Happy Mother’s Day May 11, 2014 Keep an eye out for just a few of our wonderful moms in this issue of our church newsletter! As we focus on the future of our congregation it is important to reflect on the resources that we have been blessed with to do the work of the church in this place and time. We are fortunate to have volunteers, generous givers and financial resources, people with compassionate hearts, and a building. As people of faith we are called to be stewards of all that we possess. We are not called to abuse, not called to hold too tightly, not called to idolize, but to be stewards of that which God provides. I am reminded of this as I read this weeks update from Week of Compassion. Blessings, Pastor Adam Rescue and relief efforts continue across the Midwest and South in the aftermath of several days of severe weather that has left a wake of death, damage and destruction. At least 29 people have been killed. Hundreds of homes and businesses have been destroyed and entire communities devastated. Week of Compassion is contacting local pastors and regional offices to learn the full extent of the impact on our congregations but is already responding to three congregations that have been impacted. The sanctuary and fellowship hall of First Christian Church, Tupelo, Mississippi has been destroyed. First Christian Church, Baxter Springs, Kansas had several families with damage. First Christian Church, Washington, North Carolina not only had families affected by tornadoes but lost its historic sanctuary to fire. Your prayers and your gifts to WoC are already undergirding these congregations and will certainly be needed as we continue to respond to these and to other congregations and communities that have been impacted. Designated gifts can be made to WoC and should be earmarked for "Response Fund" or "U.S. Storms." We will also post information soon about relief supplies, volunteer efforts and other short and long-term recovery needs. Week of Compassion is grateful for the partnership and support of Disciples across North America that enables us Disciples to put our compassion in action. Thank you. Keep an eye out for just a few of our wonderful moms in this

issue of our church newsletter!

Week of Compassion is contacting local pastors and regional offices to learn the full extent of the impact on our congregations but is already

responding to three congregations that have been impacted. The sanctuary and fellowship hall of First Christian Church, Tupelo, Mississippi has been destroyed. First Christian Church, Baxter Springs, Kansas had several families with damage. First Christian Church, Washington, North Carolina not

The redoing of the Education Wing Hallway is now complete. Over the past year many workers were involved in the process. A big thank you to all of them. We have painted, fixed tile, replaced mopboard, put on new radiator covers, reworked a bathroom, and now because of a great effort by Cynthia Livingston the doors are painted. Please walk through the hallway and visit a Sunday School class. You'll see young and some not as young learning about God in a pleasing atmosphere thanks to your generous giving. Come give us a look! The Property Committee We really can’t thank you enough to the people who came out and supported the Silent Auction. These fund give us the opportunity to reach out to people in need. This Mother’s Day we would like to say thank you to all the Moms in our congregation with a special treat! Look for a fun surprise May 11th! Membership

Our Keep Funding the Churches donation schedule is coming up May 4th. We would like to say a big thank you to Alli Schnelle for the Easter Moment for Missions at Palm Sunday 10:30 service. Just a reminder, our next trip to Micah is in June, so please bring donations for this mission work. It is very much needed and appreciated. The donation jar for Hope Haven Cleaning Kits is out on the table in the back of the sanctuary each Sunday. Please help with any contribution you can. A little goes a long way. Also, Bright Futures is collecting Hygiene items, such as: shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Thank you everyone for all that you

do!

Summer months are a time to enjoy the

warmth, take vacations, and spend time

with family. It preparation for busy sched-

ules we have decided to change our

Sunday service time for the months of

June, July & August to one service at

9:15 am. The time might be different but

the communion with God will be the

same.

There are some exciting changes also

happening with Sunday School classes.

We will be announcing more information

soon!

The Shepherds Staff Food Panty would like to

share 12 answers they received from a survey

they had taken: “What does the Food Pantry

mean to me and my family”? The responses

were enlightening to say the least. 167 of the

comments were very heartfelt, thanking the

Pantry and the people working it.

1. It’s very helpful. My family appreciates it so

much! It has made a big difference in our

health.

2. It means we don’t run out of food by the

middle of the week. I know just about eve-

ryone that helps out here. They are some

great people.

3. It means a lot because we can’t afford food

very often. It helps us eat and feed our chil-

dren.

4. With my only income source from Social

Security and the least amount possible, I

am also sending my son to college 4 days

a week. Gas is taking all my extra money,

besides bills and medications. No extra for

food. This is a blessing.

5. Extra food for my Mother and I. My Mother

has not had work for 4 months and this

means a lot to us. I am “9 yrs old”. Thank

you so much for your help! Signed

XOXOXO

This wouldn’t be possible without our

church family and the man who coordinates

it. Thank you to you all and Lyle Krohn.

Christian Education is seeking four to six volunteers to serve as Sunday School teachers to work on a rotation schedule either one Sunday per month or one month at a time (similar to deacon/serving schedules). Sunday school lessons will be provided. If interested, please contact Alli Schnelle at [email protected] or

Behind the Scenes Blessings

It’s almost summer, which means it’s almost church camp time! FCC has a long-standing tradition of

paying half of church camp fees for any young person who attends our church and wishes to go to church

camp. This tradition isn’t about financial assistance; the purpose is for the church family to join in

supporting the young person in attending camp. Our church currently has second and third generations

of families attending church camp. Church camp changes lives! Your generous gifts to our church’s

general operating fund help change lives through our commitment to support youth who attend camp.

Thanks to additional gifts from friends and family of Jarrett Hawley Jr., additional funds are available for

those who need additional assistance with the camp fees. Sign up now for best fee discounts. Contact

the church office for more information.

Thank you from OGMP

The following is excerpts from a thank-you letter received from Todd Adams, Associate General

Minister and Vice President of the Christian Church in the United States and Canada.

“Thank you for your support of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the US and Canada through

the Disciples Mission Fund, the four special day offerings, and the two special mission funds. I recently

came across a question posed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., ‘What have you done for someone else

today?’ The challenge, of course, is to live each day trying to meet the goal of doing something for

someone else

Your congregation’s gifts to DMF allow you to live knowing that you are doing something for someone

else every day. When a neighboring congregation receives support from the regional minister during

times of transition, you have helped to serve your neighbor. When a person is ordained into Christian

ministry, your congregation has assisted with their education. When a missionary in Laos feeds a hungry

child, you have done something for someone else. When AIDS/HIV medicine is distributed in South

Africa, you have served your sibling in Christ.

Your gifts to DMF touch and transform lives on 6 continents, 21 college and university campuses and in

32 regions around the US and Canada. For your support, we are grateful. It is a blessing to serve on

your behalf, being one of the many ways through which you are doing for others and living God’s love

out loud!”
