Hi Stacey,
I wanted to thank you foryour recent link to Dr. RandyPauschs last lecture. That wasvery moving. I have beenthinking about this for a week
and I cant say what my lastexpression would be, but I knowI would want my family around.
I am both a serious andlighthearted man, but it seemsto me there should be somemeaning or message behindevery image I produce. I alsobelieve many photographers/artists say and express more
about themselves when theycreate.
If we knew the time or close tothe day we were going to leavethis world, I am sure our workwould be much more dramaticfor many of us.
Its great food-for-thoughtStacey and I thank you again for
the inspirational link forreecting on this idea.
I shut my eyes in order to see.-- Paul Gaugin
Randy Pauschs last lecture onOprah in 2007 (watch it onYouTube here), inspired in me adesire to know what each of uswould do as a nal creative act.
If we all knew we only had one
more painting/photo/building/song/lm/article left in us, whatwould be the inspiration behindit. What would your piece deresistancebe about?
Like every month, I asked mylovely newsletter subscribersthe themes question(subscribe here if you dontalready) and the answers I
received back were lovely, andthoughtful and expressive ofyour different personalities andquirks. I love hearing your ideasand feedback, so please keepthem coming.
To those of you who replied, thank you for your thoughts, they helped shape the article
on page 54.
I also wanted to share the
inspirational emails on the otherpage with you. Thank you toeverybody who emails in withlovely thoughts about discounderworld, it truly means somuch.
I hope you enjoy this issue asmuch as I enjoyed creating it,Stacey

I have been a bit obsessedwith eyes of late. Im quiteliterally seeing themeverywhere.
I nd that I am constantlyseeking inspiration. Through anincreasing interest inphotography and a vow to carrymy camera with me whereverI go, I have found that its allaround me. My camera has
helped me to notice thingsmore... how the light falls, shadows, buds unfurling on thetrees, tiny mushrooms in themoss on the forest oor.
Julie says she nds the pathfrom inspiration to actualcreative output to be aninteresting and mysterious one,and over the last year has been
making an effort to tune in towhat, why and when thingshave inspired her.
I've noticed lately that I'minspired by things that I cameacross years ago. A collage afriend did with cut-out eyeballsnearly 20 years ago, recentlycame out in felt on a pillow forour bedroom.

Very often objects inspire me.
Stones, a quilt made by mygreat grandma, a piece ofdriftwood, the bark of a treethat looks like an eye. I am abit of an obsessive collectorof such things. They inspire inme a desire to tell a story, toweave words into them, toassign meaning to them, orcoax to the surface themeaning that lurks within.
Along with photography, Juliedabbles in a wide range ofcreative mediums in herspecially built studio, which ismy great love at the moment.

Ultimately all of theinspiration I gathernds its way into ourhome.
But what do we do with all ofthis inspiration that's aroundus? I nd that I use it to makemy home more my own, moreunique. And sometimes I forget, living in the middle of it as I do,that we have created
something unique with thethings we collect and thememories that are strewn aboutour house on shelves, on thewalls, on the oor. So ultimatelyall of the inspiration I gathernds its way into our home andmakes it the home that it is. Idon't always see that exceptthrough the eyes of someonenew who comes to visit
seeing them look arounddelightedly means all theinspiration was, well, indeedinspired.

I have a passion fordeveloping cutting edge

JAYCEN is the type of iconichero that children can hold up

JAYCENs travels andadventures provide a platformfor entertainment andeducation as he moves throughtime, meeting important gures, visiting important places, andexperiencing important events

URAEUS has certainly createdthe basis of an epic adventurewith JAYCEN WISE, and wherethey both go in thefuture, only time will

hen I steppedout of my car,
my bones cracked like driedliquorice. Inside, it smelledlike sweaty faux leather andpeppery trail mix. Outside, itsmelled like things that werenew to me: ten lane freeways, palm trees, chaparral, and aman with ashy hands and ablack wool fedora.
Hey man, he said to me.Thats a nice car.
Thanks.

Thats right.
Where you from man?
Kentucky
Well, if you need anything, letme know Kentucky. My namesSupreme.
Supreme then walked to theelevator, his hand wrappedtightly around a womansleopard skinned waist so thatthe edges of his ngers fellright on the swell of her hips.He called her baby.
The whole next day, I justlaughed to myself about theodd encounter. I have a knackfor these sorts of things.Somehow, after three days ofthe most memorable road tripId ever done, I found itperfectly tting that the rstperson I met when I arrived inCalifornia was a pimp namedSupreme, who lived in my
apartment complex.
So lets backtrack a little, because even though this wasthe beginning of a new chapter,it was also the end of aprevious one.
I moved to Los Angeles in thefall of 2003 to attend school.

We started off smoothly, breezing across the rolling hillsof Indiana, Illinois andMissouri before hitting into theat plains of Kansas. Thingswent normally. We talked anddid our best to pass the time.
We memorized the staterankings for size and populationaccording to a Rand McNallyatlas. Even now, I stillremember that Missouri isranked 17th in populationaccording to the 2000 census. That was all on the rst day.
On the second day, we took offthrough Kansas andColorado. It was a study ofcontrast in terrains. Sprawlinghorizons followed by raggedmountain peaks. The onecommon ingredient was the
size, the vastness of placesthat stretch your eyes. I hadntseen anything like it. Theeastern seaboard isnt like that. Its scrunchy and surrounded byhills that dont add anything tothe view except blocking it.
We coasted through Denverduring early evening, and theninto the Rockies. A storm rolledin, and we rocketed throughthe interstate passes, crackingup peaks and diving into valleys.I felt like I was driving a roller
coaster, or riding along theback of a dragon.
We passed through theEisenhower tunnel. When wecame out the other side, theradio crackled nervously. Therewas a sizzle, and then thewhole sky turned white. For asecond, I couldnt see a thing.
From my house in Kentucky, itwas over 2,500 miles (4,000km) across nine states to thewest coast. Thats three soliddays of driving. I packed mylittle Dodge Stealth full ofsuitcases and televisions and
Harry Potter books crammedup underneath the seats. Inside, there wasnt much room for meand my travelling buddy.

Inspiration: where doyou get yours from?
Dude, my friend said. Wasthat lightning?
Yeah, I said. I think we wereinside a cloud.
And then we got stuck in a tinytown called Eagle, Colorado. There was a mudslide up aheadand no way the road could becleared until morning.
Okay, we said. It was good aplace to stop as any. Therewere plenty of hotels around.
Except there were no rooms.
Thats because the tiny townof Eagle, Colorado, usually justa tiny town in the mountains, happened to be the same tinytown where Kobe Bryantallegedly raped a girl earlier thatsummer. And so, it happens tobe the same tiny town where amedia swarm had descended tocover the ongoing trial.
Hence, no rooms.

It left me inspired. So inspired, that about two years later, Istarted working on a book thatdraws directly from those threedays. The vastness of thecountryside, the openness ofthe road, and the weirdness of
the people you meet on it.
Its not every day you meet apimp.
Especially on your rstday in California.
It was six hours before we gotinto Pasadena and metSupreme.
I was tired and fatigued fromdriving for nearly 16 hours, yetmy friend and I decided to walk
around town. We were amazedby the sight of palm trees.Neither one of us had ever seenthe tall kind that pocket LosAngeles. They looked likesomething out of a Dr. Seussbook. They couldnt be real.
It couldnt be real
Did I really meet a pimp?
Did I really travel thousands ofmiles across the country?
There was something strange, yet familiar, about the wholething. California was completelydifferent than Kentucky, yet
connected in a way I couldntquite place. Even thougheverything looked completelyalien, there was somethingintimate about stepping into mycar at home and then steppingout of the same car so manymiles away.
We slept in the car, and startedout in the morning. We stoppedby the Hoover Dam and LasVegas. We rolled into CaesarsPalace through the backentrance, back where the oldladies with fat rolls over their
elbows stare vacantly at slotmachines and hope for theirlucky 7s. I dropped a quarter, lost a game, and then got backon the road.

Now Corinne is working as partof a design agency inNottingham, which creates
greetings cards for the NorthAmerican market. This isn'treally art for me, but its a hellof an illustration job.
Corinne believes that art isan expression of the artist andtheir life experiences, whichmakes the subject so excitingand diverse.
In regards to her artwork, shesays everything is how itshould be and nothing iscoincidence, and her personalwork is driven by a love foranimals and the unseen worldaround us.
I am a spiritualist medium,(which means she believes thata persons spirit survivesphysical death and cancommunicate with certaingifted people, called mediums)which dominates my life andlters through to my work. Itry not to make it too obviousthough, because I would hate tooffend or alienate people whodont carry the same beliefs.
Everything is how itshould be andnothing iscoincidence.
Happy the cloud. She goesabout her business in a mostcheery manner. She has noheady career aspirations orhankering to know what thelatest fashion is: Happy is justglad to be, which is most lovely. Also she is a very loyal friendand likes to drink tea made in apot.

The everyday objects she usesin her work also represent herfascination with the idea of
transition, but in a differentway.
I love to use old or antiquepaper and material as it has itsown personality. The idea thatinanimate objects have had alife before I met them, and aretherefore never really mine, fascinates me.
I couldn't use new paper for along while because it just didn'twork with what I was doing.About the same time I sawOliver Jeffers work and ittotally reinforced my love forutilising old paper.

Things would be relegatedto necessary, optional and acomplete waste of time. I canalmost bet that most of thenecessary things would revolvearound family and friends, the
optional would include thingslike work, eating and cleaning (Imean, well, you are going to dietomorrow!) and the completewaste of time would revolvearound material things like Ialways wanted to buy aMercedes or an i-phone. Toolate now buddy.

Here are some of the answers:
Ive been thinking about it, andI think my last lecture would beabout passion. I know that nogreat designer ever came outof a semi-interested person, sothatd be my last lecture. Butthen I started thinking whatwould be my last lecture tomy seven year old son and thisis just way too big...

It would probably be a gamethat somehow joined up all mycontradictory aspects - my loveof nature with explosions, fabulous locations and beautifulpeople juxtaposed with mydesire to reveal thehypocrisies of the rich and thesuffering of ordinary people. Itwould have stunts andhelicopters and a massive chasescene. Music would be by theEmerald City. Something largerthan the project itself wouldhappen. I'd like to makesomething that was excitingand wonderful to encounter.(Joe Citizen, lmmaker)
Most peoples last actionswould revolve around family andfriends, food and fun, and I wascurious to nd out what theirlast creative act would be. Thedaddy of all work you have everdone. If you are a painter andyou had one last work to leave

So if I was toassemble together one last setof words, I guess they would beabout the importance oflearning and challenges. Whatlength they arrangedthemselves into would dependon how much I could bebothered writing, but theskeleton would be somethingbased around sharing theknowledge I have learnt in mytime regarding the importanceof these two things.

Nathaniel Flick is aprofessional bassplayer, devoted husband andloving father, who neverstruggles for inspiration.
He draws it from numeroussources, predominantly musicand spirituality. He comparesmusic to a conversationbetween two old friends, wherewords and thoughts ow easilyand effortlessly.
Nathaniel grew up in the BayArea in the 1970s with a jazz-fanatic mother whose friendswere all musicians. They had
jam sessions at his house, andwhen they tired, the turntablerang out with their favouritemusic. Funk and soul envelopedhis early and teenage years.Home Sweet Home is a bandwhose music he held on to,whose percolating busy bassunderneath the drums and hornsection got deep into my soul.
Some of us disagree with ourparents choice of music, especially if they were to playan album, or even a song, onrepeat all day long, but inNathaniels case, his motherplaying Kind of Blue by MilesDavis on repeat is what stillinspires him today, as well asalbums by John Coltrane. They taught me how to becalm even during sweet musicalmoments, as well as how to letloose and not be afraid to hit aclunker note or two on the wayto those effortless musicalmoments.
He dreams of waves of sound
owing and cascading aroundme, an electric symphony ofsorts. He nds inspiration andchallenge in his dreams, asalthough he dreams of perfectsymphonies, he nds it takesquite some effort to writemusic that's complete, whilenot being too busy at the sametime. Its a delicate balance.

Spirituality also helps simplifythis busy world for him. Life is
