. Therefore, children had

to walk to school. Many of these schools were started before Sandy High School was organized in

1914. The following is a list of grade schools and dates when they began:

Sandy Ridge 1865; Revenue 1870; Cherryville 1873; Marmot 1878; Kelso (High For-

est) 1879; Boring 1883; Sandy 1886; Bull Run late 1880’s; Dover 1889; Deep Creek

(?); Welches 1880; Cottrell 1890; Firwood 1893; Salmon late 1880’s; Aims 1894;

Sandy Lutheran 1904; Hillcrest 1913; Greenwood 1914; Brightwood 1920. As roads improved and school buses were in use, some smaller schools consolidated with larger

ones. The Oregon Trail School District was organized in 1997.

“Sandy Area” The Oregon Trail (from Illinois and Missouri to Oregon City) brought many emigrants into the Oregon

Territory. In 1845 a Kentuckian, Sam Barlow, was reluctant to take the hazardous rafting trip down

the Columbia River from The Dalles to Portland. He was determined to find an overland route

around the south side of Mt. Hood. In December of 1845, he and his party completed the route and

made it to Oregon City. It is estimated that in its first 25 years, the Barlow Road carried more than

50,000 people over it to Oregon. It contributed more toward the prosperity of the Willamette Valley

and the future of the State of Oregon than any other achievement prior to the building of the railways

in the 1870’s. Francis and Lydia Revenue arrived in 1853 (20 years before there was any sign of the

village of Sandy). First they built their home and soon after they built a trading post across the road.

This resulted in the Oregon Trail running between the two buildings. Later they built the Revenue

Bridge over the Sandy River so wagon trains didn’t have to ford it. They built a school in 1870 for

their nine children. Emigrant children attended this school.

the school. Located on Ten Eyck Rd on the

first level bench of Revenue land - about 1/2

mile South of where the Revenue Bridge

crosses over the Sandy River.
