Who is DISARM?



DISARM: a H2020 thematic network

• Thematic networks = compiling knowledge ready for practice

• collecting existing scientific knowledge and best practices which are close to being put into practice, but not yet sufficiently ready for farmers and foresters to implement;

• translating this knowledge into easily understandable end-user material such as short, informative recommendations and solutions (“practice abstracts”), leaflets, guidelines and audio-visual material (photos, video clips, etc.)

• Strong link between level of use and antibiotic resistance;

• As little as possible, as much as necessary;• Reduce, replace, rethink;• From disseminating solutions to disseminating methods to identify the solutions for a specific context;

• From external motivation towards internal motivation;• From focus on farmers to focus on the entire complex of actors and factors.

• EC calls for more prudent use, a usage that causes less antibiotic resistance

• Evidence says• Strong link between level of use and antibiotic resistance

more prudent often means a reduction• Level of usage is often more habit rather than clear

deliberation based on health status and risk focus on people’s behaviour and motivation

• Production, health and welfare can be maintained with much less antibiotics better management, biosecurity, good husbandry practice

• Zero use is not the final aim• Reducing actual usage to as little as possible, as much as necessary

• Reducing the need forantibiotics

• Farm-specific improvement• Level of usage but also quality of usage



• Reduce: motivation, knowledge awareness to as little as possible, as much as necessary

• Replace: vaccines, probiotics, prebiotics, bacteriophages and organic acids

• Rethink: biosecurity, husbandry practices, production systems

• Thematic network = learning network• People show more positive learning outcomes whenthey start feeling more and more internally motivated

• A learning network should create circumstances thatsupport internal motivation

• Pilot supporting mechanisms for advisory and transfer of technology

• Stress additional benefits such as welfare and economicperformance

• Without necessarily giving up external motivators

We believe:• Sustainable livestock farming ≠ using antibiotics as cover-up

for suboptimal managementBut

• Reducing the need for AB is more than just cutting its use!It requires:

• A knowledge-intensive process • Rethinking farm specific management practices and farm

organization• Break routines and change behavior• Change perceptions and presumptions

consultations• Shared ownership, motivation and accountability from

Conclusion: Improving biosecurity and vaccination strategies with assistance of a coach can lower ABU without harming farm economic performance




Herd specific actions for lower AMU can be profitable and economic performance was more sensitive to change in ADG and FCR than direct costs of interventions

What type of farms do we vaccinate?

1. Farms with bad technical results

2. Farms with clinical problems of coccidiosis:E. acervulina / E. maxima / E. tenella

Effects of cox vaccination:

– Improved gut integrity

– Reduced usage of antibiotics for enterical problems=> 30,43% less antibiotics (of which 24,45% β-lactam)

‒ No difference in AB usage for other indications(e.g. locomotory)



Risk factor analysis for poor health, welfare and performance inpoultry.

- 7 EU member states

- 358 conventional broiler farms

- 77%: only activity = broiler production

- 78,5%: Part of a quality assurance scheme

- 51,8%: Part of an integrated system



CONCLUSIONS META-ANALYSIS

Clear risk factors were found:

Housing: floor quality; ventilation; type of light at loading and intensity of light

Infectious: E.coli; coccidiosis and dysbacteriosis

Management: level of professionalism; feed withdrawal time and light adaptations

Adaptations of management, housing and health programs are beneficial



Overall conclusions

Data-collection is of high importance for a poultry vet andfarmer:

To identify potential factors to improve poultry health To adapt veterinary protocols and prevent disease To help the poultry industry in decreasing AB usage

The interpretation of the collected data is crucial and thepoultry vet plays a key role!
