Seed Funding• First major university wide initiative for Institute

• Encourage engagement from researchers doing fantastic work and who may not have

engaged before

• Eligibility has been kept broad

• Based on individual merit of the proposal

Eligibility • Implementation of a co-production model (i.e. individuals with lived experience of

disability to be included as experts throughout the research, mentoring and knowledge

exchange process)

• Engagement of local or global decision makers in government, industry, services and

community

• Potential of further funding from external resources

Timeline • Applications open: 20 June 2018

The National Disability Insurance Scheme• Largest reform in a generation

• Provides greater choice and control to people with disability

• Represents a four-fold increase in disability funding

• Approximately 450,000 Australians will have access to the scheme.….this is only 1/4 of Australians who identify as having a disability

There’s more to disability policy than the NDIS• At full scheme the NDIS will have 450-500,000 participants

2 million Australians identify as having a disability

• The National Disability Strategy

– Build inclusive and accessible communities

– Protect the rights of people with disability

– Improve the economic security of people with disability

– Reduce stigma

– And improve health

How can research help?• How can we make sure the other 1/4 of Australians don’t get left behind?

• Within the NDIS itself

– How do we make sure the scheme is built on an understanding of the lived experience of disability?

– How does it align with mainstream systems like health and education at the local to national level? How

does it interact with specialist systems like domestic violence and child welfare?

– How will it impact remote communities and indigenous people?

– How can it leverage off of other innovations, from technology to the labour market?

– How to we create effective regulatory frameworks to safeguard NDIS participants?

What is the Community Reference Panel?

A group of people with a range of experiences relevant to the research including: • People with experience of injecting drug use • People living with hepatitis C • Sex workers • People who have experienced time in prison • People with disability • Aboriginal people with any of the above background or experience

Community Reference Panel

The Community Reference Panel provides specific guidance and feedback on various aspects of research projects. This feedback, from community members, is essential to ensure that the research is grounded in, and respectful of, the experiences and concerns of those affected by research.

All consultations are done over the phone. For each consultation the panel members receive $40 for the contribution.

Responsibilities of the Community Reference Panel: • Provide feedback on questions that researchers ask • Keep information about the research confidential • Advise of change of contact details

What’s involved in the Community Reference Panel?

Approach people in the community who might be

interested in the panel

Introduction and explain the purpose of the panel

Explain what we want the person to do as a

member of the panel

We ask about their experience so that we

can match members with projects that are relevant

At this point, the person decides whether or not they want to continue.

Being a part of the panel is completely voluntary

For each research project members will be

contacted 2 or 3 times. This may be on the phone

or by email.

You will be sent information about the

project before we contact you.

All of the discussions will be confidential – your

name will not be linked to any information.

We will pay you $40 per discussion, including the

introduction session. Researchers are provided

with a written feedback

Things to consider moving forward

• Adapt methods of consultation to target audiences • Potential for face to face interaction with members • Provide members with an opportunity to provide feedback on how the

panel is run and future direction. • Managing expectations of the members • Providing adequate support needs to members

• Adjusting project timeframes to accommodate needs of members • Content and information of projects may be viewed by carers/support

workers of members with disability.
